As a Christian man who struggles with same-sex reactions, this is refreshing. I love the biblical truth that came out of this interview because I know that it is something that God sent me to listen to so that I can learn and understand more about God's view and plan on sexuality. P.S.: Becket, for whatever reason, your personal testimony is amongst the only ones that actually resonated with me in my quest to get free from this shameful struggle. After reading your book, I was amazed. Thank you for attending that church service where you got saved.

What finally broke my porn habit for good was the realization that I was being entertained by and deriving pleasure from watching people sin against God, and sending themselves to hell. Maybe I am stating the obvious with that, but it was just an extra layer of my own depravity that I became aware of and so horrified by.
@nickewing7542 жыл бұрын
I’ve never thought about it like this! Thank you for the extra insight. 👍 I’m always aware of how watching porn will affect my wife. We made a deal that if I were to relapse, I’d tell her immediately. I’ve seen how that betrayal affects her emotionally and psychologically so deeply, that it makes me realize how awful it is, and how much more awful it must be to God. I will pray for you and your walk with God, wherever you may be in your life. May the Lord bless you and keep you always.

To Dr. McDowell - when I became a Christian as a teen, I read everything your father, Josh McDowell, wrote. I was so honored to meet him at a Biola chapel in the early 90's. I also met my husband at Biola, and we were both committed to following the ethics of Jesus. While dating and after we married (at Calvary Chapel on campus), God opened up doors to speak on healthy relationships in public schools both in Southern CA and Chicagoland. Thank you for bringing the message of God's good gift of sexuality to a new generation! I plan to get your book for my teens! Becket: you are a LIGHT

This video deserves so much more views!!! The church needs to address this in the best way as possible. Parents and church need to be side to side to talk to young folks about this. The "don't have sex before marriage" shouldn't be the only thing to say to a teenager. Teenagers are reckless people. I honored my parents and feared God when my mom said that to me but it won't work for everybody. We need to do better in talking about it.

I have watched a documentary on pornography, and they said an enormous degree of porn stars were molested when they were kids, especially women. A lady was interviewed who ran a nonprofit to help people get out of prostitution, and or breaking away from working in the porn industry. She too said in both of these professions, an enormous percentage of these people were molested as children, and they were broken hearted people. Also, it has been pointed out, when people watch porn or go with a prostitute, you are playing a role in reinforcing and inflicting destructive wounds of molestation over and over again. So, when people think viewing porn isn't a big deal and its harmless, that is deceptive thinking and a lie becuase you are inflicting harm on others who deserve a healthy life to be loved and live a life full of love. Most importantly live and thrive in a life surrendering to the lord God who went on the cross that a life with such darkness would be nothing but intense light and warmth!
@lorebeth5 ай бұрын
This not only applies to women in the porn industry but many - I would even go so far as to say most - girls who are promiscuous have been abused sexually or emotionally damaged and are subconsciously trying to get back what was stolen, or fix what was broken, but the continual meaningless sexual acts only add to the devastation.

As a former Catholic... on procreation...a woman's body can only conceive a few days a month. But intimacy, sex, doesn't just happen a few days a month. Married sex isn't just for procreation.

@kateguilfoyle51552 жыл бұрын
The Catholic faith does not say that sex is only for procreation. The Church simply states a scientific fact - that procreation is the main objective purpose of the sexual act - thereby making the sexual act “ordered” where it may/would lead to conception and “disordered” when the act itself bars conception (oral sex/homosexual sex etc). That is simply a distinguishing term - and, while it might be said that one act or other is a sin, the term itself does not convey judgement (despite the claims of gay activists) because the Catholic faith recognises that nearly everybody sins and that the few who remain pure and free from sin are saints - that is why they are special. The Catholic Church herself encourages the sexual act as an act that is important in relationships on a number of levels, and not only procreation- not the least of which is the giving of each to the other. This is discussed in the video and attributed to the Catholic theology of the body. The Catholic faith is nuanced and complex - it is not something that is capable of reduction into sound bites. The main, unchanging fact of the Catholic view of the sexual act is that it is a marital act - within marriage and, in short hand, that it be capable of conception. It doesn’t need to result in conception, that is, the couple can be post-menopausal, infertile etc, but the act itself must be the marital act in order to be “ordered.” There are nuances but this is not the place to discuss! The confessional is the place where a Catholic would talk this out to a priest.
@HumanDignity102 жыл бұрын
Yes, and the Catholic Church teaches that Natural Family Planning (NFP) is an acceptable way to space out children. When all of the other churches caved on artificial contraception, the CC stayed true to its teaching, knowing that trying for to separate sex from its procreative purpose would lead to more sexual immorality, and would be bad for women , and the CC has been shown to be correct. Women are now expected to want sex and be available for sex all of the time. Plus, artificial contraception has a lot of negative side affects for women. Natural Family Planning respects a woman’s body and encourages sexual responsibility and morality by calling for chastity during the few days of the month of ovulation if couples would like to avoid procreating. It’s good sexual integrity.

It is indeed ironic that we simultaneously treat sex as supreme (to the point of idolatry) and yet something casual. You can’t have it both ways! As Christians, we must recognize sex is sacred and Divinely designed exclusively for marriage, but also recognize that it is not the ultimate good, either. Christian marriage is intended to paint a portrait of the Gospel to the world and the bonding and intimacy sex produces when used according to God’s design is part of this. But Jesus tells us that one day sex and marriage will pass away. One day, Christ will have is Bride and there will be no marriage but THE marriage. Celibacy prophetically portrays the supremacy of that ultimate marriage of Christ and the Church.

