Love or control-which do you choose?
This is something a mentor said to me a long time ago and it became a major theme of my Fantasy Romance series, DAINDRETH'S ASSASSIN.
I really love these books and I'm currently working on getting the fifth and final one into audiobook and paperback!

I also see a parallel with abusive relationships - attempting to control someone, even for good intentions, can breach trust and may never recover, and acceding to commands can feel like love (or even become a twisted one-sided kind of love), but the power dynamics makes it almost impossible for that relationship to be anything but harmful.

I will describe this as I just did to a friend when sharing this video: "This is an excellent thought from a cool person."

It's a very cool dynamic to explore. I would make the argument that love and control CAN exist together, but it often twists a relationship away from the selfless love that people should aspire to build with each other (romantic or platonic). Love can still exist, but it will be unequal and will often become selfish (i say "often" instead of "always" because the mildest form of control can be a reasonably protective partner). I appreciate that your book explores the more extreme examples though, and that you can almost sympathize with how these villains (antagonists? idk i havent got to the end yet LMAO, we'll see how bad they get) believe they are exerting this authority for A Greater Good.

You caught me with fantasy heroine tropes shorts (love them) and now I've bought the first DA book. Your love and control theory makes me think of D/s relationships. The submissive has the control (stop or continue) but that only works if the Dominant is honorable. That pretty much sums up all relationships/contracts/laws. There is always a way to abuse something if an individual has no honor.

I agree about love and control being incompatible, but I'm not sure I would agree that swearing yourself into someone's service is actually letting them control you if you offered your fealty freely. I think serving others is a beautiful sign of respect and courage and trust, and I'm really interested in the dynamics between servants and masters throughout history - sometimes I would argue the servants held more control over their liege lords because they depended so utterly on their services to survive. P.G. Wodehouse is most famous for his comedy, but he also explored this social balance very deeply in his books. Edit for spelling. Can someone kill autocorrect for me, please?

Question: If each partner has the freedom of not loving someone isn’t that also a way of being in control? Or was it more about controlling another person? I personally think in a relationship you should be in control of your own actions, decisions and feelings but you cannot control your partner to grant them the same control over themselves.

I don't think biological commitment and individual control are the same thing.

I haven't read the books yet, but my understanding was that in the sandsea world, she wrote in a biological soulmates component, so they can only have children with one person at a time. There's no magic that says you have to stay with someone, so it's not about control, you could leave the relationship whenever U want, it's just that neither of you can have babies with someone else. Theoretically, you could have sex with someone else afterwards, U just can't have babies with them? Edit: just re-watched the short, so it's kind of more like a mutual connection? So no control component on either side, but a bit like a love spell in that both parties would have no interest in other people, unless maybe one of them dies?
