"We've Only Just Begun" was originally a short 1970 commercial for Crocker Bank. It was written by Paul Williams.

I love that at this Time this gentleman Is recolecting the treasured memories from The very same creator of CARPENTERS. Before to be late. He Is lucid, smart and still with a great capacity remembering and a great composer of all times too. Thanks for sharing.

I swear on my parents. I have ALWAYS said, for YEARS. what Richard said at 2:37. that the Music Arranger, is the unsung hero in the music business. hearing Richard say that. you could have knocked me over with a feather... they should get as much credit for a massive HIT. in R&B, Pop, Country Music and Jazz. as the music producer does, and royalties. but they DON'T.

When I'm not quite feeling it, whatever "it" may be, I go to the Carpenters Gold album which I put on repeat and I say to myself, "It's going to be a Carpenters Day," and somehow, after a few hours, things start to feel okay again. And I listen to that album over and over again all day long.
I loved all of the songs you and Karen made. When i hear them to this day it takes me back to a wonderful time in my life. The purity in her voice was unreal. I wish she could have been saved and i believe she would still be singing today. What a loss of a beautiful life and gift to music.

Chris is a TRUE historian. Check out his Q&A on "A Kind of Hush." Terrificness!!! That being said, at the beginning of this clip, you are set up to hear new details. Not much here that even the average fan doesn't already know. So lots of taking and fill for most of us. Regarding the Forsythe show: To say it more plainly. Karen--who was in NO condition to fly across the country, then across the pond at the time--was hoodwinked into the promotion of the 1974-1978 singles LP. Then, additionally, was urged to lie-if sheepishly-about Richard's absence. This was very unfair to her as she was not a good liar. There is much irony in how she ends 'Please Mr. Postman' with "STOP!" I'm pretty sure by that point in their duo career this was precisely how she felt. She looked exhausted and emaciated. The makeup person, who doused her in nearly clown doll-level makeup, should have been fired on the spot. In their defense, no amount of makeup or clothing choice would have masked the seriousness of her condition by this point. There were also moments you can't tell if she was about to lose her balance from dizziness/exhaustion or if it was her intentional stage performance style. STILL, her "live" vocals on Forsythe's show sound pretty damn near the recordings. Especially 'White Christmas.' The entire closing segment was perfection, except for when Bruce joins her. It WAS his show after all. My LONG STANDING opinion has been this: Following the Christmas special in 1978, they both should have taken a 2-3 year break and get some perspective--not to mention returned health. While she did live on for almost 5 years after the albums's release, it was a constant downslide because she/they did not STOP. There is even a recorded quote of her flippantly saying "You can't stop. The only way you can stop...is if you die."

Is soft rock not part of RR hall of fame consideration? Serious question. Because, why in the F isn’t the greatest, best selling soft rock band of all time in there????!!

Quality is everything. The Carpenters’ music is high quality. Some people may dislike their music, but they can’t deny it’s great quality music.

Karen was a great drummer but she didn't play on their records. Herb Alpert had the iconic session drummer Hal Blaine play on their big hits.

Hal played excellent for John Denver as well--which no doubt you already know. I just thought I'd add to the accolades!

@Tears77529 you're correct. He was John Denver's drummer for around a decade. I'm a fan of The Wrecking Crew and many other session musician players which you could call unofficial groups.

"Viewed as radioactively square".........yeah, by a bunch of morally bankrupt music executives that wanted to sell tits and ass. Unfortunately that mindset won out, which is why society is poisoned by what the industry still calls music today. Anyone willing to show some skin (and shill for the Democratic party) is offered a deal, hence why "music' today is so comically bad. They aren't looking for talent, they're looking for controlled assets. Karen Carpenter had more talent than all of these losers combined.

They were normal while their peers went off the deep end on acid, rebellion, unbridled sexuality etc. That's why they were considered 'square' in comparison. They were just conservatives ie conserving traditional values while everyone else was tearing everything in reach down.

Let me guess. Because of side 2's length, cassettes had to fill out side 1 with a short edit. Couldn't Richard just put in an unreleased cut?

There's a point during the interview where you can see Richard trying to keep himself from getting choked up. Her death still haunts him to this day and unfortunately he lives with the regret he should have done things differently to save her life such as staging a family intervention. There's no denying Richard's gifts as an arranger, but Karen was the heart and soul of the Carpenters

The Wizard of Oz was a flop when it came out. None of the studio execs wanted A Charlie Brown Christmas to air until somebody fought for it. And now, where are those Carpenter critics? This goes to show you that great art can face adversity from all sides. Stick to your guns, do what you enjoy. And hopefully, it breaks through.
