I used to cake on THICK HEAVY MATTE foundation because that’s all I ever saw influencers doing. I thought that more coverage = better. The best thing I’ve ever done for my makeup routine is switch to a light coverage skin tint and spot conceal.

Me too!! Just bought the neutragena (Sp?) hydrating one I think it is called (I found it on Shelby’s video) and I’m obsessed!!! I’m 38 and super dry and I was trying to make full cover, even medium coverage foundations work on me but they exaggerate everything texture wise and look heavy. I have pretty skin and it finally dawned on me that i don’t need to cover it! I’m so happy I found her videos!

I am a medium to heavy texture kind of girl but I also need hydration. I don’t have acne scarring but I do have rosacea and that does require some pigment to cover it up. I found Tarte Foundcealer and it’s Creaseless Concealer to be really good for me. You’ll find that you use less foundation if you apply it with a brush otherwise the sponge kind of sucks it up. One thing about the Christmas concealer is that you use very little of it. It’s very pigmented and gives a radiant finish under the eyes which is where I use it because it has murmuru oil in it.

I like primer more than setting spray. Tbh I've noticed zero difference using setting spray or not. I've tried several. I guess maybe if it was misting or something out, maybe thered be some more protection from environmental elements??? But as far as making it last on my face it does nothing for me...primer can help a bit.

After many trials and errors/fails I’ve finally found the right basics of my makeup, the right foundation, concealer, contour, blush, powder, and brows, all working together flawlessly. The other frustrating issue I was having was staying power and I’ve resolved that too by taking an extra step after using my setting spray, I lightly go over with my sponge then using a brush add another light dusting of finishing powder on my entire face including eyeshadow, brows and contour/blush. It really locks everything in place extremely well without any touch ups after 7 hours at work. I’m so thrilled! Now I want to explore and have some fun with eyeshadows (gel and powder) for some fun new looks for the summer. I’m starting my own trend with some blue shadows as I’m tired of seeing so many mauves and peachy warm color combinations that I just can’t seem to get on board with. Anyway, I hope this will help someone else have success. P. S. I absolutely love your channel Shelbey, you’re articulate and such a genuine sweet soul! 💖✨

I never liked how foundation looked on my combo/oily skin until I discovered wet n' wild cushion foundation and then tried L'Oreal True Match original which is now my favorite. Natural finish foundations look best on me and I used to always choose matte until I realized it. Also I always use a buffing or flat top brush, the thicker the formula, the denser the brush I need. For the two I mentioned I use a very non dense flat top brush and it works great. I've also used Kosas tinted face oil with the same brush.

Love that the first 2 you mentioned are my 2 go-to’s!! Wet and Wild cushion and MAC F&B. I’ve tried tons, from high $$$ to low $, and these are so great for mature/dry skin. The W&W cushion is better than high end and a quick, fast option for day. I kind of stipple it on w/the IT cosmetics heavenly lux brush, then a little buffing. Very quick. MAC F&B perfect for all other times.. especially when you get the hang of how it morphs when applied with hands. For a little more coverage but still a lovely thin texture, Tom Ford stick lightly stippled on. Only took me 62 yrs to find what works ! Thank you for all of your tips. You’re a delight.

I’ve been a bare minerals powder foundation fan for over 15 years. At some point I stopped using it and tried liquid, it just doesn’t give the same easy flawless finish. Last year I went back to bare minerals; i had to change my usual color since my skin has lightened from using sunscreen more regularly, but it still had the same gorgeous finish I loved . I just want light coverage and evening out my skin tone, and it’s perfect for that. I use the BM powder concealer as well. Basically I’m still doing my base makeup the same way as 15 years ago and it still looks so pretty.

One factor that is really critical for me but not always emphasized in videos about choosing foundations is climate. Many people live in areas with lots of humidity during the warm months, so even if they have dry skin, like I do, they pick foundations that factor in that humidity. I live in an arid climate, and many products designed for dry skin don’t consider how this hot, dry climate sucks everything off or into your skin within a couple of hours. I love the water-based foundations, but I have had to figure out ways of hydrating and adding moisture to my skin several times a day to look ok. I loved the categorization of foundation types in relation to skin types! Thanks for sharing your perspective.

