Because when I saw this going into COMPLETELY unaware (context: I had got some devastating news like 15 minutes prior and decided to see a movie instead getting dangerous)..... and this movie so thoroughly got me outta my head, I thought of you and was like, "The Jedi must cover this, my ears will need those takes so my brain can keep going." As a person in a wheelchair, I just have to say that I appreciate these in depth spoiler breakdowns. I'm in a small town, so it's hard for me to get to the movies, and the way Amanda explains the movie and gives her analysis really makes the movie come to life. So, as a person who loves the movies, but can't get to them very often, I really appreciate the work that Amanda does. Thanks, Amanda

I know it's not the same as a cinema but learning how to watch movies online, and therefore at home, was a game changer for me. I'm disabled and while I am an ambulatory wheelchair user, I don't go to the movies very often because it's so loud and Sensory and there are no subtitles and I can't pause to pee and my neck usually hurts in the seats. Cinemas were just not designed for me really. However even though I do watch the movies at home, I really appreciate in depth breakdowns because it helps with my autism struggle with watching new things if I know what's going to happen! And apart from horror movies, I always really enjoy Amanda's recommendations. Anyway, I'm sorry you are barred from access to the cinema, that's awful!

I get the instinct to feel sorry for Daisy but the thing is- imagine Daisy was a guy. "Duke", a desperate man tweeked out on drugs, manipulates a woman he knows doesn't want to have sex with him into doing it or he'll expose her & her girlfriend for killing her sister's abusive husband who recently put her in the hospital. "Duke" would be considered a nasty duel antagonist and we'd be cheering for his murder in any other movie. Daisy seems sweet and the actress does a great job making her feel like a poor little meow meow but changing the character's gender doesn't actually make her behavior any less reprehensible than the hypothetical "Duke's" actions.

@@AmandaTheJedi Sorry, I should have mentioned- my comment was jumping off your line in the video about how Daisy doesn't deserve to die for what she did, because I'm 100% sure at least some people who don't feel Daisy deserved to die (not saying specifically you of course) and maybe even some who think she was just a sad victim would have cheered when a male version of Daisy was murdered.
@bluebay1031
@bluebay1031 Ай бұрын
I think the difference is the movie would’ve had a good chance of being narratively portrayed as a lot different if she were a guy. Toxic male figures are almost never portrayed by the narrative as toxic unless they’re family members (and even then that’s not always the case), and any accountability they’re held to is done by the fans, which isn’t the case here. Daisy is openly and objectively portrayed as toxic making it easier to feel sympathy for her and like her as a antagonistic figure, because the narrative is already doing the heavy lifting of ensuring the audience that “yes, we know this girl is very much not okay”. I feel like most people would be more open to male characters like this if they were ALSO portrayed as such, but they often aren’t, and are instead treated by the narrative as misunderstood and “just doing what they have to for love”. It’s like the difference in reception to Jared Leto’s Joker and…pretty much every other standard fare Joker.

Me and my partner (both lesbians) saw this on opening night at our local big AMC theater, most seats were empty but out of the people there, most were men. The whole time my partner and i were laughing, gasping, just reacting to how wild it was, but we were literally the only two people making any noise. And old man by himself in the row in front of us walked out about 1/3 the way through. We loved the movie but the theater experience kinda sucked. Then a week later, our local small independent movie theater was showing it, and we went to their opening night. But this was very different, the small theater was packed, almost all queer women older than 30 (they planned a big meetup on facebook apparently). Waaaaaaay better of an experience, everyone was reacting out loud the whole time, older women felt comfortable to cuddle up with each other, we were all complimentimg eachothers outfits and hair before and after the movie, it was just incredible. And it made the movie so much more important to me than just what is in the film, but how it brought out the lesbian community in my city that i rarely see, and brought us all together to watch this. As a butch myself its so incredible when i get to see and meet older butches, i get to see my future when normally we are kept from eachother. I feel so lucky to be able to experience being in that room, it meant more to me than any pride event or gay man centered bar ever could. Im so grateful that this movie was made, we need more movies like this to bring the lesbian community together. Also love lies bleeding reminded me so much of the movie Bound, but like a gritty version. If you havent seen that movie i highly recommend it.

I love that you brought up the magical realism aspect. I could see some people getting turned off by that. But having been a fan of Saint Maud, I think Glass really expanded on those aspects of subjectivity and the line between reality and the perception of it.
@LangkeeLongkee
@LangkeeLongkee Ай бұрын
Yeah I wish I liked it but I didn’t. I think Saint Maud was different tbh, maybe it’s my personal bias expecting wacky stuff like that from what was described to me as mor horror-adjacent kinda thriller than this? I had no idea this movie was gonna be campy at all, everything I’ve seen made it seem like it was going to be played totally serious like Bound or something. I’m not a huge fan of camp in general but I can enjoy it (I loved Bodies Bodies Bodies, but didn’t like Bottoms), but I’m more likely to have a problem with it if I didn’t know about it. I like don’t like being caught off guard by camp because I go into a movie taking it seriously unless proven otherwise, if it was not clear before I watched it. I really really really really wished I like it. I’m disappointed but more so in myself than the film. It’s very difficult for me to find a sapphic film I genuinely really enjoy and as a sapphic is depressing. Especially when I hear other sapphics talk about how much love XYZ iconic film, I feel like something’s wrong with me or something.

