To another girl. I'm now a year into HRT and thinking of meeting some women to date, but not sure where to start. All I know is to throw all the het-oriented advice I was given out the window. We women relate differently to women than we do to men, and men to men differently than to women. This holds true even when people don't know they're actually women or men. Different courtship rituals, different perceptions, different dynamics, different communication styles. Things get more complex for nonbinary people, some of whom can best describe their dating style as queer. It's not that they don't care about you, it's just that you are a much smaller market. The vast majority of viewers are interested in heterosexual romantic storylines. Many don't relate as well to queer romantic storylines. These shows aim for an audience made up of the lowest common denominator of the biggest markets.
@lolaf1er2 жыл бұрын
So anyways straight hets don't care about queer people, because if they did they'd know we are just as valuable a market to tap into because even many straight people are interested in queer storylines and when affluent white gays have disposable income they often don't have children they are inclined to spend it on. Markets research have proven that the queer community is not an insubstantial enough market you should be able to afford to ignore us, it's why queer baiting exists.

This reminds me of a while ago in Australia when a season of The Bachelorette with a bisexual Bachelorette was announced. Later in the day my (bisexual) sister told me that she heard some radio hosts debating whether they'd want to date someone who had been in a same-sex relationship previously. The whole conversation fell into a lot of biphobic arguments and I can imagine it upset a lot of bisexuals just trying to live their lives that day. Yes, maybe media attention like this is an essential part of the process of becoming more accepted by general society, but that day still made me less comfortable about being open about my bisexuality 🤔 Anyway, the bisexual Bachelorette is happening whether I like it or not. I hope it can do something good for us.

They could do coupling through texting. Contestants could pick their #1 #2 #3 choice and text that to the producers, then they get texted back to announce the results. In the simplest possible terms: Some executive at ITV sat down and worked out/guessed that more homophobes would switch off if they put queer people on the show than the number of additional viewers who would be gained from doing so, so those executives came up with some bullshit to justify not doing the thing that would result in less viewers and this is the decision and context within which 'the queers' have some legitimately frustration.

A while back I was listening to a morning radio show and the topic of bisexuality came up. One of the hosts said that if his girlfriend came out as bisexual, he would be upset and break up with her because he wouldn't want to share her with a woman and she needs to be free to fulfill her needs. He didn't say this in a hateful way, and the other hosts did correct him, but I was still taken aback upon hearing it. Yet I couldn't really feel angry at him or blame him for thinking that because he seemed to genuinely not know and that's just how bisexuals are often portrayed in media. It wasn't even the first time I heard someone say something like that. While I have not watched Love Island, I do know that romance reality shows generally thrive on their guests behaving in scandalous and outrageous ways, and an all bi season or series would most likely just spread and reinforce that sort of thinking.

I really appreciate you putting your opinions out there on this-it’s something that needs to be acknowledged. I agree, honestly. Sometimes the straights think that inclusion is forcing straight culture on queer people (or forcing us INTO a straight culture format, rather) and I’m not saying that’s what this is but…it’s kind of similar. I don’t want my square peg ass shoved in a round hole. I want producers to thoughtfully craft something that they think queer people will enjoy and that celebrates queerness. I find it sad that whenever queer representation is brought up, we kind of feel the need to scrutinize it to make sure it's not going to make us 'look bad' because we simply don't have enough representation going around that we can afford it. Like in a way i want the cheesy romance tv shows as much as i want the serious stuff that makes you reflect and all, but we have a hard time getting anything at all so we end up with not much media to choose from. And obviously queer people often don't agree on what is or isn't 'good' representation to begin with simply because our experiences, although similar in certain meaningful ways, vary a whole lot just like with any other group of individuals, so we have people who are tired of the melodramatic coming out stories and others who don't want comedies that tone down the hardships they've experienced as a queer person... and since influent tv and movie producers will often abandon something unsuccessful on the basis of it being gay and so will avoid anything gay in the future, anything new is make or break. It's like we're stuck at an impasse. anyway