Thank you for making such practically helpful videos! I always laugh when I see people talk about how a foundation isn’t very good because it’s clinging to dry patches and looking dry... many whom do not even moisturize well! ANY makeup complexion product will not conceal or fix skin texture issues particular to roughness or dryness. I have both rosacea and hyperpigmentation, to be honest when I was young I didn't protect my skin, I only started doing that later in life (when I was about 25). I use Estee Lauder Double wear, because I work long days at the office and other foundations didn't stay on for so long, after a couple of hours they'd just melt off. The only problem I have with the double wear is that it makes me look so dry. It was worse when my work-mate pointed it out, I was like: others notice it too? And I do use very good products, I've got this whole line from Paula's Choice. The ironic thing is that the person who said this to me, is 10 years older than me (I'm 43, she's well in her 50s) she's got an amazing skin. I asked her what her secret is, and she said nothing. She does absolutely nothing. In fact she told me she washes her face with hand soap. Besides she's a heavy smoker, and I've never smoked anything in my entire life. I was like, I can't believe she's got this perfect skin. Lol

Thank you so much for making this video. I bought bare minerals barepro foundation and hated how it looked so much. I was going to throw out the whole thing until I saw your video and finally realized I had been applying it all wrong which was why it was coming out so streaky and cakey. I finally applied it with the pressing method and it looks amazing!

Great video! I’m 49 with normal to medium skin, but I have texture on my chin and pores on my nose from having combination skin when I was younger. I also have a few lines creeping in. I have good skin days, and some bad. The most difficult foundation to work with is stick foundation. I love the convenience, but I haven’t found one that works. The best one so far is the Westman Atelier, but I won’t buy it again. I love the BareMinerals complexion rescue for light coverage during the day. I use the Ilia true serum foundation which is lovely, and I’ve just order the Osmosis satin foundation after seeing rave reviews by You Tubers I follow. I also use the Osmosis powder foundation compact which I like. Prepping the skin right can make all the difference. 🥰

Thank you for your thoughtful research. Because of you, I tried the original loose Bare Minerals yesterday - and it looked pretty good! I'm 57 and had stopped using all powder on my face, but it's so hot and humid here.... anyway - Thanks Again!

Sunscreen layer question for mature, dry skin. We need more moisturizing than good sunscreens provide, and then lay fdn over that. How do we increase the probability of success? ENJOYED!

6 # Use a CC cream with SPF such as that made by IT Cosmetics. It’s quite moisturizing and gives great coverage along with sun protection.

Thanks. Have tried that. Problem is I prefer more sunscreen than in cc creams (IT didn't do enough bc I live in Hawaii) and need more moisture too. Feel like a coconut after a few hours, except coconuts 🥥 are hairy!

Hado Labo spf 50 +++++ gel. This can be found on Amazon, I think it comes from Korea. This gel fills in the groves of you skin and fills fantastic on the skin. Skin fills smooth. If this isn't enough purchase Hado Labo premium hyalaronic acid . This liquid has urea in it and is very moisturizing, some people complain that it gave them white heads in the comment section on Amazon. I haven't had this problem I'm 54 years old. You always put a moisturizer on top of hyalaronic acid to seal the acid so it doesn't evaporate off of the skin pulling water out of your skin. Also it's best to put hyalaronic acid on damp skin trapping the water for the skin to absorb.

I have combo skin with visible pores in my t-zone. Primer is a must for me and I’ve found a few that really do improve the appearance of my skin. The foundation that I feel looks best on me is the Lancôme Skin Feels Good applied with my IT Love is the Foundation brush. I love how it looks but I do wish I could find something a little more long wearing. I do occasionally mix in a tiny amount of thicker foundation like Tarte Amazonian Clay and it helps a little.

