This is by far the best video I've watched on how to cut black nails (and I watched a lot of nail cutting videos)! Thank you thank you thank you for the close ups, variety of nails and showing the black dot indicating the quick. I was procrastinating on even buying the "correct" nail clippers as my poor Rottie's nails grew longer and longer. After watching this clip several times, I bit the bullet, went to Petco and bought their store brand clippers. I practiced cutting on sticks from the garden the approx. size of my girl's nails. Once I felt comfortable using the clippers, I let my pup smells the clippers and with lots of treats and baby talk praise I cut one nail! Yay! Now we do one nail a day, very conservative, just the tip but they are looking good. Not going to lie, this is not a favorite activity for my pup, but slow and steady works. Thanks again for a terrific tutorial!

The nails are one thing the dog for me is the main issue. Having the same problem like you, had to cancel appointment cause close for a month. Dog way overdue now "trying" to cut myself. My dog has her own thoughts about the issue. Hides her paws under her head and licks my fingers when I try to get at them. Trust me and that makes it hard

I’m feeling the same way ! My 11 year old mini chiweenie HATES nail trims , but needs them bad . She cries at one groomer even though the lady is super gentle . And she cooperated with her fave groomer . But both closed . She has black nails . And she won’t be still . So trying on my own will be a difficult task. Ima have to try tho cuz her nails are curling to the sides. So nervous 😬

Almost every time I cut my dog's nail was flawless, except for once. My dog always trusted me with touching his paws and didn't mind nail clipping. But when I cut one of his nails, my dog immediately lifted his head up and very lightly bit my hand. I didn't realize it was bleeding, and I panicked and grabbed the styptic powder to stop it. He didn't trust me for a while with his paws but now he does. I'm extra careful now

This was very helpful -- giving names and describing what we should see before going to far and having them bleed. I decided I wanted to go ahead and trim the dogs nails myself because they trust me and I started to notice that the groomers I've been sending them too have been slacking or not caring for my dogs discomfort. Thank you very much for showing different dog sizes and explaining as you go -- by far the best and thorough.

It's also good to learn to see what to do when your dog has anxiety towards getting their nails cut. Thank you so much for demonstrating on one who dislikes this task. I learned a lot I have two huskies and one of them has primarily all black nails. However, the other has all white nails but he has anxiety towards almost everything. The one with black nails isn't too bad towards nail trimming thankfully, mostly I get the anxiety towards cutting her nails lol.

I have a treat that Jake my Shihiz tzu only gets during his nail cutting. He does not like it to well so retraining him. I start slow just playing with his feet while I am brushing his legs, he is okay with that now, so now just touching his nails with the clippers and the pedi paw so baby steps. I am not sure how he act at the groomers will find out Monday. We just adopted him and he is 10.

I’ve got a black lab with thick black nails. Before we moved, he spent a lot of time running around in our driveway with the kids, and his nails kept themselves pretty short. Now we’ve moved to a house with wooden floors, and he doesn’t run around on concrete outside anymore, but his nails are long enough but he slips on the floors. He hates having his nails trimmed, so it’s always a struggle. Thanks for your tips! I think I will be more confident about where the quick is going in.

Excellent video. Really shows how far to go. What I will do is shine a small flashlight behind the nail. It is easy to see where the quick ends. I will mark it then cut. More labor intensive, but it helps a little bit. I have to try your way now. Thanks.

This video helped me so much. Basically just trim a little bit off each time until you see the black dot. Simple. I did end up cutting the quick on one nail a little bit but I don’t even think he noticed honestly. Stopped the bleeding right away with some styptic gel. Thank you for giving me the confidence to do this myself!

This is honestly a gift to dog owners. I have had multiple vets and vet technicians trim my dog's nails and none have taken the time to watch for the black dot (the quick). Sure it takes some time, but I can say a spoon full of peanut butter on a spoon handing out of my mouth while I trim puts my dog into a state of focus that even the anti-meds don't even come close to--all they did was make the dogs very sleepy in the midst of high anxiety over the nail trim--adding more torture in fact! Thanks so much for sharing your expertise. Nail trimming is not a fight or anxiety producing for me and my current black-nailed dog. 🙏

Oh my, thank you so much! I have wanted know how to cut solid black nails for so long! I have two dogs and neither of them like getting their nails clipped! My Havanese has a mix of transparent/pink nails and black nails, but my schnauzer has thick black nails. Since they get nervous, they make ME nervous, which is why I guess I don't do it. I was cutting little by little but leaving them too long because I couldn't tell where the quick was. I feel like I know what to look for now. (Cutting my cats nails are easier - transparent and pink!) Thanks again!

I have a brown standard poodle with thick, black nails who is VERY fussy and uncooperative about having a manicure. Yours is the best training I've found on trimming black nails. The part about spotting the quick as a black dot at the end of the nail was especially helpful. I'll be trying this out on my doggie this afternoon. Thank you!
