The STORY OF LOVERS ROCK is a feature length documentary tells the story of an era and a music that defined a generation in the late 70s and 80s. Lovers Rock is romantic reggae that was uniquely British. It developed from a small UK scene to become a global brand through the likes of UB40 and Maxi Priest
Lovers Rock was particularly influential to a new generation of black British young women and men who identified with this music that reflected their experiences. Female artists like Louisa Marks, Janet Kay, Brown Sugar, Carroll Thompson led a 'girl power explosion in it's early phase.
The music provided a coping mechanism against a backdrop of racial tension and riots across the UK as well as being a counterpoint to the male dominated 'roots' scene.
The film combines live performances with some of the Kings and Queens of Lovers Rock with comedy sketches, interviews and archive material.
Interviews include Denis Bovell, UB40, Levi Roots Linton Kwesi Johnson, Angie La Ma, Maxi Priest, Mykaell Riley, The comedy sketches are provided by the likes of Eddie Nestor, Robbie G, Wayne Rollins, Glenda Jaxson. Rudi Lickwood, John Simmit., Annette Fagon.

Good to see that a movie has been made about this British music genre that made a serious impact on the lives of many reggae partygoers back in the 70s and 80s.

Let me tell you my story in growing up in the 70's listening to Lovers rock. It all started when I met a west Indian girl from school, we became best friends till I was 19 then lost touch. I had grew up with her and her family. We both went to the blues and she introduce to me lovers rock music. Since then I was hooked on it. Thank you Jean for the memories of our teens.

...A quality which is defined by your own standard. "There are plenty of artists today who are continuing the spirit of reggae with great music..." I believe I said this too, earlier. I'm not confused. Your perception ignoring my reassurance that its not condescending. You are correct in stating that about tone. I stand corrected.

@mbproject21 When I saw this film I was in shock! some footage from our Loves Rock Gala Awards DVD was in it with our name rubbed out . Some of the concert footage was also in it and interviews. The footage was on the tapes that belonged to Castro Brown and were used without permission, Tapes which he was still waiting on. If Shabazz had worked with Castro Brown or Lloydie Coxsone this could have been the full lovers rock story.

Some footage has been stolen without consent and used in this film. THE STORY OF LOVERS ROCK was and is CASTRO BROWNS idea. Castro paid him over £5.000 to film his show and Shabaz ran off with the footage. It took over a year to track him down to get it back. He's still got all our interview tapes and copied some of our concert tapes. He has not mentioned a lot of artists because he don't know of them simple. He has never put on a show never produced a record and never been in a dance yet KMRT

"I just know good music when I hear it." Is quite an elitist or egocentric statement. Wouldn't you say so? You seem like you might be somewhat intelligent. Figure it out. I never once claimed that she was good but at least she attempts to bring some form of reggae music to the masses of those willing to hear. Her presence in the scene also continues to integrate and forward a musical bond regardless of race. My reply was "an attempt to civilize." As the character Will Macavoy might say haha.

Well, I am a fan of more than one genre of music and you only assume that I am subject to one taste. I never said she was good and there are many more artists who do deserve better credit. I'm a musician has been playing for more than ten years. I've heard a lot. And if you were not an imbecile as well you would research into my profile and see my videos and likes as I have done for you. You might realize that we have similar taste - with the exception of that new dancehall and rap.

If you find it insulting while I'm telling you that its not my intention then you shouldn't hold your opinion in such high regard. Take that as you must. Reggae is only popular underground. I'd like it to become a little more popular. Did she do that? How do you know? I thought she said she was raised around the music. I understand that you think her music is a faux, over processed cliche. I understand why you say so, because I play music; I agree. But it is still worthy of entitlement.

That, is tired ass music that never has anything new to say -- which is not to say music should be limited to lyrics anyhow. If you'd like to demean me and reduce my intelligence based on your uneducated opinion of me, from a small comment on youtube, then please continue to contribute to the proliferate deterioration of intelligence via mass media kitsch, social networking, and fallacious fables which are becoming reality.

You do seem like you might be somewhat intelligent. How is that insulting? I'm somewhat intelligent too, as are a lot more people. You called me an imbecile and that is far more insulting. Admit that at least. I apologize if you are insulted by my objective statement. I agree with you on that last sentence, but its still reggae. I'm in a reggae band and I like knowing that its becoming popular again as its good for my scene. How is it not reggae?! It has every essential piece to be reggae.

I'm not MAKING it about color. I'm supporting my argument. MUSIC WILL BE MUSIC. Every form of art is a bastardized version of itself. Nothing can be or will be original in the art world anymore. Just accept it. How can a condescending tone be derived solely from a text? Did I not agree with you about her music not being great? Why do you continue? I just want you to stop being so damn irreverent and be a little more patient in a debate. Its pointless, fun, and exercising in the end anyhow.