When Dr. McDowell and Becket discuss the definition of love they articulate where we are in aquandry in this this culture. One of the effects, I think, of Modernity is that 'right now' is ultimate. The word 'modern' means 'this moment'. The issue might be that we've gotten rid of the concept of eternity. Rarely, even in churches, do people think of themselves as eternal beings. As permanent beings. The wellbeing of the 'other' is to be placed in a different context if you're thinking hundred, thousands, even millions of years rather than say, 80. A young person, caught in ssa is going to feel immediate pain when told they may not act on their feelings. That this is ultimately good for them makes no sense to a modern sensibility if it means sacrificing now. It hurts to give up the idea of ever satisfying sexual desire without a compelling alternative/reason or understanding of reality. I don't know how you could get this in the post-modern west without having an experience of Jesus.

I hate the “love is love” slogan. What does that even mean? I certainly don’t love my wife, my child, my best friend, and my favorite food in the same way! And if we are referring to sexual/erotic love, surely we don’t genuinely believe all sexual expression is equally valid.
@annchovey20892 жыл бұрын
It’s a dumb slogan. Are they trying to justify adults erotic love towards children? Should we justify love between human and animal? I’m sure my dog loves me. I think the disconnect is their definition of love.
@RobertKellyIII2 жыл бұрын
@@annchovey2089 Usually as soon as you mention a counter-example, they specify adult and consensual. But that means that they, too, have a standard of appropriate and inappropriate sexual expression. We say that children cannot consent to sex, but why is that? We recognize there is something different about sex that makes it inappropriate even in cases where other forms of affection are wholesome. Now, I want to be very careful here because inappropriate comparisons between same-sex attraction and pedophilia and child molestation have been used in ways that are very hurtful to LGBT people, including chaste same-sex attracted Christians. Same-sex attraction is not the same as pedophilia and someone is not more likely to molest children because they are attracted to the same-sex. Still, I think the rejection of pedophilia highlights a fundamental inconsistency that refutes the “love is love” slogan. Even if it is affectionate and well-intentioned, there are cases where sexual expression is clearly inappropriate.

Sometimes our culture gets it right and sometimes we get it wrong. I think it is just as important to recognize it when our culture gets it right. It can be tempting to become contrarian and condemn the good with the bad. But consider how Paul seeks to find a positive point of connection in his sermon on Mars hill.

Please pray for our South African schools. Up until now our country and schools (just like America) was built upon Christian values and principals. But in the last few months there has been a lot of pressure to change our sex Ed (including gender types etc) in schools from young grades as well as a lot of noise about the gay movement. Yesterday I also saw an article to change the religious bill to not allow Christian (or religious) schools to live out or teach what the Bible says (mostly because of not supporting gay lifestyle). Where on earth will we be able to send our kids?! if not even a school you hope aligns with your values, now looks like any other school. Why not focus on parents parenting well, why not focus on fathers that's missing (or who do not know how to be a father) in the household, why not focus on affirming a boy's identity and a girl's identity so that they don't need to wonder about their gender. why not focus on getting porn and sex films/ads out of our media so that sex is not the biggest issue in your life. We need God, not sex or any other non sense thing we try to think up to make up our identity.

Hello Mr. Cook. Huge fan of your show, and I always learn so much watching. My question concerns the comment at the beginning of the discussion about if everyone in a relationship lived by the biblical rules of monogamy, thereby eliminating STD's, promiscuity, adultery, etc...I don't necessarily believe that's true because by nature we are sinners and essentially want to have our desires met that are in opposition of God. The reason for Christ is that we were unable to follow God's law of obedience so if most of us chose to live by Christ's standards of marriage, we as sinners would still sin. Thank you again for your show.

The Alanis Morissette song is a perfect example! How this act outside of marriage, completely had her in firstly obsession of the guy, and the angst of emotional torture in remembrance of how “ they were” and how she hopes he is in the same mindset about her!! The song is truly a picture of the consequences that our loving Father wants us to avoid, and protect us from! I have to say she was and is quite the storyteller in her lyrics! Love you, Becket!

Love pertains to how things are said as well as what is said ('speaking the truth in love').

Wise words!... As allways, thanks you! Love and sex are powerfull things, and young kids not allways understands it. Our pop culture doesn't help too. As I was listening I remember a movie with Michael Fassbender, called " Shame", because in it his sex addiction was a simpton of something very bad that traumatised him. Beneath that addiction was a seak for help, for love that he never accomplish. His road to perdition, in the end will teach him he was wrong, but at what cost...

The definition is Ephesians is 'as Christ loved the church - laying down his life'. This is way more than protect and provide.

This is a rich and engrossing discussion that resonates with everyone. Great points, well made, thank you both. We need to respect the hardwiring of our brains for pleasure responses and not do anything to ruin that, or desensitize us. P*rn*graphy, apart from many other evils, desensitises us. I've never been able to have a relationship with any man who watches porn. It never gets off the ground because he's getting his needs met elsewhere. He doesn't respect me from the outset either, and expects sex. Furthermore, I can't and won't compete with those surgically enhanced women on the screen. Great points about cohabiting before marriage. The seeds of mistrust being sown.... Trust and emotional safety (as a package required for a woman to feel pleasure) are highly underrated. Not feeling used by the other person is also highly underrated, but essential for a healthy relationship. A Christian woman wants a man, a husband, to be her Sexy Protector.

Your comment about not realising that you had so many emotional scars is so relevant to all of us who are post sexual revolution. in my youth I thought my hurts were my particular failures. My daughters generation sees young girls (under age) having sex before they are emotionally ready and coping with hurt and rejection by young boys who are not emotionally mature enough to handle a complex act - the giving of one’s body to another. That act requires circumstances of trust and respect - a trust and respect that is for life. That is, marriage. BTW your Dad is the best! Nailing the windows shut!
