@Esperanza243 It's Christian/Biblical imagery: a rock (or a mountain) is used all through the Bible as symbolism for reliability, strength and safety. So this is a mother's love that reflects those things. Plus 'like a Rock of Ages' refers to an old hymn where God is described as 'Rock of Ages cleft for me - let me hide myself in Thee'. So this mother loves with a love as strong and unchanging as God's. Okay, Bible Study over, please go on with your life ...

This reminds me of when my son (born in 1970) came to me when Paul Simon's song "Loves me like a rock" came on the radio. He was just 3 and started sing it to me. Oh, my mama loves me, she loves me She get down on her knees and hug me Like she loves me like a rock

The backing vocalists on the record were the Oak Ridge Boys. They also sang backing vocals on Slip Sliding Away.
@crystalp7242 Жыл бұрын
The backing vocalists on the studio version of “Loves Me Like a Rock” are actually The Dixie Hummingbirds, a gospel group that has existed in various lineups dating all the way back to 1928. You are correct, though, in that the Oak Ridge Boys sang backup on “Slip Slidin’ Away”.

Closed enough...looking for Paul's SNL performance which was probably two years after this clip. Dick left ABC in fall of 73 and Paul did second show of SNL in 1975. Dick did return briefly on CBS in 76. Then in 77 moved to PBS where he stayed till 1988. Then was on CNBC till 1996. So this clip could also be from CBS or PBS but both versions were 30 minute shows.

From Gods Word the Bible: John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.

Too fast. Why would he do this?
@DrLumpy3 жыл бұрын
I agree, it's too fast. He even stumbles over some of it in the first chorus. Loses the bounce, sounds like a punk polka. The answer as to "why" is nearly always that they fit it into the limited programming time slot for the TV show. Dick Cavett tended to be more interview/talk/political, not "Entertainer does his act" focused like Johnny. Song too long and the demographics begin to lose interest. Time is money in TV, like everything else. I'm guessing that Dick interviewed Paul before and/or after the performance. That's typically Mr Cavett's focus. It is really odd performing on a talk show. I played in many of the bands in the talk shows of the 60s and 70s. The audience is tiny, much smaller than it seems on TV. They're typically on the edge of bored. The constant stop/start/re-do/applaude NOW etc. quickly lets the audience know they're not at a concert. Technical people seem to outnumber the audience, cameras and lights and people are moving around all over the stage while the artists tries to appear into the lyrics. When finished, the APPLAUSE sign lights up, they shake hands and go to commercial. All within a couple of milliseconds of where the script told them they should be.

Ioupi4bama- I saw that your comment is 12 years old. I just discovered Jessy Dixon recently, and find his singing and performing to be fascinating. I wrote my comment for others ,who like me ,were not familiar with, or knew of Jessy until now. I watched the videos for weeks not knowing that he had transitioned. I finally decided to do research and discovered that he had been dead for over ten years. Hopefully these videos will keep inspiring people in the future. I wish that I had known of Jessy when he was alive. I would have made great effort to attend some of his performances.
