I have lived on the Isle of Man all my life and I still manage to appreciate how beautiful it is.

niamh 5013 Out of curiosity, (I know you consider yourself culturally Manx and not any other country, but) if you had to choose between Scotland, Ireland, or England, which one of those would you say your culture is most similar to, or you personally feel the closest to? Also, are your surnames very Gaelic, with parts like “Mac” or “Ó” or “Gilligan” or “Coughlin”?

@JulieWallis19634 жыл бұрын
niamh 5013 but the real question is......have you explored other places? It’s ok to say “my home is beautiful” but it’s not worth Jack if you’ve nothing to compare it too.
@niamh-mi8yc4 жыл бұрын
@@ZhangK71 well I'm partially Irish so that's the one I feel closest to but I think it's like any other Celtic country. I'm actually not sure on the sir names I know ones like Corkhill, Quayle, Quilliam, etc. Are very common here

I’m hoping to revisit your wonderful land in the future to show my wife and children just how great the scenery and the Manx people are. Also experienced the excitement of the TT Races...WOW!

Thank you for posting this video - True to stories I've heard, The Isle of Man is simply breathtaking.. and magical! My grandmother's family (Cubbon) was (maybe still is?) from the Isle of Man, and came to Canada in the late 1800s. I've heard so many stories about this island all my life, and have always been curious as why they emigrated. What a fascinating history this island has. Here is an excerpt from a letter my grandmother wrote (circa 1946) ..."The last we heard of one of mother’s sisters, she was still living in the old Cubbon house on Douglas Head. It is over three-hundred years old and is built of solid stone. There used be be underground tunnels out into the sea, handy for the days when they used to smuggle in the old French wines and brandies, silks, tea and tobacco."

Such a beautiful place full of history and mystery. Thanks so much for taking us along and I would love to see more videos like this! I would really love to know more about the 3 legged symbol and it's origins.
@Lovelygreens6 жыл бұрын
The three legs of man can for sure be traced back to the medieval age. The motto for modern symbol is: 'which everway I am thrown I will stand'. However, there are theories that the modern symbol is related to the Celtic triple spiral -- the triskelion. In the past it could have been that each spiral represented a facet of the mother goddess -- maiden, mother, crone. With the introduction of Christianity it could also be a representation of the holy trinity.
@carmenwhitehead6 жыл бұрын
Very cool, thanks so much for explaining it.
@ArchYeomans6 жыл бұрын
Very interesting. I was reading that the Union Jack was the official flag until 1932 which was adopted in 1801. I wonder what flag was used by IOM before then. I believe the triskelion was inspired by the 45 RPM vinyl record plastic insert. :-)
