In a small woodsy Oregon town, a group of friends - sensitive Gordie (Wil Wheaton), tough guy Chris (River Phoenix), flamboyant Teddy (Corey Feldman), and scaredy-cat Vern (Jerry O'Connell) - are in search of a missing teenager's body. Wanting to be heroes in each other's and their hometown's eyes, they set out on an unforgettable two-day trek that turns into an odyssey of self-discovery. They sneak smokes, tell tall tales, cuss 'cause it's cool and band together when the going gets tough. When they encounter the town's knife-wielding hoods who are also after the body, the boys discover a strength they never knew they had. STAND BY ME is a rare and special film about friendship and the indelible experiences of growing up. Filled with humor and suspense, STAND BY ME is based on the novella 'The Body' by Stephen King.

They're more than just friends, the way Chris cares about Gordie shows that they're practically brothers.

He does the same when Teddy pulls the weird dangerous stunt with the train dodge. Chris knows all about Teddy and his trauma and his issues and basically tells Teddy it’s his responsibility to look after him when Teddy says I don’t need no babysitter. The definition of a true friend and a brother

Although an incredible actor & blessed with a precocity of talent who would have ruled the 90s if he had lived one can clearly discern glimpses of the real River Phoenix in this scene bursting right through, as he was largely drawing from his own mature, insightful & evolved essence for that moment of poignancy, revelation & genuine friendship while walking on the tracks. The acting talent of River Phoenix was amazing, transcendent & mesmerizing, as it ran deep, yet the real, endearing him shined outwards in this clip, granted he was actually acting. Though isn't it true that most great actors draw from aspects of their own character & experiences occasionally? Anyways, RIP River, you were one of the best, & you are legendary.

Chris has a rough family life very dysfunctional and he knows the potential that his friend has and who doesn’t have a bad reputation like he does

@@hippiecheezburger5457 But doesn't Chris realize himself that he's got potential too and he can become much better than his family ? He could gain a good reputation in Castle Rock.

@@childhooddreamer6975 The book gives you a better insight of Chris' mind, and makes you realize that the wake up call here is not just aimed at Gordie only, but also at himself. In the book Gordie explains that he helped Chris get his high school diploma even though at times it looked like a lost cause because years of abuse and being told by everyone that he's worthless had held Chris really far behind. Gordie also explains that even after he made it into college Chris still felt that he didn't belong in there. Not because he lacked the intelligence (he didn't) but because he felt like he was below the other students, most of which came from better off families. Chris is speaking from personal experience when he tells Gordie here that the whole 'writing is stupid' thing is is father talking through his mouth, not him. He knows what's going on.
