I have 1998 1500 sport with the magnum 360. Bought it new in 98 with 60ish miles on it. Still running at 208k miles. Original engine and Trans. I've only had to replace a couple alternators, radiators, one water pump, 4 tune ups, and rebuilt the rear axle once and a muffler. It has been a very faithful truck.

Richard your videos have more good info than 99% of the drama crap on TV. Anyone can learn a lot from your advise and testing. Worked at a great performance machine shop 40 yrs ago, still very good friends with the owner, learned the difference between BS and results. Love your videos and I haven't bought a Hot rod in almost 40yrs!

The plate on the bottom of the beer keg manifold is notorious for blowing the gasket and creating a dead hole by sucking oil up into the intake and going into the intake ports making an oily looking plug. Easiest way to check is hold the butterflies open on the throttle body and shine a flashlight in. I've got many of the magnum engines that people thought need rebuilt that are perfectly fine. The new gasket kits have shorter bolts for the plate to stop this issue.

you can also put your hand over the oil fill hole with it running. it will have a ton of vacuum in the crankcase when those gaskets fail.

I’ll be watching! Decent stock numbers, but not too surprising. As a Ford guy, I can say I dig those late model Magnum heads…if I remember correctly, I think they have 8mm valve stems and an exhaust valve in the neighborhood of 1.625”- probably why they sounded so good in trucks with a cat back exhaust. I’m curious to see if the longtube headers can bring peak power over 300. I helped a kid install longtubes on his ‘95 Ram, then I fab’ed up a full 2.5” true dual exhaust with Flowmaster Super-10 mufflers…that thing was L-O-U-D. I also milled, radiused, ported and polished his throttle body. The kid used to “goose” the throttle all the time to get it up on the converter and it would bark, I could hear him leave the shop and continue to hear him (from inside my apt!) all the way to his neighborhood! It was about a 5-6 mile trip and my apartment at the time was about a third of the way through his commute. We had planned to install a small cam with a tight LSA and take 2” of runner length from the intake but he ran out of cash and I got married and moved away. Such is life, I’d like to play with one of those again.

For some reason my 97 Dakota is very picky with injectors. I had a misfire on cylinder 2 and diagnosed it as an injector. I used 3 different aftermarket injectors from AutoZone and O'Reilly's and the misfire persisted. I was stumped for a while. Thought I might have misdiagnosed it and went through the steps again. Sure enough, I had it right the first time. I moved the brand-new aftermarket injector to another cylinder and the misfire followed. I measured the resistance of the aftermarket injector and compared it to a good OEM one from another cylinder and the aftermarket injector was at 14 or 15 ohms if I remember correctly and the OEM was 8 or 9 ohms so that was the problem. I finally broke down and paid the extra $60 dollars for an OEM Mopar injector and the problem went away.

As a magnum owner I can tell you that those Chrysler EV1 injectors that came on those engines are complete garbage and simply replacing them with anything EV6 or newer even if they are under rated for that engine will greatly improve things. An injector swap from those to underrated 17# Bosch EV6 injectors from a cheap mustang in the junk yard took my vehicle from no engine breaking in 4 low to tank engine braking. I went from riding my brakes down hill to riding my engine down hill.

@@richardholdener1727 My guess is that the stock injectors were just complete garbage at atomizing the fuel as in I went from 17 mpg to 25 mpg after the swap. So I must have went from not making power to actually making power. I went from 15 mpg to 17 mpg by changing the spark plugs and installing an MSD ignition coil before the injector swap.

Rich, do you think that factory beer keg manifold could be modified to accept a 4 bl (aftermarket) throttle body? Is there one available that doesn't have injectors in it, as the Sniper, FiTech, et al TBIs have? And would it make a difference? Better yet, could you put a 4 barrel CARB on the beer keg, and ditch the EFI altogether?

@@Welcometofacsistube I'm an old Mopar guy but yes there truly are better profiles nowadays, cam manufacturers are building cams based on the .904 lifter which means it's not just another Chevy grind one-size-fits-all. The 474 cam doesn't produce enough torque down low for a pickup truck I believe that cam is around 230 degrees at .050, I would look for a cam that was 220 to 225 degrees duration at .050 on a 110 LC

I'd almost expected it to drop off more with a dead hole than it did: if it was 278 with that timing and 245 with the dead hole, that's almost exactly 7/8. I figured there'd be more downside of not getting anything from one hole.

I bet it'll be close to 100hp with the right cam swap. The only things in you combination that will be negatively affecting getting 100hp from a cam swap will be your small port manifolds and the factory 8:1 compression ratio. Too big of cam with stock compression you'll loose power, too small you won't make enough.

@@frigglebiscuit7484 the 318 magnum had flat top pistons which gave 9:1 compression, the 360 magnums used dished pistons and are 8:1. It specifies 8:1 in my 2003 factory service manual and in my 1993 factory service manual so it never changed throughout production.
