John Hughes films are pretty much all great. Mostly set in Illinois in or near Chicago where he grew up. They include National Lampoon's Vacation, Christmas Vacation, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, the Breakfast Club, Planes Trains and Automobiles, and Home Alone. His stories published in National Lampoon magazine about the vacations he took as a child (upon which the 1st two Vacation movies were based) are also classic. I think Uncle Buck is my favorite John Candy movie. But he was also good in The Great Outdoors opposite Dan Ackroyd. Super talented, likeable, and funny guy but he was usually only cast in small supporting roles. I think this film shows that he deserved more than that.

This is my favorite John Candy film. While I think Planes, Trains, and Automobiles is a better film, I think this is John Candy's best performance. I love how he goes from irresponsible loser to caring parent over the length of the film. He even forgoes a huge payday so that he can look out and care for his niece, especially after everything that she had done. It really shows how much he had grown as a character and what it takes to be a good parent, or at the very least a great uncle. Great performances from the entire cast. Such an enjoyable film to watch every time.

Oh hey! My mom (who was watching this over my shoulder) just reminded me of a GREAT but very under-appreciated John Candy film, hilarious, and one of the rare ones where he's in the lead role. It's called Delirious. He plays a writer for a corny day-time soap opera who ends up trapped inside the world or the soap opera he writes for. The jokes make more sense if you've ever seen any day-time soaps before (excellent send-up of the whole genre and how ridiculous, contrived, and melodramatic the stories always are)... but... just a really really funny movie. I think in Candy's top 5 easily. Which might be... 1. Uncle Buck 2. Delirious 3. The Great Outdoors 4. Planes Trains and Automobiles 5. Spaceballs ... just in terms of Candy's role and performance in each not necessarily in terms of the quality of the film overall. Honorable mention to Stripes.

John Candy had a small but hilarious supporting role in National Lampoon's Vacation (1983) and a bigger and still funnier one in Splash (1984) with Tom Hanks. Both also featured Eugene Levy (of American Pie and Schitt's Creek). Buck's girlfriend starred with Kevin Costner in Field of Dreams. Gaby Hoffman appeared in Sleepless in Seattle with Meg Ryan (Top Gun) and Tom Hanks, and was a regular on TV's Transparent. Jean Louisa Kelly is better remembered for Mr. Holland's Opus (1995) starring Richard Dreyfuss (Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, The Goodbye Girl, Steven Spielberg's Always, The American President, and What About Bob? with Bill Murray of Ghostbusters).
