smoke on the water by deep purple. 1972. 19 at the time and everyone had the 'machine head' 8 track in their car. lotsa muscle cars then. one of the very early albums considered metal. maybe almost started it but LOVEBITES is keeping the flame lit. 50 years later

Bitten!!!! Congratulations on finding the best new metal band to come along in decades. In their five years of existence as a band, they set a standard that easily puts them on a par with the greatest bands of metal’s golden age. Their founder and bassist announced her departure on Aug 17, 2021, so we can only hope they find a way forward. Meanwhile, we console ourselves with their astonishing catalogue of work. Other reviewers have described them as alien superheroes disguised as young women, angels sent to save us, princesses of metal, and angry bridesmaids. Whatever the description, I think one can say they have given metal a badly needed makeover and maybe a new lease on life. They have themselves said that part of their mission is to save heavy metal from darkness and obscurity. Some background: They were formed in 2016 from the remnants of a legendary all-girl Japanese metal band called Destrose (yes, all-girl metal has been a thing in Japan since at least 1981). Miho (bass, chief headbanger and soul of the band) had a vision of a new band in the style of the greatest European bands of the golden age of metal. She recruited her former bandmate Haruna (drums, 4'9" “pocket nuclear reactor”); they needed two world-class guitarists, and so they went and found Midori and Miyako, who were with other bands. The whole group then found Asami, the singer, who was doing soul and blues at the time (she also trained in ballet). Miho and Miyako have composed most of their music, in collaboration with Mao, the lead composer of another band called Lightbringer, but Midori has also been getting into the act. Asami writes a lot of the lyrics. They studied all the great historical metal bands going back to Purple and Sabbath, through Maiden, Priest, Metallica, Helloween, Slayer etc. and aced it all. They toured with Dragonforce in 2019, and word from those in attendance is that next time around, it will be the ladies headlining. They have incorporated some of the best of each of those bands into their arsenal, and at this point they’ve taken it to another level. This is one of their usual first songs for reactors, and rightly so--you get a good sense of the band. They do everything from soulful power ballads to heavy thrash, and almost every song includes face-melting solos by Miyako and Midori. The two guitarists are quite different in style and tone. Midori (blonde ponytail) is the extrovert and speed demon; Miyako is the introvert, with the more soulful feel. Midori uses a cleaner tone, Miyako uses more distortion, pinch harmonics and pedal effects. The contrast makes their duets rich and dynamic. As another reviewer said, "It seems criminal these two are allowed to be in the same band." Either one can smoke most of the shredders in the classic metal bands. Miyako is also a professional-level classical concert pianist, and was headed for a career in classical music, before picking up the guitar. LOVEBITES was formed in 2016 by leaders Miho (bass) and Haruna (drums). He made his major debut in 2017, played an active part mainly in Japan, the UK and the EU, attracted the attention of the music industry from early on, and participated in major metal festivals such as "WACKEN OPEN AIR" in Germany. They have already released over 50 songs, all with English lyrics except one. They don't growl, jump, or speak dirty words. A transcendental metal band that sings positive lyrics in elegant costumes.

Nice mention on Galneryus (an all male band that is excellent and Syu/guitarist is world class and wicked). Here these petite models (Miyako/Black heartthrob on the right is the only one over 5') and yet once they put on white dresses and high heels (which they play an entire concert in) they turn into Metal Goddesses. How good id this band, well out of 50+ song since they started in 2017 this one doesn't even sniff the top 10 (that alone should tell you what yo are in for). Asami/vocals is a 4' 10" Napoleon who thunders over the music behind her while being a total stage commander controlling the crowd, the band and keeping the show moving. Haruna/drums at 4' 9" needs a special arrangement on that kit but she plays like this for 2 hours and doesn't break a sweat (also smiles a lot like-she beats those drums like they owe her money). Midori/Blond is the extrovert Flash/Shred machine. If your guitar playing sucks like mine here some real bad news. Midori/Blond dropped out of Pharmacy school and gave up piano at 20 to learn to be a Jedi Master guitarist. Miyako/Black heartthrob is a classical trained pianist (wait till you see her on the keys) who picked up a Dean guitar at 18 and self taught to play like this. The guitars put on a clinic in almost every song and they harmonize like one guitar at speeds that are insane. Power, Speed, Thrash, Rock, Prog, Ballads and classical piano are all in their catalog. Forget genre labels these women can play anything and everything they play is flawless perfection. Love Bites is the furthest thing from KPop! First off, they’re Japanese and next, they are very accomplished musicians, not gimmicky like Kpop. The first guitarist is also a classical pianist and the lead singer used to be a ballerina. So, NO, KPop is not even in the same class as these ladies!
