I have a much simpler way to do this. I scoop the litter into the plastic bags. Tie them closed and drop them into the plastic container. When it's full, I dump the bags into the trash cans outside

I have been doing something similar for a couple years, but I put a kitchen trash bag as a liner in my Tidy Cat bucket and then just drop the grocery store bags in. Works like a charm. I do not put the small bags in my kitchen trash...on trash day, I just grab the whole bag out of the bucket and place at the curb (and I have two cats as well).

I appreciate this trying to find a cheaper way to dispose of the kitty litter and clumps. I just purchased the Litter Genie and it comes with a full rebate and discounts on the bags. I also like the fact that there are multi layers to stop the smell from coming out of it. That said, I love when people try to make things that are cheaper! Thank you!

+Jerilyn Duefrene Thanks for posting. They are kind of like crack dealers. Sure...this first hit is free, but they make their money with the refills. It is a good product, but does have some drawbacks. If money ever gets tight, you now have a back up plan. Or you could spend more money on toys for the kitty. :) I change it out every other day and haven't ran into smell issues.
@lesliemorales23496 жыл бұрын
The point of this video is to show people an affordable way to keep the odor from stinking up the HOUSE like the litter genie does. This cheaper alternative works and prevents the odor from lingering in the room. If you want to spend the extra $100+ a month just so you don't smell it when you open the lid for 2 minutes, that's up to you. But I'd rather smell poop for two seconds than spend that much money on refills. Just saying. This was a great video and it has helped me tremendously :)

So I saw my empty cat litter box, just like the one in your video and had the exact same idea as you. I went on KZbin to see if anyone else had done it and that's how I ended up here. Great idea. What I did differently is: I used Hefty ultra strong, blackout, clean burst scented trash bags and stretched the draw string around the back and tied it off. I also stuck a carbon filter I had from my baby's diaper genie, on the inside lid to help in absorbing the odor.... mind you, I have four cats and three litter boxes and I live on the third floor of an apartment😂 anyways, great idea. it definitely works and makes things much easier, less messier and less smelly for literally zero cost at all.

I just bought the litter genie. I have the Breeze litter boxes for my 2 cats. With the Breeze they use pellets for litter so no dust or spillage on the litter genie inside lid. And you are Just scooping the waste so no litter clumps or expansion of litter clumps, so waste fits fine in the litter genie opening. Also, with the Breeze there is a pad on the bottom compartment of the litter box for the urine. You change the pad once a week. I have no smell from the pad when its inside the bottom compartment. I love the Breeze litter box and so far the litter genie is working well. Just sharing my experience. I do appreciate people sharing creative ways to say money Thank you

Patty Aiello I too have the Breeze litter box. I don't use their pellets though. I use equine pine pellets. They turn to sawdust when wet. I scoop poop out daily and stir the pellets up so the sawdust falls to the bottom. Love it! I also removed the tray and put one of those $4 tray litter boxes from dollar General under it, only have to dump the sawdust once every other week for two cats. I still put a puppy pad in the dollar General litter box though. This has saved me so much money! One 40lb bag of the pellets is 5 dollars and lasts 3 months or so!

I do the same thing with the old litter buckets, but I completely yank the whole lid off, and put a tall kitchen garbage bag in, fold it over the sides and snap the lid back on and change it every week with the garbage and just scoop the waste in every night.

I do the same; the first time with a new bucket it’s hard to pull off, but gets easier each time after that, and still secure. I found Menard’s bags are my favorite as they’re thicker and stronger than regular grocery bags. Haven’t had as much luck with Target litter pails; their lid is a different design and is almost impossible to pull off.

This was THE first thing I tried before getting a litter genie. PEW-YEW! I even used scented trash bags, AND put litter "deposits" into grocery bags, then tossed the mess into the bucket 😐 😑 😒 The stink still rose up outta the pail. SO... I went ahead and got litter genie. I LLLOVE IT TO PIECES! Big cat ; Big potties... no way around it. I use the litter scooper to "half it" before dumping in kinda small 😅 😬 😳 hole. Wha-lah!😁 No messy fuss, no STINK!

