For me, I don’t hate Harper because she isn’t coming out to her family in a timely manner. It’s because she lies to Abby over and over, gives her the cold shoulder, ditches her in situations she doesn’t have to (that weird hanging out with her ex thing?), displays selfishness in her relationship with her sisters, etc. etc. etc. That being said, I started sobbing in my gf’s arms after we finished watching this and came out to my family a week and a half later lmaooo

Harper literally didn't do one single thing the whole movie to make me like her. Were we even supposed to like her? We didn't even get the chance to get to know her at the start bc their whole relationship was summed up in those pictures. We really only see who she is from the first car ride and onwards, and it's not good. Yes, coming out is hard and terrifying, but it doesn't justify everything she put Abby thru. I did feel a little sad when Harper came out and Abby said it was too late (bc I'm an empath duh), but I didn't feel bad for Harper. A story needs to have consequences, Harper needed to learn that her actions weren't okay. But obvs they scrapped all the consequences, the parents did a complete 180 personality-wise, and everything that had been set up throughout the film suddenly didn't matter anymore bc tRuE lOvE aNd ThE mAgIc Of XmAs. I was frustrated with the whole thing. I'm straight, but was totally looking forward to a funny, compelling romance between women in the movie. Then the movie was mostly about stress and shame, using some stale clichés. Felt like a bait-and-switch from the marketing. Harper was immature and selfish, and Abby just seemed really lonely. Dan Levy's monologue about coming out and Aubrey Plaza playing a mature, sympathetic character for once were the only redeeming factors for me. Lesbians deserve a better rom-com... actually, WE ALL deserve better lesbian rom-coms.

The script writer seemed to lose sight of what had actually gone on in the film. Harper being in the closet wasn't a valid excuse for a lot of the bad things she did, nor was coming out of it somehow redemptive for her bad actions. Lying to her girlfriend for MONTHS about a major life event? Staying out until all hours with an ex (when she promised she wouldn't) and then blaming her concerned girlfriend for being worried? Harper was just an awful person for most of the movie. And most of her worst actions weren't her being the closet, just her being an asshole of a person.

That actually was one issue with the movie that is really problematic. Your kids don't get into open competition for your affection unless you are narcissists. Yet they had 1 incident where truths come out, and within 24 hours they are 1 big happy well adjusted family. I can see how that incident could be an inciting factor in the family recovering, but it would take years of therapy to reach the level of well adjustment that we see. It might have been good to see the parents making arrangements to see a therapist to help them, and their children reach the normalcy of a healthy family.

It literally happens the first ten minutes. First Harper says Abby should spend time with her family for Christmas. Next she says let not go. Then she admits she lied about coming out to her parents as they’re _driving_ to there. They screwed up the gay couple within ten minutes and just goes down the drain after they keep going to the house. This infuriating. And now it’s worse when the director is an actual lesbian. How does this get so screwed up so quickly? Should’ve either shown the good early part their relationship or have Abby move on with Riley.

It's only fair that more LGBT representative romcoms be made. The straight community has suffered them alone long enough. Now to get some more lifetime thrillers made where the protagonist is a man who almost overnight falls head-over-heels in love with an upper-middle class older man whose husband disappeared under mysterious circumstances, he can have a flamboyantly straight friend who starts getting suspicious and asking questions before mysteriously disappearing as well.

I dated a girl shorter than me in high school, it was the most adorably awkward thing I ever done in my life (because I’m so use to being the short one, I’m only 5’4). Now my boyfriend is taller than me (and he’s starting to hit a little growth spurt) so he always stands next to me and goes, “Did you get shorter?” However, I wear heels most of the time, which evens out our height.

I'm 5'8'' and my girlfriend is 5'2''. I can confirm that it feels super nice and sweet to kiss someone shorter, but for me the best things about this height difference are: perfect for forehead kisses, you can tuck her under your chin, your shirts are oversized on her and that makes her 1000000x times cuter, and she can hear your heartbeat when you hug. Cons: club dancing face to face is a bit awkward and I constantly have to bend down. Regardless of height, at the end of the day, all queens deserve queens (if they want them)

That was my biggest issue. The pro-Harper arguments I've seen have all been, "We're supposed to empathize with her! She's supposed to be someone we connect with and understand." But the movie's writing doesn't give us a chance to do that. We always follow Abby and see Harper's actions through her eyes. POV is everything, and we never see anything humanizing for Harper.

