I was only 12 in 1968, and my parents dragged us kids to see Funny Girl. We knew Streisand from her tv specials, but didn’t want to hike downtown to see the movie. Well, we almost fell out of our chairs - how could anyone sing and dance like that, and be hysterically funny and heartbreaking at the same time. If anyone wonders why Streisand is a legend, just watch Funny Girl.

Almost ditto to this comment. My dad was a huge Streisand fan, and I got dragged to this movie as well. Tremendously funny (not sure my mother thought it was appropriate), but it certainly established Streisand as a major talent. Years later when I was an adult, also went to see "Yentl" with my dad...

God, the staging of this was beautiful: glamorous, silly, over the top, and still doing story-telling work. This is the kind of thing you probably only could have done in a film. I would imagine reconstructing this scene in the new modern stage musical would be sort of impossible after audiences had already seen a movie version like this.

I was lucky to see her on Broadway, I was only 14 but I understood the implication. My parents took me to see it after much begging, and I was laughing so hard, the Irish Catholic mum sat there straight lipped.

I was also only 12 in 1968 and my friends and I wanted to see Oliver, but, because of a snow storm, we had to go to a theatre closer to home, and Funny Girl was playing there so we had to "settle". I was blown away by Streisand's voice, style and overall talent. I walked out of the theatre as one of her biggest fans since. She's made it easy to be a fan all these years. She's always been an amazing talent and I always looked forward to her work.

Enough time has passed that Ms Streisand is universally recognized as one of the world's greatest singers, perhaps the greatest of the past century. In case anybody has forgotten or never knew, she is also one hilarious comedienne as this scene from Funny Girl attests.

I feel like I'm part of the last generations who get why this is so funny... And that is not a bad thing! When I was was growing up, I was gettiing kinda mixed messages on what was "right" and "proper" and such, since my own parents didn't seem to know where they stood either. And for good reason. Lets just say, they got a very traditional upbringing but came out of the closet later in life. Anyways, this idea that a pregnant bride is a hilarious concept, since brides are "supposed" to be virgins or whatever, is hopefully fading into the pages of history. But Miss Streisand is legend, and let her be praised to the end of time.

@@sothathappened Read between the lines. So-called ‘ethnic’, un-European facial features are becoming less desirable in the west, exacerbated by the popularity of plastic surgery. Beauty standards are arbitrary and utterly ridiculous. Not to mention impossible to follow simply because they are subject to change constantly. It’s a loser’s game.

He loves her enough to woo her, to sway her, to get her to let her guard down, than he marries her. He made his plan known not just to her but to everyone. He did not go about things in the correct want of Family honor. That is how it is sometimes. She loves him, she never noticed anyone else much till him. She never feared competition until she was in this position. Draped in lace, silk, flowers, diamonds carrying the proof of the union love or not. She sees herself the display of everyones work and hopes than it gets overwhelming. Yet the men laugh, forgotten their mothers bodies, and the lust they given many. They left the theater telling their wives and friends that they are not gentlemen. The woman sat still and quiet. Being pregnant is the most feminine time of a woman's existance. Most venerable, heightened feelings, to other women it is supposed to be the most beautiful time of the neighborhoods up coming shared joy. Yet the men laughed. Thats what men think of pregnant women. So Yes, she not fired, Yes, she is not continue with the pillow. There reactions hold a mirror to a truth the audience was not aware of when they walked in. Those that didn't laugh got their hearts broken. This is theater finest.
