I love how the magic in this series feels, well, like magic. Don't get me wrong, I love a good Sanderson style hard magic system but the the more interpretive, heavier on abstracted symbology magic on display here toes the line between making sure the viewer can understand how the system operates in general while still leaving a sense of mystique. It gets you thinking about what could pop up next, or how things could be done differently. Like, how would things have changed of the Chise was given purified salt to cast instead of a gorse branch? Could she have used a cloak purified with holy water instead of snowmelt or would that mess with the more shamanistic magic she and Elias practice?

I love what he told her about loving the world. That the world she'd lived in may not have been her ally, but it wasn't her enemy either. Saying the key was in the lock and her needing to turn it was his way of saying it was in her power to change her life and world...to make it better. I also love the pause he took when she asked if he loved this world. The pause he took before saying "sure" was like him saying that he was trying...that he's always trying. I think that's why he wants to understand humans and emotions so badly because he wants to love the world but it's hard because "his world" doesn't always love or appreciate him. The fea condemn him except when they need him...and humans have been the same. The church watches him and treats him with suspicion...until they need him....then they pull out the manners.

Mille I may not have read the manga or anything but my guess is if more or so he was just like chise no place to call home nor no one excepting for who and what he is. 300 years ago he was a monster that ate humans than something happened that change him to what he is today. In the speech he just gave Chise he said that someone told him the samething once. So it’s tells that he was very much like Chise.

Cried2dreamagain yea... tho I have to say I was amazingly close despite not reading the manga. The lady gave him the same somewhat speech. Claimed he had eaten humans before. Wandered around after leaving his friend for years. Just from this scene it’s tell a lot. Too bad it’s over.

Why is no one pointing out how ominous and suspicious Elias's reply to Chise is at the end? Jeez this scene has been bugging me for so long. It's obvious that was a lie, but I want to know what exactly Elias's story is.

But that long ominous pause, and the realization later in the episode that Elias is being dishonest to try to make Chise comfortable really makes his answer seem like a lie. Like he's hiding something. I think that pause has to have more meaning behind it.

Niko butts. Elias doesn't "feel" like the rest of us, he understands what emotions are & how to aptly respond to others emotional states, but he can't reciprocate those feelings. When Chise asked if he loved the world, he just gave her the answer that made the most sense to give in that moment.

@@Calus767 Elias is an inhuman though. They absolutely detest lies in this universe. He may be omitting information from her, but he most likely wouldn't outright lie to her. And perhaps the pause meant to signify him thinking about how he feels about the world, and what his answer to the question is.

He is not always honest, and knowing a little of his past up to the current point in the manga his hesitancy makes sense, but he is probably more or less ambivalent towards the world. At this point in the story anyhow.