Look, there's something that no one is talking about, and that is the mother. I spent the whole movie hating on her and calling her a Karen, but for me the biggest plot twist was when their daughters came clean and told them how toxic their parenting was... and that woman instantly told the father that they made a mistake and they should be better. I cried. I was so proud and happy. And, in the end, when her instagram page appeared and they were so happy and she was so supportive of Harper and Abby's relashionship... she really surprised me in the best way possible.

It might have been nice if they had a few more minutes in the beginning to establish how good Harper could be to Abby when she wasn't anxious about what her parents would think and how that would affect the affection she wanted from them. That might have made it easier to forgive Haper at the end and to see how the relationship could return to a good place. Alternatively, they could have shown Harper being manipulative and controling towards Abby so that this could be a dark romance instead of the more traditional light hearted romance. Still better than anything on the Hallmark channel.

once it was revealed she not only outed Aubrey Plaza’s character but went with the whole “she’s a lesbian that’s obsessed with me its so weird and stalkerish, help” trope, her character was ruined, imo. they should’ve just had it be her ex boyfriend asked her out, and bc they were secretly dating she said yes to the date to not be sus, and they ended up breaking up and she was devastated.

@@abbynicole4515 yes, outing her girlfriend and then reputiating her like that was extremely shitty thing to do, and it is ment to shock us, and we see that Abby was shocked by this revelation as well. Haper's only real defense is that she was 14/15 and a freshman in highschool at the time, so still very immature, but it was still really shitty. I do think, they really could have opened this movie up to be a dark romance very easily with only a few minor tweaks to the script. Give hints to Haper being abusive towards Abby. Not physically, but psychologically. They could have spent 5-10 minutes in the beginning of the film showing Haper doing to Abby some of the same things her parents did to her, where when Abby does things she doesn't like, she withholds her affection from Abby, and when Abby does things she does like, she is overly affectionate. Locking Abby into a cycle of constantly fearing "disappointing" Harper but also desperate to seek her approval. They could show how Haper was recreating the same dynamoc with Abby that she grew up with with her parents. They could even do this in just 1 scene, In their apartment, Abby is alone and makes a dinner reservatiom at a fancy exclusive super hard to get into restaurant, Harper gets home and Abby tells her about the reservation all excited. Harper complains about being tired and maybe she's just going to go straight to bed. Abby looks panicked but then blurts out thet they could go on the Christmas tour that she knows Haper likes. Harper smiles and gives Abby a big affectionate hug, maybe a snog before heading out for the tour, and then we pick up at the beginning of the movie with them on the tour were we find out why Abby wouldn't have wanted to go on it. Since we discover later in the movie that Abby moved into Harper's apartment maybe they could have shown us that this was Haper's idea, not Abby's. That Maybe Abby had renewed her lease say 2/3 months earlier and Harper only had 1 month left on her lease, so that Abby having to break her lease caused her a big financial problem, but Harper moving in with Abby could have been simply a matter of letting her lease expire. we could end the movie in 1 of 2 ways. 1: Abby forgives Harper but, and this is critical, they start seeing a couples therapist who helps Abby to be more assertive in the relationship about her own needs and wants, and to help Harper to relearn how to act and treat people, essentially to unlearn the behaviors her parents taught her so that Abby and Harper can have a healthy relationship going forward. 2: Abby leaves Harper finally realizing her own self worth and how toxic the relationship is, Haper also realizing now that she was treating Abby the same way her parents treated her, starts seeing a therapist so she can relearn how to treat the people she cares about.

Harper, to me, didn’t deserve another chance. She had more than enough times to make things right with Abby. Honestly, Riley and Abby together made me feel like it wasn’t enough chemistry there to be anything more than friends. I think Riley could tell that Harper wasn’t being honest about her sexuality and felt bad for abby before she talked about her past with Harper. Every time they ran in to each other, Harper wasn’t there half the time. Also, I applauded abby breaking it off with Harper the way she did and would have preferred her to not take her back. Plus, even if Riley went after abby when she left the house, I wouldn’t see how abby’s character would want to move on with Riley, seeing as how she was broken hearted and feeling lost, I mean, she was ready to marry her! It wouldn’t make sense.

