“I never understood how, during the Civil War, we could ever fight brother against brother,” says singer-songwriter Lance Cowan. “But over the past decade, I’ve come to see how that is, in fact, very possible.”
Cowan’s new single, “Love Anyway,” from his forthcoming album, Against The Grain, addresses the political and cultural divisions so prevalent around the world today. (The single is available on January 24. Against The Grain is set for worldwide digital release & physical release in North America & Europe on March 21 on his own Lantzapalooza Muzik label (distributed in North America by CPI/The Orchard and in Europe by At The Helm/Proper).
“It’s so disheartening,” he says. “I have friends and family that I can no longer talk to. Politics have taken center stage to every conversation and it’s an us-against-them mentality. I’m as guilty as anyone, but to survive, we have got to re-focus on our values. All that matters is love.”
Against The Grain features a stellar cast of musicians - guitarist Pat Flynn (New Grass Revival), pedal steel legend Dan Dugmore (Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor), drummer and percussionist Vinny Santoro (The Cicadas, The Highwaymen, Rodney Crowell), bassist Jay Turner (Demola Adepoju, King Sunny Ade, Joanna Cotten), pianist / keyboardist Todd Smith (Days of the New) and celebrated vocal team Chip and Billy Davis (Alabama, Dolly Parton). Against The Grain was produced by Jason Stelluto and Scott Paschall.
On “Love Anyway,” Smith creates a beautiful piano intro before Cowan and Flynn added a quiet guitarbacked lyric. The Davis brothers add subtle harmony lines.