Thanks for this idea, I just implemented this yesterday and it's much much better than throwing everything into a 30-gal garbage can and letting it build up over 2 or 3 weeks. The 30-gal bag would accumulate and had a lingering odor that pervaded the house, even with a cover over it. I had been looking at litter genie / diaper genie solutions but I found them complicated and expensive. What you want for a job like this is simplicity. After doing this, and throwing out the 30-gal bag (which was only 1/3 full at most), the lingering odor from the laundry room where my cats' litter box is, is almost completely gone. It's much easier and safer in the end to deal with a small bag of waste once or maybe twice a week, than a whole 2 or 3 weeks' worth of accumulated waste. And the risk of a major hazmat spill from a large bag is now minimized.
@macycharmin8 жыл бұрын
Love it! I had a 90's version of the Litter Locker (twist handle) and it was a pain to use and the rolls of bags weren't cheap. I ended up using grocery bags, tying them off and keeping them at one residence in a 5 gal paint bucket on the back patio under a homemade cinder block shelf unit, and when I moved I kept them in the garage. In either case it was good enough storage until the trash pickup came.
@lindafrancey70867 жыл бұрын
I used a similar idea. However, a 10 lb dog food storage container with an overlapping snap down lip at the front, has worked quite well. Bought it from a dollarama store for very little. Lined it with a white, regular kitchen garbage bag, and then put a biodegradable compost bag over the front 3/4 of the bin (including the lip). Stored the spare bags down the back 1/4, ready to go. Since I have a very large cat, I also wanted something with a bigger hole for dumping purposes. Once I've scooped, I can snap the lid down. Every 2 - 3 days, I can tie the bag where it's sitting, and take it out to the green bin in the garage. Next bag sets up in 2 seconds. I wiped the inside of the lid with an air freshener, and can close off the bag to remove it in just a few seconds. So far, it's working quite well.

Thanks Steve, for the good video and the great idea. I have 5 large cats and I'm guessing they would fill a Genie in no time. I love your grocery bag idea and adapted it to my current method of lining an old bucket with 8 gal garbage can liners. 5 cats produce a lot of waste so it has to go out daily. The Tidy cat container will work for the cat sitter when I am on vacation.

good idea if you don't care about the smell. the special bags that go in the litter genie are what stops the smell. they have several layers with charcoal in them so there is no smell for up to 2 weeks. grocery bags are going to stink even with the lid closed. unless you empty it everytime.

So I stumbled on your vid, what a great idea. Why didn't I come up with that! I am going to use your idea but with a larger garbage bag inside with one of those annoying grocery bags we have a ton of on top. Wrap the used grocery bag and let it drop to the bottom. I can keep the litter container outside the garage. I stopped using my litter Genie because of the refills. I left it in the garage and when I thought of using it again, found a garage spider living in it. Thanks for sharing your idea.

You have to cut the litter genie bag off to empty it, but you pull out more bag from the refill... I do just use the tidy cat container with doubled up regular trash bags. I just scoop with one hand and open and close the lid with the other in each scoop. It does smell when scooping but when the lid is sealed, there's no smell.

I have something slightly more elaborate - a small trash can with liner inside of a lidded bucket. If it's still smelly for you, then you need to use a better litter made to block odors and change the bag daily. You can also buy rolls of scented 4gallon trash liners at about $3 for a month's supply.

I know this is an older video now but I recently found refill bags for the refills and they are much more affordable then the refill catridges. I had 2 empty catridges so it worked out great! They were scented too. I do agree about the opening with the litter genie being too small. I have to break the big clumps up with the scoop and it gets pretty messy sometimes. I haven't tried the XL version yet.

I do something almost exactly like this, but with the smaller container, with the lid that pops all the way off. I use PetCo SoFresh Grass Seed Litter, which really does a great job controlling odors. And I sprinkle baking soda each day for additional odor control. Instead of the bungee cord, I use extra-large rubber bands. I use them on my regular garbage and trash containers as well, as they work perfectly, and last a long time. Easier for arthritic fingers than a bungee cord.