Everybody should watch this video!!!! Many times customers don't get the results they expect from a foundation and it's because it either has been marketed in a way that makes it look like it transforms skin even if it doesn't (the airbrushed pictures case) . Also, I think we as beauty video viewers forget that there IS makeup technique and there are tools to do makeup that give us the desired result. So many times KZbinrs, in order to not offend anyone or get some sort of backlash say "you do your makeup however you want if that works for you". Sure, we can do our makeup however we want BUT why not open up to learning ways of making it work. I believe that there are many good products out there that get terrible reviews because of users' lack of technique or the right aplication tools. And we shouldn't be makeup artists in order to buy or apply makeup, but just as we would look up a recipe when wanting to make a particular dish, we can look up techniques to do our makeup just right. Bye :)

I didn't know all that, important content! Thank you. I am now inspired to drag out my Too Faced Cocoa Powder powder foundation. I am going ti buff with a brush instead of using the floofie!! Lol. Okay not my tip...Wayne Goss's tip. First blend liquid onto your hand. Then pick up with buffing/stippling brush a LITTLE atca time and then apply blending it a section at a time. This also gives a great finish, no streaks. Part or most of the reason brushes streak is there is way too much foundation. Thank you Shelby 😘

Shelby. I have never posted on your channel but I’ve been seeing you videos of foundations application. I’m putting some of your advice and I have enjoyed it a lot. I bought the bare minerals liquid foundation and I have not been disappointed. I do have to follow your recommendations of skin prep but my skin looks wonderful all day with very little oil coming through. I don’t think I need something full full coverage but I enjoyed it I think I can apply it very sheer when I apply it with my fingers. It works best for me that way. Thank you. 😊😊😊

Simply amazing as always!! I can't stress enough how helpful a true... And because I'm aging, it's helpful to know the foundation I once loved no longer looks good on me. The foundation hasn't changed, my skin has. I'm going to try a couple that you suggest.

Great video! My skin gets dry but also a little oily throughout the day on my t-zone, however I still can’t use a matte foundation in that area because it will initially look dry and cake up. Nars sheer glow is my current favorite! I need coverage but I find using that foundation gives me a great base without looking too heavy and then I go in with a full coverage concealer where I need it. I’m still on the hunt for a great setting/touch up powder for my t-zone that will look smooth.

I'm dry AF! I'm 43, but don't have super mature looking skin. I love the Fit Me! dewy + smooth, the Neutrogena Healthy foundation, and Avon Flawless. The L'oreal pro glow is ok, but not my fav. I also like the CG smoothers mixed with the Dollar Tree Sassy Chic for some strange reason. It looks super glowy. I also mix my primer with my moisturizer most days. Mainly because I'm a lazy bum...lol.. I do the St. Ive's collegen in the tub, or original pink Oil of Olay with the Hard Candy moisturizing glow primer. My favorite application method us a sponge or my fingers.

Very helpful information! I definitely agree that there's a powder foundation for every skin type. I've always had dry skin, and now I have lines too, and I still use loose powder foundation every day. I find liquids and creams don't work well for me, even though they are usually suggested for dryer skin types.

Shelbey, this was so helpful. It would be great if you could comment or do a video on matching primers to foundation. I have read that you want to avoid applying water based foundation on silicone primer so you need to use a water based primer with water based foundation to get a good application. How do you know which primers are water based and which foundations are water based? Is this really true?

I found this video super helpful, thank you so much! I am finding it hard though to pick the best primer for my skin. I have enlarged pores but I'm also oily, so I'm always back and forth with pore filling primers and matte primers. I can't seem to find that perfect balance. I'm also struggling with separation in the creases of my nose and I can't figure out what I'm doing to encourage that separation. I use powder and a setting spray. Btw, I'm newer to your channel and I've found your videos just so intriguing and educational at the same time. Thank you so much!

Thanks for this informative video! It was helpful for sure. I do have a combo skin. In summer I do still get quite oily, but other than that my skin is pretty normal and during the coldest months it gets pretty dry (I live in Finland so the climate is pretty hard to my skin in winter months). My favorite foundation is the Catrice HD Foundation. I think it provides good coverage and stays on very well, but doesn't look cakey. I do always apply it with a sponge! I still think I'm going to try something little bit more lightweight and dewy next winter.
