Cuz he crazy? All i know is that throughout the story they give hints about how her 'most closest family' could be the one who wish for her death. And maybe not. That's why it's still interesting. But if I'm not wrong, someone said the voice of that mysterious man at the 'nest' that was talking in the dark sounded really like Caleb's. Anyway, he's suspicious nontheless so...

Technically you don't have to. If you don't care about story progresson, Chapter 9 is unlocked after finishing Chap 1-8.
