Love it or Hate it, The Thai Water Festival is HUGE

It's The Thai Water Festival, celebrated in mid-April to mark both the Thai New Year as well as the end of the dry season. Known locally as Songkran, it is celebrated almost universally in Thailand, but I believe this small quiet town is the epicenter as it turns from quiet to crazy in the blink of an eye.

I was in the middle of that as well. Thought I was the only farang. Totally unprepared, knew nothing. Relax on the beach all day eating sea food and then all major roads close down around me and big name band start playing. Thousands of people everywhere, never seen anything even close to this .had to walk back to my hotel because no taxi can get through. Saw big police chase on the way home, don't know what happened. AMAZING THAILAND.

I never understood how Bang Saen remains so quiet during the entire rest of the year. It's closer to Bangkok then Pattaya, and in my opinion the beach and promenade is also nicer then Pattaya. But for some reason hardly any farang about.
