Have loved Karen's voice for over 50 years! I also really love Richard's voice in this recording. And got a bit of a glimpse of Bob Messenger who was a wonderfully talented and humble person! Thank you very much for this video. I've watched it several times already.

Was Bob Messenger one of the back-up musicians? A member of the "Wrecking Crew"? The guitar player certainly looks like Tommy Tedesco.

As an outside viewer, not knowing the inner workings of the Carpenter family, it always seems to me Karen is at her utmost joy when she is playing the drums and singing. By looking at the skins on the drums they have been well played so it is no gimmick. Be interesting to learn from Richard how often she played and practiced the drums and if she played along to some of the more rocked up songs of the day. i.e. from John Bonham or Carl Palmer!!!! That would be so cool to know that she did that!!!!

This was originally a Christian song by Ralph Carmichael, I believe....they changed some of the lyrics ...."you must surrender to His will..." and changed it to...."You must surrender if you care..."

At 17, Karen was offered a recording contract by Joe Osborne. At 19, the Carpenters were offered a contract by Herb Alpert because of Karen's voice. For all intents and purposes, Karen's voice is the reason there is even a Carpenters sound

True, Karen's voice was and is the greatest female voice of all time in my opinion. However, to be fair, Richard's arranging and ability to find songs perfect to showcase Karen's voice cannot be underestimated. True, because Karen was tied to Richard for almost all her career (bar her solo album), I don't think she got the chance to fully explore where her beautiful voice could have taken her - singing in higher register and exploring other styles like songs from musicals etc. In essence, while she had 'The Voice', she also needed the right songs and arrangements to sing and Richard played a huge part in her success in this regard, for which he does not receive the credit he deserves.

@@criostoirnott3733 I dnt think anyone can argue tht RC was not only a good arranger, he was also a good producer and an innovator. And if I were RC, I probably wld have also focus on making sure Karen's voice was amplified to the max in all their records especially since I know tht doing so meant I cld buy more expensive cars. Since Karen's passing, I think, and I can be very wrong, RC had an only 1 Top 20 hit despite collaborating with top notch singers like Dionne Warwick, Dusty Springfield, Petula Clark and others

Nope. Richard's songwriting and producing genius were important, too!