Always great to recycle. But the litter genie refill is 14 feet long. It lasts several months for my one cat. I tie off about a foot or so and dispose about every two weeks. Also the litter genie has a double lock system to control smells. After you scoop the waste falls to the bottom when you slide the handle. When you scoop a second time the first waste is below the sliding mechanism. So scoop, close the lid, then slide the handle. Helps with the smell.

buy litter genie once, use regular trash bags as refill. You get the benefit of sealing the odor via the trap door, as well as the cost effectiveness of using trash bags you already have.
@mariab.19976 жыл бұрын
You can buy a bag of file sized rubber bands for less than the bungee. They should last as long and cost less. We use them in the office and schools to keep the plastic bag liners on the pails the same way you use the bungee. I suggest you get a box of larger bags and either use the drawstring or rubber band to secure it in the bin but under the whole lid. Then secure the grocery bag inside the larger one with a second band. Scoop once or twice and tie off the smaller bag and drop it inside. Set up another grocery bag and repeat. When the bin is full of tied off bags you remove 5he large bag containing them. This will also help keep odors down. Vets recommend you have one litter box more than you have cats if you have more than one cat. However some homes are too small to support 3 or 4 litter boxes. My friend manages her 4 cats by scooping every time she passes or uses the bathroom. Trust me, it's often! But she fits the litter box and the genie and it works out well for them. This is a wonderful solution. Thanx!

This works great. There's no need to buy activated carbon bags/charcoal whatever it is. The bucket seals off and smell does not travel through it. My nursing cats poop often and I don't feel like carrying poop to the dumpster 5 times a day.

If you use the Tidy Cat bucket with the lid that comes all the way off (not flip), the grocery bags fit fine around the lip of the bucket. No bungee needed. A 5-gallon bucket works, too, and can be found in the paint section of home improvement stores. Or, if "your" being cheap, as previously accused, save the 5-gallon bucket from your next drywall project.
@vestcoat6 жыл бұрын
I use this method...using a shorter plastic litter container and slightly larger grocery bags. The lid is removeable so the bags can be folded over the entire edge and there is no need for the bungies. I keep a small spray bottle filled with ZERO ODOR......a great neutralizing liquid spray nearby, and every time I scoop out poops and put them in the bin I spray 4 shots of Zero Odor in the bin before closing it. It really neutralizes the waste and I don't find it offensive at all the next time I open the bin lid to toss some more waste in there. When the kitties only pee and I scoop out the clump and toss it in the bin I do not feel the need to spray in there. I use corn litter that seems to neutralize the urine odor. A few sprays in the litter box after a poop is also nice to freshen the litter......it has no odor itself. You can probably use other sprays but I love this brand......at Amazon or from the company direct online.

I live in an apartment and was looking for an easy way to dispose of my cats waste without having to run to the dumpster every time I scooped the litter. I tried something like this using an empty litter bucket to dispose of the grocery bags filled with cat waste. I tied the grocery bags off before disposing them into the empty litter bucket. It sounded like a good thing, but actually, the lid is not air tight and therefore does not seal well enough to stop the order from dispersing into the air. With this idea, loose waste is being put into the bucket without it being tied off, I can only imagine the oder that eventually spills out into the room. This may work for some, but it wasn't the best idea for me.

