Great objective vibe you brought! Never seen you and now subbed! I had a bout with low libido a few months ago and want to share my story and thoughts. Been doing low carb, keto sometimes dirty keto for 2.5 years. I also consistently IF basically from 930ish pm(my nightly whey protein shake mixed with a few nuts and about 1/2 cup of breyers low carb ice cream. Gotta have my chocolate fix!) till between 12-3 when I break my fast alternating days with 3 strips of bacon and 4 pasture raised eggs with avacados and the next day a can of sardines, and mixed nuts of cashews, macademia nuts, pistachios, pecans, and walnuts. The evening meal between 6-8 is usually something like salmon, steak, hamburger, pork chops, chicken with cruciferous veggies: broccolli, Cauliflower or asparagus baked in olive oil and spice. I also do some HIIT workouts 2-3x/wk with pushups, pullups, dips, dumbell benches and overhead presses. So my T levels felt great(along with my libido) for awhile on my diet/exercise regiment and then i increased my intensity and increased my fasting length and noticed my libido dropped. I was hell bent on finding out WTF was wrong and found some some threads online of men in similar situations and also saw some research about your SHBG(sex hormone binding globulin) increasing with low carb/IF/intense exercise. I started taking boron and Tongkat(supposed to act as aromatose inhibiter freeing up more T that SHBG won't bind to). I went and had my T tested before taking the tongkat and it tested 790 with freet T of 16. I'm 57. I'm currently stacking 1/2 tspn of argenine and 1/4 tspn tongkat(bulk supplement brand) and my libido is back like a 30 year old and I feel like a million bucks! I continue to tweak my diet/exercise and overall wellness regiment always looking for optimal health but not being a perfectionist. I was a high school health teacher for 30 years(not that it matters...). I have added a few more carbs especially on workout days. The benefits of fasting and lower carbs especially the simple carbs has made a world of difference to me besides just losing fat weight. I have so much more energy, clear headedness, mood stability, much lower inflammation, better skin, no more athlete's foot or toenail fungus. I'll never go back to the SAD diet(standard American Diet) I still have cheat meals of pizza etc and drink some beer here and there, but my body will transition back to ketone burning quick with a good fast/low carb menu the next day. It does take your mitchondria a good 3-4 months to change(I did disagree with your one statement saying that you didn't think it took that long). I tell people who want to change to low carb/keto that you must be super strict for the first 6 months and then, as long as you exercise, that you can cheto on keto! Hope this helps someone.

Hello Charles, I went through the exact scenario too. I was low/zero carb, high fat with some intermittent fasting thrown in, and was feeling amazing (strong, lean). Then I crashed and had symptoms of low t (weak, irritated, lack of libido, brain fog etc) my total T was above average, but free t was in the gutter due to elevated SHBG, I've added more carbs and cut my fasting down, and all symptoms have subsided. Feeling good, I'd say my carbs are moderate now, I'm 44 years old. Thanks Paul

Appreciate the information and non biased approach to this. I think some of us get introduced to nutritional information through starting a low carb diet or keto diet because it’s so popular. The more I learn about nutrition the more I want to learn. I’ve maintained my goal weight for about 10 months and now I want to add some muscle. At 57 years old my goals are simply to be healthy and not become frail.

Dr. Layne, first of all, I would like to thank you for your work. By just watching your content on KZbin, I could significantly improve my diet, which indeed used not to be so bad, but it tended toward extremes time and again, either by consuming many calories or by restricting a lot of them. Now I feel more in control and a lot more free, for I can track the calories and, more importantly, the proteins in my diet. I think I was starving for the lack of protein. God bless you.

A point to take into consideration is the metabolic type, which Dr William D. Kelley promoted 60 years ago. He saw people as having three ways they preferred to digest their food, and according to which of those three (meat-based, plant-based or mixed) you belonged to, eat accordingly.

One of the few channels with great, accurate information and im actually getting smarter watching! I tried dozens of diets trying to find some advantage with manipulation of macros or caloric intake variations and in the end a balanced diet, mostly even split of macros (in calories) is easiest for me to adhere to. When i neglect one, thats when the cravings start lol. Great explanation Layne!

