She fought on for 3 or 4 more years, loss the use of her right arm to cancer but kept singing on stage and TV. She sang and did an interview on the Merv Griffen show 4 days before she was bed ridden and 3 weeks before she died. She wasn't able to walk on her own at that point and had to be helped on to the stage to sing two song for Merv. 31...WAY too young. F-cancer...

I am SO glad y'all picked this song - I've been begging for it for months! Her daughter is actress/comedian Maya Rudolph. At the end of this song, she repeats "Maya" as a love note to her daughter. The song perfectly highlights her coloratura soprano range. - which is unlike any I've heard. She wrote the lyrics & music (the music was based on a tune she would hum to Maya). She tragically died of breast cancer in 1979 at 31. President Jimmy Carter presented her with the American Cancer Society's Courage Award in 1978. You should also listen to her songs "Les Fleurs', "Expecting", "Reasons" & "Seeing You This Way".

I hope you'll react to Les Fleur by Minnie Ripperton. It features her voice in a more powerful manner, and will definitely give you goosebumps. Fun fact: This 1975 song was composed by Minnie and her husband Richard Rudolph as a lullaby to their daughter, Maya Rudolph (of Saturday Night Live fame). Minnie's husband, Richard, is playing acoustic guitar in the background of this video. 🌞

She was amazing and had such a sweet voice. I tear up whenever I hear it. And it was EVERYWHERE you went back then. On radio, in the mall, in the grocery store, at your friends house. You just heard this song everywhere. That is her Husband Richard Rudolph in the video. They both wrote this song and many other songs together. She passed away at the too young age of 31 years old, and was said that she died in her husband's arms. He said they were so in love until her death, and that he still felt many years later like a part of him was missing.

Minnie is one of the great, but nearly forgotten singers that were spectacular in their own right. She began her career as a member of The Gems ( There was also a new York group of the same name) who were a Chicago girl group in the 1960s. The group became the primary backup vocal group for Chess Records. The group included Minnie who also recorded under the name Andrea Davis, who would go on to a career with the Chicago pscych-rock group Rotary Connection before embarking on a solo career highlighted by her hit song "Lovin' You." As a member of The Gems she provided the background vocals for one of the greatest R&B hits of the 60's, 'Rescue Me' sung by the equally forgotten but incredibly spectacular artist Fontella Bass. The musicians on that recording included Maurice White and Louis Satterfield later of Earth, Wind and Fire and Leonard Caston of MoTown. Minnie was one of the very 1st celebrities who went public with her breast cancer diagnosis. She passed at 31 in 1979.

Minnie Riperton was a special soul known for her "high whistle register" which few sopranos can accomplish. Truly, it is a regret of mine that I never got to see her in a live performance. Towards the end of Lovin' You, which was cut off too early here, she lovingly mentions her daughter Maya, Maya... Actually, Minnie was singing to her 2-year-old daughter in the studio when it was recorded in 1974. That Maya is actually singer, comedian, writer, producer, Maya Rudolph best known as a cast member of Saturday Night Live. Unfortunately, Minnie died of breast cancer in 1979. She is so missed.

It's not higher then Mariah's. Mariah's vocal range is bigger then Minnie's, low notes to high notes. Mariah was in the Guinness world record for the hitting the highest note ever by a singer in 1991

As beautiful as this one is, her live performance in 1975, I think it is.....hits the whistle notes...unreal.

Yay, finally! Now you know why many of us wanted you to see what we meant by Mariah and Ariana not being the pioneers of whistle register singers. Minnie and also Deniece Williams were way ahead of the game. Did Jordan use the word "screech" to describe Minnie's voice? Yikes! There will be coal in his Christmas stocking tomorrow morning. Amber, Minnie was known to wear baby's breath (which I love) in her hair regularly. If not that, she'd often have some sort of decorative item in her hair. The part where she says "my, my, my..."; in the longer version she clearly says "Maya, Maya, Maya.....", who is her daughter, actress Maya Rudolph. Maya was a baby at the time and she would sing to her and added her name to the song. :) Check out her song "Memory Lane" (sometimes titled "Back Down Memory Lane".)

Most of Minnie's Catalogue is sorrowfully overlooked and underrated, but she has some amazing gems that you two most definitely should listen to. Here is a short list of amazing songs by her: "Memory Band" (when she was a part of the group Rotary Connection). "Les Fleurs: "Reasons" "Take A Little Trip" "Every Time He Comes Around" "Baby, This Love I Have" "Simple Things" "Can You Feel What I'm Saying?" "Memory Lane" "Here We Go" "You Take My Breath Away"

At the very end of the song she sings 'Maya, Maya, Maya Maya...' - she was singing to her toddler daughter who was at the recording studio at the time - Maya Rudolph, who would go on to be a cast member of SNL and a fantastic comedian in tons of TV shows and movies. I named my daughter Maya after hearing that in her song.

The song was written & given to her by great Stevie Wonder. She seemed like an amazingly sweet & fun person. Makes sense Maya Rudolph is so funny, & quiet as is kept, can really sing also. But i once saw Minnie in a show, I think hosted by Sammy Davis Jr., kind of in the style of Tonight Show, where hosts sit at a desk. She had already performed & then Sammy announced Richard Pryor. When he came over & sat down in his seat, Minnie, who had been this sweet person, suddenly attacked Richard like he was her man, she was like fake kissin him up & all over him. Richard played along with his brilliant physical comedy, flailing his arms, & acting clueless. 😂 It was frickin hilarious! Can’t recall nothin after that but I was dyin! Of course it was heartbreaking when she passed. I think her last album was called Memory Lane, & there was a video of her singing it as a guest on a show, & In retrospect, she seemed to be referring to what was to come. Other Minnie songs: Perfect Love Inside My Love She also sang background on a Stevie Wonder song from his album, Fulfillingness’ First Finale called, Creepin. When you listen closely, you can hear her sounding so sensuous. R&B singer Shanice, also covered Loving You, & was a beautiful tribute as well. Minnie had a five octave range. Others that sing that high besides Shanice, obviously Mariah, & Chante Moore, El DeBarge, Phoebe Snow & Jessica Cleaves (EW&F keep Your Head to the Sky). 🧡🎶
