Smokey had a looong career in music...performing AND writing! He's had hits with the Miracles (of course), the Temptations, Marvin Gaye and the list goes on forever! He was a very important part of the Motown rise as a musical powerhouse! The women especially loved him from the early 60's and even now! The man was a phenom! This song is from 1979. For a "history lesson", you should hear his very early hit, "Shop Around" that was at the start of his career and Motown's success in 1960-1 when he was 20. In those early years, he wrote classic hits for himself and other Motown artists and became Berry Gordy's "right-hand man". The two are still best friends who appear on special shows together to share stories about Motown.

Motown... Us baby boomers were lucky for that era, we were raised on that era, it defined us. Edit: GenX, stop putting words into my mouth, I said what I said and no, relying on your parents for their record collection or their radio isn't the same experience. Especially Motown at it's peak from 1964-1973... Sorry if it upsets you you had to be there, simple as that.

I was reading about Smokey's background and he's like a walking UN. "Robinson's ancestry is also part Nigerian, Scandinavian, Portuguese, and Cherokee." This is besides being part French on his mother's side. He got the name Smokey from his favorite uncle because he loved going to cowboy movies as a kid and his uncle used to call him Smokey Joe. It later got shortened to Smokey. Smokey was one of Motown's top songwriters, writing not only his own hits but also big hits for other artists. He wrote top hits like: My Guy, The Way You Do The Things You Do, My Girl, I'll Be Doggone and Aint That Peculiar. This was his first time meeting Berry Gordy: "In August 1957, Robinson and the Miracles met songwriter Berry Gordy after a failed audition for Brunswick Records. At that time during the audition, Robinson had brought along with him a "Big 10" notebook with 100 songs he wrote while in high school. Gordy was impressed with Robinson's vocals and even more impressed with Robinson's ambitious songwriting."

I saw Smokey Robinson perform in Atlantic City, a dinner theater type show. He sang his hits with the Miracles, his solo hits, and hits he wrote for other artists. For most of the songs he would explain how he came to write it before singing it. At over three hours in I had to leave because my date had to use the bathroom and the rules were if you left the hotel ballroom you couldn't return. That was over a decade ago. For all I know Smokey might still be there singing.

Taking nothing away from the great Smokey Robinson, but there's a good cover of this song with absolutely amazing harmonizing by the real singer between the two who did it. Huey Lewis & Gwynneth Paltrow starred in & did that cover of Cruisin' for the 2000 movie 'Duets' - put it back on the charts again! In fact, Huey Lewis & the News went back and recorded an entire album of oldies from the 50s & 60s; worth checking out.

Smokey released a song (& album) called "Quiet Storm" in 1975. An entire radio program was named after the song, which generally plays R&B ballads/slow jams. Some radio stations still have a Quiet Storm show today. A year or 2 ago, Smokey released a duet with Charlie Wilson (Gap Band) called "All Of My Love".I don't know if he still has the company, but Smokey had some frozen creole dinners in stores years ago. Patti LaBelle, Bobby Brown, & the late Linda McCartney have food products too. Check out these tribute songs: George Harrison - Pure Smokey / ABC - When Smokey Sings

You can't beat Smokey... but you guys love Huey Lewis too, he did a version of this song in the movie Duet. He does a "duet" of this song with Gwyneth Paltrol. You might want to check out the movie too

This song came out much later in his career. I was already a huge Motown fanatic, when I heard this on the radio I went out and bought the single that same day. If honey could sing it would sound like Smokey Robinson. There's a great single called "when Smokey sings" that you guys should definitely check out see how his musical peers think of him

Without looking it up, I believe the band ABC did the song "When Smokey Sings." I wouldn't call them his peers because of the decades between them as well as the fact that Smokey Robinson has few peers at all. One of the best songwriters of all time. In fact, Bob Dylan famously called Smokey Robinson "America's greatest living poet." The highest praise!

There’s yacht rock, but I would argue there’s also yacht soul, of which this is the prime example. Soooooooo good! You can never go wrong with Smokey. Another awesome solo hit of his you should check out is “Being With You”. But like I said, it’s impossible to go wrong with anything Smokey! ❤

This song is smooth and was released in 1979! Smokey Robinson is a legend who still performs! Since his days at Motown where he performed with the Miracles and wrote so many songs for them and other artists at Motown! He is a musical icon!❤❤

Some industry trivia for you.... The song, "Who's Lovin' You", made famous by Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5 in 1969, was originally recorded by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles in 1961. Smokey was initially hesitant to have the then 11 year old Michael singing his song, which was a very adult song. But as soon as he heard Michael singing it with such passion and skill like he was a grown man, he was immediately impressed and was all for the Jackson 5 re-recording his song. By the way, you guys might want to react to Who's Lovin' You by the Jackson 5, amazing song, and cover. When you hear it it reminds you of just how superbad Michael was when he was just a lil' boy. Additionally, a bar from Who's Lovin' You was sung in the beginning of the En Vogue video for their song, "Hold On" (1990), by group member, Terry Ellis. Classic.

One of the smoothest, angelic voices ever. I feel like I am in a dream when I listen to this song, floating along on billowy clouds in the sun with blue skies above. So good!

This reminds me of my old neighborhood, growing up. Summer days on school vacay, playing with your friends. This song wafting in the air in the distance from someone’s car stereo on Summer evenings. Good times, for sure. Miss those days SO much! Years later, I got a chance to meet him and get his autograph. I can tell you, he is as smooth in person as he is on wax. ❤️

This song was Smokey Robinson's first Top 10 r&b crossover hit of the 1980s. The song did peaked at the #4 spot on both the Billboard Hot 100 and the Billboard Soul charts in the early winter of 1980. Some people considered this song a "quiet storm" song of the 1980s as well. A beautiful song indeed!!!

Can't go wrong with Smokey. One of a kind. One of the original Motown artist. He helped get the Temptations going. He and one of his Miracles Ronald White, wrote the Temps hit, "My Girl".

Smokey was the Chief songwriter and producer at Motown. Back in 2000, I was cruising through Temecula, Californa and Smokey was the DJ. Dude was answering phones and rapping like a regular dude on the streets. Very down to earth.

I have ben listening to Smokey Robinson since the 70s, The Miracles and solo, and am a big fan. I remember when I first really listened to the lyrics to this song. Smokey you naughty man. Still a hit in my book though. "Being With You" is one of my favorites. Hope you two do that one and more of his music.

There song “Let Me Be Your Clock” and “Another Fork in the Road” are also great underrated songs by Smokey/Miracles. Let Me Be Your Clock is one of those songs that they used different words to equate to sex to get by the censors but it sounds so sweet because of their word choices. He says in the song, “let me be the pendulum that strikes your chime for the first time.” I like it because it’s not vulgar lyrics and usually Smokey/Miracles are talking about a lifetime love with one woman and not a one night wam bam thank you mam stand even when the lyrics are definitely sexual. ❤

Smokey had the best voice out of Motown, in my opinion. Every song is so good with that voice. I lived 50 miles north of Detroit, Motown was huge in the 60’s & 70’s till it was over, unfortunately. Thank you for playing Smokey, hope to hear more!👍👏👏 💙💖xoxoxo