i had SO many feelings about this movie. first off, i feel like 99% of the characters were insufferable... like the only few i actually liked were riley, abby, jane, and john... YEAH, i hated harper for how she treated abby and did not feel she need deserved a second chance that quickly. and i get that they were trying to give it a happy ending i know it's a christmas movie, but, as a bisexual woman who cannot come out to her parents because i am almost certain i would be disowned, i need a movie that has some realism because i feel like it's rare in media. at the very least make the parents need some time, like give it a year and then they've accepted it, but to immediately include abby in the family photo, it's not realistic for a lot of families. again, i know it's a christmas movie so maybe this isn't the one to gripe about but i'm starving for some tragedy here! lastly, abby should've absolutely ended up with riley for many reasons but mostly because AUBREY PLAZA. sidenote: i live in pittsburgh and had a chance to be an extra in that drag scene i had my call time and everything. i will never ever forgive myself for prioritizing sleep over being in a tiny bar with aubrey plaza and kristen stewart.
@oli_kate

OH MY GOD YOU COULD'VE MET THEM?!?!? 😲😱 Anyway to your main point: yeah the immediate acceptance was unrealistic especially when we think back to the lifestyle comment at the beginning. The Instagram thing was cute and I liked that. I feel like they could've had Abby and Harper and John go home/go to Sloane or Jane's house and had Christmas there and then we see a year later and one/both of the parents reaches out and then they talk. Or maybe the mom sees on Instagram how happy her daughter is and sees her and Abby visiting Sloane and Jane and then maybe runs into them at the book signing? Idk and then we get them unplanned going to the movie maybe? And then we get the same after credits ig stuff. Idk that would just feel more realistic.

I thought this movie would be really predictable. It actually wasn't. I watched it because Kristin (obliviously). But the storyline was really good, flow between scenes actually made sense. The way that Harper's sister outed her I thought was disgusting. Immediately after Abby's character explaining how she's frustrated and doesn't want to be with somebody who isn't out publicly I can identify with. But her friend quickly assured her that Harper being out or not out has nothing to do with her and I thought that was a really good point they made. I think a lot of times bisexual and gay people are pressured by the people around them to be out but if they're not ready they're not ready. But overall I thought this movie actually touched on a lot of things and was really fairly representative of different points of view.

I believe Amanda alluded to this, but what I would like to see is something like this RomCom where being closeted is not the conflict - and of course this story is one that resonates because there are so many people who fear being out to their families. Hopefully this is just the first of many. Representation matters. 💕🌈👍🥰

"Saving Face" was written and directed by Alice Wu, who just recently did "The Half of It." It's a gorgeous little romcom gem where the main IS closeted to her Chinese family, but while it's part of the situation it's not really the main conflict? I feel like it was handled much better there than in "Happiest Season" anyway.

I agree that there should be more romcoms where everything is the standard but the couple is the same gender, but secret-keeping is such a staple of RomComs that it really makes sense that screenwriters grab onto the natural secret that comes gift-wrapped with writing gay romance. To be fair, the secret-keeping plot for me is a whole lot more tolerable when the secret involved is something more grounded and relatable, compared to ridiculous secrets like "we're both together because of a bet" (many variations exist), "I'm both your love interest and pretending to be my own twin brother, your roommate, to play soccer on the boys team", "I've switched places with the princess because we're identical strangers I'm really a middle-class American", "The prince is secretly adopted and his nanny is secretly a reporter who snuck into the palace and then lied about her qualifications to get a story," or "I'm secretly the owner of the big box bookstore down the street trying to get yours shut down," or "any fake dating story" (many variations), ect ect ect. But that's just my personal taste-- both ridiculous romcoms and ones with more grounded conflict should exist.

@@MegaKaitouKID1412 You make a lot of sense here. I don’t know why I enjoy smarmy movies like the ones you describe. Completely unrelatable, right? I mean, WHY are there so many Princes and Princesses? And country names like Aldovia, Genovia, etc. ARRGH! It’s like not only do they have to fall in love, one of them has to be rich or live in nowheresville for a year so they can discover that living in a small town is soooooo much better than the big city. And there are always TONS of white people and the best friend who is either gay or black or both- hey, here’s an idea! How about an interracial couple? How about an interracial couple where one of the people is NB? In a world where we get vomitous movies like 365 days glorifying patriarchal bullshit and abuse and subjugation of women, could we PLEASE have some decent movies about good people of all races/genders/orientations? But I digress. TL;DR: I agree.

That is a recipe for codependency and I really thought Abbey would push back on it.

Yes! I really didn't like that line; like, a relationship shouldn't be about owing each other and paying each other back, it's not about keeping track of who is up on the other.
