The LS head swap on the Ford 300 is a very cool mod you can do to this thing! There are a couple guys on yt doing this mod, one guy got his running. 5.3L/4.8L heads would work the best because of the slight offset the chambers will end up being. Because those heads are setup for a smaller bore means the offset difference doesn't shroud the valves as bad as it can with the larger bore LS engine heads. You'll probably get tens of thousands of views if you do this swap, people love the weird engine build stuff. If you're interested I tinkered with the cut and weld heads together idea before and asked some questions from the guys doing this swap enough so that I could do it myself if I didn't break my back about a year ago. Like I mentioned, I'm a machinist by trade so figuring out this kind of stuff is on the easier side for me. The hardest part to do this will be knowing someone that can weld the heads together for you after one cylinder is removed from each head. Can't wait to see what you come up with?
@freedomworx Жыл бұрын
I have actually considered doing that. I need to look more into it 👍😎
@itseithergonnaworkoritaint7852 Жыл бұрын
@@freedomworx Sweet! Here's what you do to get the 2 sections to line up with minimal welding is to center number 2 and number 5 cylinders with each 3 cylinder section. This will get everything close enough for the small bore heads to work well with the 4" bore 300 vs the 3.779" 5.3L/4.8L bore size. So when you saw one cylinder off of the opposite sides of each head to make one, leave a little extra to fill in the void you'll have to get the 2 sections to meet in the center of the block The bore spacing for the LS is 4.400" vs 4.480" for the Ford 300's bore spacing. So when you center #2 the two cylinders next to it will be .080" off and another .040" off to the center of the block. Working out from the center of the block the 4.400" B/S will be off .040" each way to the centerline of the 2 cylinders in the middle. So where each head is cut you'll need an extra .120" per head so the 2 sections will meet in the middle. So you don't have to run coolant tubes like the one guy did, you can open the head bolt holes up on location so you can weld tubing in so that seam can get sealed. Open the holes up at least 3/8" bigger so the sleeves will have a .187" wall thickness. Of coarse you'll need to do some fab work as well for the intake and exhaust. If you are considering FI look at the Vortec 4200 maybe that intake can be adapted? Not sure what the port layout is on the intake though? But the FI confuser and other components might be able to adapt to it? Or you can make a carb intake for it out of steel if you wanted to? 2 passenger side LS headers with one pipe removed could work? One that is a long tube and the other as a medium length tube header might work out so they don't interfere with each other? Or maybe 2 shorty headers altered to fit? Can't wait to see this series if you go this way?

@@itseithergonnaworkoritaint7852 what about using 6.0L heads? I have a spare set of those and they are 4” bore 🤷🏻♂️
@itseithergonnaworkoritaint7852 Жыл бұрын
@@freedomworx Well if the valves are spread out more than the small bore heads/smaller valves vs larger valves you could run into valve shrouding or even some valves crashing into the cylinder walls? There will be a whole .080" of misalignment going on with this swap for cylinders 1, 3, 4 and 6 so keep that in mind. You can measure the distance from valve to valve but keep in mind that the valves may not be in the center of the cylinder so that will bring the valves even closer to the cylinder walls. The cylinders that move the intake valves closer to the cylinder wall will be more at risk of interference too? Unless the valves are moved over towards the exhaust side to compensate for larger valves? I haven't played with much LS stuff yet, I would of by now if I didn't get hurt. So basically do a bunch of measuring before cutting the 6.0L heads to end up finding out they won't work?(if they won't?) Are those the rectangle port heads that flow around 300 intake CFM? Heck yeah, if those will work they have the potential to feed 450 HP for the 6 cylinders it has if the rest of it is setup to make that number? ] Check for potential intake valve shrouding as well because that will effect the A/F ratio in those cylinders which will give you leaner cylinders than others that could lead to tuning nightmares? Because of the .080" mismatch is why I mentioned the small bore heads. Unless you want to cut the heads so you have 6 sections to weld and center them where they should be? A lot more work but way better results if you did it this way? Junkyard 4.8L/5.3L heads shouldn't be to expensive I wouldn't think anyway?

Time for the 1970 BBC to go into retirement. My eye now is on the GM 4.2 liter I6 Vortec. Looking for engine from '06 or '07. 291 HP with no mods.
