I wrote my first "love note" in the 70's in 3rd grade. I got caught, and Mrs Wray read it to the class. I don't remember what I wrote, but I was embarrassed. The other kids made fun of me the rest of the day. Lol

I found some love notes hidden behind the drawers of an old vanity, they were from kids in the 1970's and had words like groovy in them. There was alot of drama and gossip in them so I think that's why they were hidden behind the drawer instead of in it.

Exactly. Passing notes in class was always 'dangerous'--and many sharp-eyed teachers were responsible for stopping the communication flow. ('Crib notes' during tests were also a dicey business!) Can't imagine a child wouldn't want to keep a love note as a keepsake.

Those don't look even close to 200 years old. The paper types, the penmanship, the use of pencil, the reference to swings, the vocabulary; just not right. I'd say they're likely more like 125 years old.
@theOlLineRebel8 күн бұрын
I think it’s over a long period of time. The earliest might be as old as the building itself. They didn’t say how long the school endured but did indicate multiple time periods. The swing referred to would be the literal porch/yard/child item, BTW, and not some kind of music.
@JohnMcGlothlin-l7j7 күн бұрын
@@theOlLineRebel I understand what type of swing was referred to. Those weren't at all common until the late 1800s, houses or otherwise. If they really thought they had anything close to 200 years old I think they'd have shown such in the video. What they do show aren't 200 years old. Interesting find and article but simply mistitled.
@mrfester426 күн бұрын
Get grip! First of all they didn't show all of them but there were a few shown with old style quill pen writing.
@theOlLineRebel6 күн бұрын
@@mrfester42 you’re correct, it wasn’t a thorough sample of everything, this is just a clip for a short news story.
@theOlLineRebel6 күн бұрын
@@JohnMcGlothlin-l7j actually, a “swing” doesn’t have to be an official piece. Just anything people made into it. Ropes to creeks can be “swings”. So I’d disagree that it means something late 1800s. I’m sure people were making their own fun swings before any serious attempt was made to have a manufactured and purchased product.

They remained because they were hand made. This present generation with digitalization will not leave traces of life if it gets blowed out from existence. Can you see also the way kids did write? Compare with now days, it is shameful how handwriting has been denigrated, degenerated, and desecrated even in schools. It is a disgrace.

I like to think those mocking drawings of the teachers got saved from the teacher slamming their pointing stick on them when the kids drawing them got caught and the teacher would crush it up and then punishment. For every drawing that was saved is a kid that was spared of the rod.

I discovered old 'love' letters written home to Maine from Civil War soldier, David Stone Libbey - at an unlikely place - a university library down south. How did letters he mailed home to Sunkhaze, Maine get transported back down south? And who was David Stone Libbey? His journals, letters and writings tell the story in the book "David Stone Libbey - He was Penobscot." Having those old documents is living history.
