At age 86, this song was a song my Dad often sang or hymned on long road trips. As i finished clean out his home after his death i sat in only chair cery tired and decided to relax and turned on a small radio. It was on a religious station and as i heard this song, well the tears flowed. I felt my dad sent me a message, ge was lifted by that love to his heavenly home. Tears in my eyes, remembering that day.

Grew up singing this song in the 1960's. We had hymn sings after church on Sunday night at someone's home and 20 or 30 would gather around and this was one of the most favourite to be sung. It has been a part of my life ever since. Wonderful lyrics and tune. My husband loved to sing this song miss his voice doing so thank you for picking it.

In my early 20s, I had just decided to turn away from the temptation of an illicit relationship. Within a few days I attended church at a little evangelical chapel where it’s song was sung. I was filled with gratitude to our Lord at the time, and almost 60 years later I still feel that joy and relief whenever I hear it.

I consider this one of essential hymns for the believer to enjoy both in the church and in private life. It is probably one of the first hymns I learned - I don't remember ever not knowing it. I love good hymns that are theologically accurate (not a couple shallow, fluffy phrases repeated ad nauseum), practical to daily life, and musically excellent (follows basic rules/structure). I think that some of the best, most beloved hymns come directly out the author's personal tragedy/experience.

I remember singing this song back in 1960’s. Today listening to your rendition, I was reminded of a childhood memory of being caught (completely unaware because I was so young) in a rip at Bondi, a popular Sydney beach. I thought others caught in it were playing with me but I did swallow some water. Then suddenly I felt these really strong hands grab me and take me to shallower water saying “You can walk from here.” I think it was many years before I realised what danger I had been in and why all the onlookers were lined up on the shore. I walked up to my waiting parents who slapped me (😂) but I guess they were thankful to have me back safe and sound. Forever grateful to our Australian Life Savers.

I remember being a small child in the 1970's when revivals happened frequently in the Bible belt. My parents were in a huge chior that performed in malls and grocery store parking lots. This was a song they sang. My first memories are listening to them practice while the kids all colored or read. ❤ They had a fantastic organist, drums and tambourines. The singers were also really good. Lots of southern gospel! Probably why my husband and I are in several singing groups now.

It's so easy to sing and easy to remember. It's sad that churches nowadays tend to listen to "worship teams" singing modern songs (most of which are not steeped in Scripture the way the old hymns are). Often the congregants don't even bother to sing along.

How can you not fall in love with this song? It's so happy. So joyful and expresses what God has done for you. Growing up in church when we sign this song in the chorus instead of just saying love lifted me, we changed it to Christ's, lifted me and alternate between the two. To this day sometimes at home I'll sing this song in my head or I'll sing it out loud and I'll still sing it the way I did growing up. It is truly a sad thing that in churches today by and large, most of what is played and sung are praise music. But the great hymns of the faith are filled with so much doctrine and music is a phenomenal way to have people learn the doctrines of the faith. This is not to say that there aren't great more recent songs and that there aren't great songs that are more current with that. Don't teach doctrine but by and large they don't.

Amen ! In just about every country I've lived in in the Carribean and South America and every state in North America, this song has been sung with gusto at youth meetings, Sunday night evangelistic meetings and what were called evangelistic crusades, from back in the 60s up until now. This is an overall beautiful, up beat song. Most importantly is that the theology of the song is correct. Call out to Jesus in your despair, even at your wits end, as Simon Peter did when he was sinking in the stormy water and Jesus will save you from certain death as He did Peter. After, you walk closely with Jesus living the sanctified, cheèrfully obedient life because you LOVE Jesus and you want to please Him. I trather like this song! Thanks for sharing it Luke.