My interpretation of the ending is that Jackie was hallucinating again, she does leave the dad for the cops and runs away with Lou but Lou is bleeding out so Jackie puts her out of her misery and dumps her body as well as Daisy's. (My only evidence for this is the previous hallucinations and the fact that Lou isn't limping wgen she dumps Daisy despite having *just* been shot in the leg.)

Amanda. I need you to do me a solid. One of the most viscerally disturbing gorror movies I've ever seen is criminally underrated and no one really talks about it online. If you need a video idea please cover Proxy from 2013. It's completely insane. I've watched a lot of horror movies but this one literally made me have to pause and catch my breath at like the 4 minute mark and then the plot twists from there were just insane. The pacing was wild and just... ugh.

Might be a stretch but when Daisy answers the phone in place of Lou and turns Jackie away while she needs help it TOTALLY reminded me of Jacob answering Edward's call and not passing the phone to Bella !

It was weird in parts and cool, definitely didn't expect some of the places it went. I was jazzed for Katy and the movie delivered a really interesting role for her.

I'm just really happy seeing Kristen Stewart go back to her roots. She did amazing in _Panic Room_ when she was a kid and her reputation as an actress was awful due to her role in the _Twilight_ franchise

Great review, great film. As a movie nerd was seeing lots of movie references (jj dies similarly to the guy in lost highway, among others mentioned in the video & comments) About the sex, i liked the way it was shown in dichotomy - as both a means and an end, with both positive & negative motivations around it. I loved the ending & watching the emotional roller coaster of the last 10 minutes or so in a theater was really moving. Also I'm trying to quit cigarettes, and sometimes it really does feel like the world wants you to keep smoking.

Saw this in theatres with my best friends.. you could see our posture change throughout the film from laid back and excited at the beginning, and gradually leaning more and more forward in concentration until we ended the film with two of us standing arms crossed, staring at the screen mouths open. 🤣 (We were sitting back row and were one of only two groups in the theatre so we weren’t blocking anyone)

This movie was a weird one for me. I liked it over all and it has a great vibe. I believed the romance and the leads have chemistry but K.S. is doing that familiar Kristen Stewart acting so hard it took me out of the movie more than once. Also, the goofy deus ex magical realism ending does not fit what I want from a neo noir crime thriller. In fact, It would have been better if, instead of inexplicably growing into a twenty foot tall giant and holding the villain down, the body builder just beat him to death with her bare hands in a gory display. Then maybe K.S. calms her down, pulls her back from the edge and apologizes for getting her hooked on steroids, something, anything but this weird cop out ending. I liked the movie. I'm glad I watched it, but I can certainly see how people who paid to see this in theaters could be mad about this experimental, out-of-left-field ending

The dad didn’t do anything to stop his daughter being abused I think because he already “lost” both Lou and her mom from being overbearing it seems. That hospital scene made me think that he was scared to lose contact with the last person in his family who still loves him

I really, really, REALLY wanted to love this movie, it was so in my wheelhouse it's not even funny... but I really only loved the middle portion. The opening act was fine but kinda fell flat and didn't build up any emotional connection before going right into the "gay crime" phase. Once in that phase things really started clicking along and I definitely had a blast with the whole middle part. But then the big finale also just didn't work at all and all of the tension was sucked out of the room while also once again returning to the emotionally flat tone of the first act. By the end of the movie, I literally did not care even 1% about any character AT ALL, save Kristen Stewart's, and hers I only cared about due to Kristen's superb acting, and I simply didn't want HER to die because without her magnetic performance, I couldn't see a single reason to keep watching. It was soul-crushingly disappointing because I allowed myself to get hyped, thinking that between Kristen, Rose Glass, and A24, there was virtually zero chance of this movie letting me down - but that is exactly what it did. There was a good stretch of the middle that I truly did love, but they say you gotta start strong and finish strong, but this movie did the exact opposite. Started weak, got good, then just fizzled out. Damn shame, too, because it was SOOOOO close to being the movie I hoped, but alas it was not meant to be. EDIT: BTW, Jackie absolutely DID try to shoot Lou, you hear her pull the trigger and the gun clicks - it was empty or jammed. But Jackie definitely did pull the trigger, and the sound is what prompts Lou to deliver that INCREDIBLE reaction.

Not going to lie, I wasn’t a huge fan of her being huge at the end (I know it’s not meant to be literal but I thought it initially felt out of place) I completely missed the subtle foreshadowing of it happening, now I appreciate it and the film as a whole even more! Thank you Amanda!
