Exactly the same. I thought, despise all what I read on the net, that Ascension was the best choice, that he finally could be completely free. And this prick was so unbearable after that, even clicking on him to open a chest was a pain in the ass, I just wanted to cut his head, drown him, whatever just to not see his face anymore. And I spent a whole day wondering "do I assume my awful choice and go til the end with this ungrateful little brat, or do I reload ?". I reloaded the very next evening. And by all gods, this was the best decision ever. The relief watching him finally cry after two centuries of suffering, the pride watching him guide "his people" like some Ann Rice's Moses with Cazador's staff... A very powerful scene.

WOW, Astarion’s face at 07:30 is easily the most punchable I think I’ve ever seen him! Needed the reminder of how unbearable ascended Astarion is because I was just debating on ascending him in my current playthrough for the power boost (well, that’s why I tell myself at least, but if I’m honest it’s probably more for the newly fixed ascended kisses and the scene where he turns you hehe 😜 Yes, I’m already in therapy lol) Thanks for spending the time to make this vid. Wow I never saw any of those lines anywhere! They are so good! I love some of those terrible dynamics. Ascended Astarion, god amongst mortals, and Gale God of Arrogance would make for an awful toxic partnership. Also a corrupt Grand Duke Wyll working in the shadows with his old friend the Vampire Ascended would make for some scary mayhem in Baldur's Gate.

Gale and Astarion are probably the most alike of all of the companions (though Gale does a good job of hiding his darker side) so it does kind of make sense, he's the only one who has a comparible journey to the ascend/not ascend decision.

@@yuttasparrow0private Oh, absolutely. If anything, he’s more insecure as AA. As a spawn, his insecurity was tied to Cazador. Astarion was in very real danger and desperate to escape a fate he knew to be worse than death. Add in 200 years of trauma and yeah, none of his early game behavior is at all surprising. But because the source of that insecurity could be eliminated, he could also be freed from it. He could be free, period. It's pretty straightforward and simple. Not easy, of course, but simple. AA, on the other hand, just goes from being a slave to Cazador to being a slave to his “power”. Ascension may be true vampirism with ‘perks’ but it doesn't eliminate the downside of the vampire curse. So he's still destined to become the same "scheming, paranoid, power-hungry beast" he expressed such disdain for. And because a good chunk of that power is based on perception, he needs others to recognize it. That's why he can't/won't shut up about how powerful he is. So now he's also somewhat beholden to the opinions of others, people he probably thinks of as beneath him even as he so desperately wants them to be impressed. Which would be pretty miserable all on its own but that’s just the psychological part. He’s also back to being in physical danger because the sort of ‘power’ he wants won’t be given freely. And though he talks like he can rule the world, in reality there are any number of wizards, quasi-gods, demi-gods, etc. etc. that are still far, far more powerful than he is. I mean, Elminster could probably fell him between bites of cheese. So, his arrogance is likely to get him killed at some point. And to top it all off, he made a deal with a devil for this. An *arch*devil. The whole process required an infernal contract, one he didn’t even read. If you think that’s not going to come back to bite him, you weren't paying attention during the House of Hope. His best hope is that he isn't dragged to the hells where the 7000 souls he sold to Mephistopheles are likely going to want a word. It’s why I find his diverging paths so fascinating and--potentially--so sad. The others all seem to have multiple moments where they can rethink their decision and change course. They make their beds quite willingly. He doesn’t really have that. From a writing perspective, I love it. It's complex and nuanced and just...chef's kiss. But from an empathy perspective, it's damned unfair lol. Also, sorry for the essay. Writing and psychology are two of my nerd triggers 😅

@@yuttasparrow0private As a vampire spawn, he never lost his feelings because spawn retain their mental faculties. The biggest drawbacks to being a spawn--aside from the usual sun sensitivity, not being able to enter homes, etc.--is the hunger and being under the control of their master. But if a spawn's master dies, their free will returns and even the hunger is impacted to a degree, since that is part of the control. Becoming a true vampire is what destroys the rest of their 'humanity' for lack of a better word. I don't really know why that is but it's part of the curse. For sure a spawn is still in danger but it's Faerun, everyone is kind of in danger lol. But there's less danger as a spawn because no one has it out for him specifically. There's no real reason for anyone new he meets to even know he is a vampire spawn, technically. But as a new vampire lord, ascended or otherwise, he's going to have insta-enemies. Lots of them. He has no spawn to help protect him and if he sets about making a spawn army, that'll just draw even more unwanted attention. Within the rules and such of the universe, there's really no way he lives long enough for his power to grow to a point where he can maybe challenge the likes of Elminster--who has a 13 century headstart on power--or the many, many other powerful monster hunters, wizards, etc. that occupy the realm. As for the ascension itself, you're half right. The ritual/rite isn't the contract. As Raphael explains, the contract is the agreement between Mephistopheles as the contractor and Cazador (or Astarion) as the contractee to exchange souls for power. The archdevil is the source of the power. The Black Mass is what's required to obtain it. It's pretty much a sales contract, with ascension as the product and souls as the payment. Completing the rite is, effectively, signing the contract, at which point Mephistopheles grants the power. So by completing the ritual, Astarion has made a deal, one he didn't even negotiate, with the second most powerful archdevil in the hells. Since Raphael only explained the gist of the contract, Astarion doesn't even know what the full contract entails. And speaking of Raphael, if he's killed in the ascension timeline, I'd imagine things would be even worse for Astarion since Raphael is Mephistopheles' son. Like, you killed his kid either after he gave you power or before you came begging for it? On a scale from 1-10 my friend, you're f*cked. Now, this part is just speculation, but I think spawn Astarion has fairly decent chance at a good hereafter since he's more or less a chosen of Jergal by the end of the game. That's the only god who's ever actually helped him out, so he may even have a bit of faith to fall back on. I mean, it's hard not to be at least a little fond of ol' Bone Man.

Not gonna lie, I did kinda feel like giving up on hope a bit knowing that the traffic keep decreasing day by day 🥲, but I'm still determined on making more BG3 videos at least until the end of the year, or even beyond that, I know a lot of popular games is worth to cover, but I'm determined to only post RPG-related games in this channel in the long run beyond BG3 so my channel didn't lost its identity 😃 I originally wanted to cover the new Dragon Age, but it breaks my heart knowing the game gets a lot of hate and the dialogue choices gets dumbed down a lot, so I'm not that interested to play the game currently, maybe I'll give it a try one day, as for the planned next game after BG3, I always been a big fan of The Witcher, so the next Witcher game is guaranteed to be shown here (if I'm still around by then ofc 😅) and I love Kingdom Come Deliverance so much, so I will try to cover some KCD2 videos when they released it in february.