I'm so glad I watched these videos, I though the litter genie might have a bit better innovation than just a trap door type thing to shut out the smell.... It will help at first but it won't take too long for the odour to seep through the non-airtight seams... I'll stick with my initial idea which was very close to this except it involves scented baking soda at the bottom of the bucket and scooping the waste into little doggie bags first dropping those in the bag in the airtight bucket. Living in an apartment that "subtle odour" won't stay subtle very long loll

Update. Threw away the three large cat boxes on the table and replaced them with two jumbo cat boxes (Amazon). Now there's also room on the table for this "genie." No bending. Your system means I don't have to hold a bag open with one hand. I really like this brainstorm of yours. please tell me if I'm wrong. The point of all of this is for the sake of keeping dirty litter inside the house as long as you could without smelling it?!? I say scratch that whole idea and go with a cat Genie like I did. It’s absolutely awesome the most you have to do is about once every six months is clean the hair off the inside which can be done with gloves and a box cutter. I’ve even heard people use Drano. I’m a little shy of that one yet. But connect it to a water source and an outlet and you never have to change that litter them again. I really wish I had room for another one or two of these. That litter Genie? That is the same thing as nothing. Under the open the sliding glass door and flip that stuff out the middle of the yard. Did I clarify that and to see the neighbors yard?

I cant imagine how bad that would smell when you open it up thats a hard PASS.

Do you smell your cat box? I try not to. I also wouldn’t bother with the liner. It’s a shit bucket. It doesn’t need to be clean inside. Pop it open dump the stuff, close it.

Brilliant! I almost bought the Litter Genie until I got a good look at it. Why would anyone purchase such a redundant device? I used a 5 gallon bucket and lid from Home Depot. Anyhow, thank you for the great idea with the Tidy Cat container...very smart!

Thank You. That's the main point. There are several very cheap alternatives to buying and being trapped using an expensive system. Glad you liked it.

A litter genie is legit 20-25 bucks.. & it keeps the smell in. I was using the giant tub method but it smells when scooping. Litter genie is better 🤷🏼♀️

You could replace an expensive car with a cheaper bike and still have transportation. The problem is the capability and the overall benefits of the bike are fewer and not equal to the car. You didn't make a "cheaper litter genie" you made a trash can.

You crack the potty cakes if they are too big for the opening of the bag, there isn't a problem fitting it in neatly. Plus the whole thing is open, not sealing between dumps means your room will smell like the cat box as if the box were full of crap. The whole purpose is lost. What you made is a top lifting garbage can, that you can get for 5.00 at any home goods or kitchen dept...stinky and gross.

I see a lot of people who haven't even tried this method complaining that it wouldn't keep the odors down. Well, why couldn't one take a charcoal cartridge and velcro it to the inside top of the bucket lid? That way it can be changed out every few months and it would help absorb the odor. Thanks for the video @xyim . I had a littler genie in my amazon cart before I watched this. Not anymore :)

A little twist I am trying is using 6 gallon trash bags from the dollar store in my Litter Genie instead of buying the liner refills. A little more work but also I get to keep the odor blocking mechanism of the Genie. Either method saves tons of money of those refills.

You are awesome! Thank you so much I am have to start saving some money!

I tried this & I used a 13 gal bag but still had to twist it & close the bucket to keep the smell down. This works to hold it, but not to keep odor down if you can't throw it out every day.

I use those bags all the time and the container idea is a great idea! Been thinking on what disposal system to purchase that I can hack when needed with regular bags. The bungee cord is a good idea but have to be careful not to contaminate it with waste, unless they also come plastic coated? that just me. I also think using a small kitchen trash bag would fill out the container.
@kelly880110 жыл бұрын
I've been using my containers for years but never thought to use the over abundance of store bags in them. I wish they'd come out with biodegradeable containers for the litter for just seems so wasteful with all of these plastic containers that we just toss. :(
@xyim9 жыл бұрын
+Kelly Foote Thanks for the posting. I agree!! I have found a way to sell off my extra empty containers. I find that you can post on graigslist to sell them off. They make great storage pails. I also found that grafts people using them for parts storage.

Anyone notice the huge bug problem in this video ? I'd rather put a garbage bag in the bucket and put the small tied up bags of waste in it

+Jennifer Moore Thanks for the post. I have been using the same setup since the video and still no issues. Best idea is to find what works best for you and run with it.

