Boating Travel Update for June 2024 - Slow Start to the Summer

This video updates what we have been up to since we launched Vestri earlier this month. Unfortunately, we both came down with Covid, which has limited our travels. We have hung out in anchorages, Gorge Harbour, Cortes Island, Drew Harbour, and Quadra Island, taking things easy. Now that the sickness has passed, we are waiting for the cool weather to warm up so we can head northward, hoping to get to the Broughton Archipelago. Stay tuned..

Hi Ray, sorry to hear that you two came down with covid. I hope you bounce back soon. We live in the San Fernando Valley in Southern California. It has been hovering near 100 degrees of late. Fortunately, we had planned a trip to San Diego this week and are enjoying amazing 75 degree weather, and the best fish tacos around. I hope you get some great weather and get your strength back. Glad you aren't having bad storms. Here in Texas, it has been rain with bad wind and hail. We had a tornado come through and do severe damage.

If off grid AC running is important to you my advice is to get at least a 2200 watt gas generator and then if you can install a soft starter on the AC

When you are anchored out in the water like this, do you have to pay moorage fees to a harbormaster or anything? Or do you only pay when you stay in a rental slip at an actual marina? Thanks for the videos. I've always liked the idea of living aboard a boat.

For the most part no charges to anchor. Some places even have free stern tie rings on shore to aid. Some places are restricted though for environmental or industry reasons or have time limits but for the most part there are scads of free anchorages, most not very crowded. With so many islands and inlets on the BC coast there are lots of bays and coves to choose from. :) In some marine parks they have designated mooring buoys that they charge a fee to tie to, usually around $10-15 bucks a night. Much like RV Parks, marinas are getting really expensive now around $70-80 a night or more. But some will let you ties up for a few hours for free to go ashore and get supplies etc. or have cheaper rate docks with no power. Cheers, Ray

How many watts generator you have for running your generator an AC Jim from P.E.I.

Not exactly sure what you are asking. Our boat doesn't have any air conditioner, not really needed on the west coast. I do have a 2000W gas generator on board I use as a last resort for battery charging in case we get too many cloudy days that reduce solar harvest too much.

Because of the La Nina pattern that has developed, you are going to experience a cool, wet summer this year. We are experiencing a very hot season in the US southeast. Temps nearing triple digits for several days in a row. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but only God has control of the weather, not man.

So far the July forecast is looking pretty much ideal up there www.accuweather.com/en/ca/campbell-river/v9w/july-weather/52857?year=2024 Lots of high 70s low, 80s and sunny days In a way its good we are getting this coolness and rain to start to help lessen forest fires this summer season. June is often cool and wet, locals call it Junuary. :) Cheers, Ray
