This whole song is actually a pretty good example of reincorporation! The original Love Psalm was an instrumental piece that played during the credits of the "Born From a Wish" segment of Silent Hill 2. If you recall the plot of SH2, Maria is actually an apparition created by Silent Hill to torture James for killing his wife. In essence, Maria is, well, Born from a Wish, James' desire to punish himself warps reality and creates a new person from nothing. It's only fitting then, that Love Psalm reappears in Book of Memories, which is a game about modifying reality based on your wishes and the dark consequences that can cause. Pretty good!
@simpcatcher131yes73 жыл бұрын
I kinda reinterpreted Maria's presence a little differently, but I love your take on it! I kinda thought she was a psuedo wet dream brought to life for James, a visage of his desire for what his wife could be, a sleazy tiger skirt adorned woman who manipulates the hell outta' him. Either way, great song 🍻
@filthandfury3 жыл бұрын
It's pretty fitting then that this song features both Troy Baker and Mary McGlynn since they voice James & Maria in SH2 HD which came out around the same time as BoM.
@Omicron99993 жыл бұрын
@@simpcatcher131yes7 She is, but she's also there to torture him. By having to watch his idealised version of Mary die over and over again no matter how hard he tries to save her, James is forced to face up to the reality that he killed her. Most of the enemies in SH2 have to do with James's sexual frustration and the revulsion James felt for Mary's disease by the end (ever checked out Mary's in game model from the In Water ending? Those skin textures man... jeez), and Maria represents his ideal fantasy version of Mary - sexy, flirty, mysterious and dependent on him to protect her. And no matter what he does, he can't ever save her.
@yormthepimp26413 жыл бұрын
Another way I like to see it, is that Maria actually was how Merry was when James was terribly in love with her, hence she was literally born from a wish, James wish to see his beloved Merry again.

Is it not worth the risk to create Just one more try? I know that I can fix it If you could rewrite our life any way that you please Would you tear out the pages of our memories? Would you take back the pain and all the hurt we create? Or could you be satisfied with the love that you've with me? "And so we rewrite our lives but it's not what we think, in the chaos we dance as we stand on the brink, always one step away from making ourselves complete."

No, Silent Hill, I can never take back memories about you, even if that means having to experience heartbreaks and all the hurt we create everytime I think of you. I wouldn't trade my love of you for the world. The world is perishing in flames now, and you have already long faded away. Farewell, but remember, I'm here and waiting for you, you crazy diamond!

The lyrics make me think of someone who just got out of a long and serious relationship, looking back and just trying to process it all. "Was it all worth it?" "Did any of it matter in the end?" "Was our love even real?" "Could I have done things differently?" "Should I have done things differently?" "Would our love have been worth saving at all?" "Would it have been better if we were never together in the first place?" I suppose this thought process could apply at least partly to SH2, albeit in a morbid way.

1. In all fairness, Silent Hill has very seldom used the appearance and attire of a character to inform of us of their story. It's happened, but it's happened so rarely that it's not a big loss in the face of drawing the player-character connection. 2. Maybe. If it makes you feel any better, the game DOES give us more details on things like the Order and their theology, and how the Otherworld appears to work when pressed into unfamiliar territory, which I appreciate.

One this probably came out right after downpour 2012 and the second reason light comes back from the ashes with his death note fixing every mistake he ever made for the better instead of for the worst, this book is different. This book is fixing every single mistake he ever made making the world a better place bringing back his dad, his girlfriend, misa his college girlfriend that all got trapped in the crossfires of the 37 episode death Note combined with silent Hill

+Sergi Medina "Furthermore, if only 3 or 4 games of a franchise are good from a total of 9 or 10, is the franchise a good one? The majority of titles are crap! So it does matter..." Yeah, because the Godfather franchise just totally sucks doesn't it? Yet there is this mysterious force of nature that continues to propel the original film, the "99% of everyone who sees it loves it" entry in the franchise, to this status of "must see" that is so compelling that even people who generally hate watching movies end up watching it and loving it. Silent Hill has a SEQUEL that's comparably just as good in terms of well executed and beloved fiction. The original is such a masterpiece that they were able to take what was officially acknowledged as "the worst ending" from it and turn it into one of the best "re-imaginings" in the history of anything. Also possibly one of the best modern interpretations of the classic "survival horror experience". I think everyone who has played it has one of those "stayed up way too late in the dark because I really wanted to see where this story was going and OH GOD THEY'RE CHASING ME" memories that they share with their therapist at some point and then immediately stop going to therapy because they're also scared of their therapist now. It's precisely because of this sort of enduring legacy that, after several mediocre-at-best entries in the series as it continues to stagnate in the absence of Yamaoka, Konami has decided to bring in TWO other geniuses, one who excels at producing and directing video games, the other who excels at producing and directing "things like Silent Hill but they are movies instead of games yet somehow still manage to provide the same sorts of feelings and experiences as any fan of both will attest". I am in the "still needs involvement from Yamaoka and McGlynn" camp regarding the new game, but even without their presence I find it hard to believe I will give the game anything lower than "HNGH YEESSS" as a rating. Went to leave a comment and accidentally article. Oops.

The story involves a book that uses the Order's magic to rewrite your memories and universe. If that's not a valid excuse to have the Otherworld break it's usual rules, I don't know what is. It's like rewriting a program while it's in the middle of executing. Shit's going to get weird.

3. Again, back to my second second point, that sounds awesome, it's just been badly packaged. 4. Within the first few minutes of the game: Valtiel shows up, The Mailman from Downpour shows up, and you're already within the Otherworld. It's already breaking canon with at least the first and last. And yes, gameplay did define much of SH:the horror, the drama, the connection with the bad fighting skills of the character, all immersed the player. Btw thanks for being civil, this is fun. XD

If the love story was our journey with Silent Hill was the lovestory, would you be willing to rewrite it alongside erasing all the pain and suffering it had caused. What if you were given the chance to destroy the force that would eventually corrupt Silent Hil's ability to manifest human thought. What if you could save all the poor souls that wondered into that town, or into the other world? The characters wouldn't grow in person, but they would be spared an arduous journey by blood and darkness

Hrmm... The Order still existed, despite a few of its leaders dying, another Alessa was created (meaning there was still a chance of the birth of God being achieved), and the cult itself is still shrouded in mystery. We aren't really given much information on them, and the things shared early on were misleading. We didn't know many of their doctrines, or what their "Paradise" was. Admittedly, 3 wasn't needed, but it wrapped up the game's story very nicely.

Oh.My.God. You know what I just realized? This would have been an awsome chance for Konami to breach reality. If this song was instead directed towards the relationship between the player (not the player character itself mind you) and the series as a whole this whole premise for time travel could have been redone intirely. What if you were given a chance to help the protagonist of each, given the chance to help them find peace or avoid the conflict that silent hill brought on entirely? Would u?