Wow - your cats must really poop a lot to have to change a Litter Genie bag every couple of days. I've had a Litter Genie for a about 5 years and love it. I have two cats and one cartridge lasts about two months----not two days. I buy the cartridges in pkgs of 12 and they last about two years. I think your method is great and would be great if you're on a tight budget, but it would really stink every time the lid is raised to drop the most recent waste. I'm staying with the litter Genie - shop around and you can find cartridges for less than $6 per.

I live in Utica NY i got my litter genie at Wal-Mart it came with a package of bags says last bout 6 to 7wks i use it on my 1 cat only is that good. Mine is called Litter Genie Essential.

Great idea. Thanks for sharing. I currently use a diaper pail & large trash bag. But it gets really smelly & it's too heavy for me to carry out to the trash.
@xyim9 жыл бұрын
+BeaDaNurse Thanks for posting. I would say smaller is better. With this, you should empty every other day to avoid it getting too heavy and preventing any odor issues. Best to you and your kitty.

I have been getting my Litter Genie refills from Ebay and they are somewhat cheaper there, esp. if you get the multi-packs. I used to get the 4 gallon trash can liners scoop into them and tie them off. Litter Genie is a lot better. I have 3 cats..two of them use the scoopable litter and my little girl cat prefers the conventional litter.

But when you open your lid to your homemade poop bucket, you will get a really strong whiff of all the 💩. It’s awful.

I do the same thing using an old tall drink pitcher. Works great. I have so many grocery bags I double them and throw them out after each scoop--NO ODER. P.S. I don't need the bungee cord with my pitcher because the bags exactly fit inside.

Lol...$2 "stretching it" on the bungee cord. Thanks. Going to try this. Another plus...its easier to move around to multiple cat boxes than a Genie would be.

If your cat pee clumps are as big as a soft ball. You aren't scooping enough. Biggest clump my cats make is about size of golf balls.
@lindseycassella30157 ай бұрын
Cats with kidney disease or diabetic urinate a lot. Those clumps do get big.
@KimberleyB4 жыл бұрын
This is a good idea, but it doesn't replicate what the Litter Genie does. With your design, when you open the lid, the smell from all that old scooped litter is released into the air. Doesn't the Litter Genie have that slider that keeps the odor from wafting up?

Thinking outside the ...litter box ! CA-Touché ! 😸
@allisoncote33509 жыл бұрын
I'm going to give this a shot. We just got a kitten today, so we have now become a two cat household. Our first cat has larger waste deposits, so I usually have to break the clumps in order to get it in the Genie. Smell is a factor, but what if you were to try larger bags? Like a scented garbage bag and put an air freshener in the bottom of the bucket or Arm & Hammer Litter Deodorizer in the bottom of the bag? I'll give this a shot, but keep my Litter Genie just in case. Thanks for the hack!
@BeaDaNurse9 жыл бұрын
Using a large bag inside will make things VERY HEAVY. I currently use just an old-school diaper pail, lined with a trash bag. And the smell of ammonia after a few day is pretty bad. I think this guy's idea is great!
@allisoncote33509 жыл бұрын
True, but not waiting until the bag is too heavy to carry would help. I guess the best line of defense in odor control is don't let the bag sit. Scoop and throw away immediately. :)

dont do it its dumb. all that is gonna cost the same amount for the genie

+Allison Cote Thanks for posting. I change it out every other day. I have not had any smell issues and I have been using the same setup prior to the making of the video. As I mentioned in other comments, this is not for long term storage and should not be encouraged as the smell will get bad.

My issue with the litter genie is that: 1. I don't know when the bags run out. So when it finally did, the remainder of the bags fell through and that's messy. 2. When there's weight in the litter genie, the contraption opens when you pick it up from the handle.
@xyim9 жыл бұрын
+dantvo Been there and seen that. Hopefully this will be more helpful for you.

There is nothing about this that is a good idea. LOL..I have done that. The pail begins to stick after a couple of days. Impossible to get the smell out of the plastic pail. The grocery bags have holes in them usually. The plastic bags rip on the bungee cord. Etc Etc Etc. The list of bad things just keeps going.