I been doing keto. Pros, fat loss, I can eat whatever whenever and I’m ripped right now and I don’t feel terrible unlike when I used to cut for the summer when I used to body build. Cons Insomnia, I smell worse, constipation, and I’m pretty asexual. I’m gonna add in some carbs because I was so busy with losing fat that I realized I haven’t had a hard one for longer than a few seconds before I get distracted. Gonna check my T levels soon before I do add in the carbs to make sure it isn’t the my chronic THC use, or if it’s post finasteride syndrome.

For the algorithm, but I also really appreciate the truth and balanced take on things. You tell the truth without attacking low carb because of a minor downside. I'm not a fan of low carb but it's refreshing to not hear "never do this" or "always do this." One of the only channels I can find that with and I almost always come to your channel to see if you go over some studies I hear elsewhere.

If someone is 35% calories from proteins and 35% calories from carbs, he is indeed low fat, which in turn affects testosterone. That said, Paul Saladino cited low testosterone as a reason to reincorporate fruits and honey in his carnivore diet (which resolved the issue). Robert Ciwes points at insuline suppression effects of long term keto diets on testosterone, and advocates a regular intake of some minimal carb to spike insuline once in a while.

how the fuck 30%of fat is "low fat"???????????
@AbuMaxime
@AbuMaxime Ай бұрын
@ads94116 30% in terms of total calories consumed (not mass) is indeed low fat. If you do a low carb diet, you should be about 65% calories from fat, 30% from proteins, and 5% from carbs. Again, it's in calories term, not mass.

As a keto camper and a runner I can tell that after hitting more than 15k three days a week in moderate pace my testosterone crashed, even doing weight lifting my test was really bad, so, I had to tweak from 10% of carbs to 25% Some will say "that's not keto anymore" But after years on a very low carb diet I don't produce any significant amounts of ketones (blood tested) So,,, guess ketosis doesn't matter anymore for me. What I do now: I keep it low carb, lots of fat and meat every day but once a week I eat just whatever I find, honey, fruits, cereal, bread, donuts, 🍩 don't just call it a cheat day, it's a strategy, that's it. Let's face it, no matter how adapted we get to fats,,, high performance demands resources,

For those suggesting that it's due to the "keto" aspect, it's important to note that a healthy keto diet can actually increase testosterone in certain individuals. However, I believe that consistently following a high-carb diet over a lifetime may eventually disturb insulin resistance, potentially leading to lower testosterone levels and causing additional health issues.

LCD’s aren’t the best and cause unnecessary stress on the body to include lowering hormones, muscle loss and slows the metabolism. The majority of people that do LCD’s most always go back to eating carbs because they aren’t inherently unhealthy-aside from short term use for some medical conditions. The cell runs on sugar, and fat is our body’s backup system and using fat as our main fuel actually increases fat oxidation and is the main cause of insulin resistance in cells, especially polyunsaturated versions. Yes LCD’s are better than the standard American diet but isn’t the long term better approach IMO. Love your videos!!

Is the carb content what actually matters? I think its the fat, which I think is where you were headed. I am on a low carb diet because of Type 2 diabetes. No issues with libido or testosterone levels and I eat a lot of protein - I get a decent level of fat too. I didn’t read the meta, but I wonder how many of these studies also included activity levels and types of activity when looking at any hormone level vs diet. Most nutrition research is too short term, under powered, and doesn’t acount for confounding variables to be of value. Eat what works for you and makes you feel good. Just don’t eat more fuel than you need.
@YTStopCensoringFreedomOfspeech
@YTStopCensoringFreedomOfspeech 2 жыл бұрын
Not all fats are the same, monounsaturated fats increase testosterone, polyunsaturated fats decrease testosterone but are a essential fatty acid and must be consumed for optiminal health. Saturated fats are not essential but can be used as fuel and other functions. It is important to try to maintain a 1:1 ratio between omega 3 and omega 6. Any imbalance and inflammation will persist. These studies don't clarify what kind of fats replaced the carbs. The research on fats and keto is ongoing, but the consensus is always that natural foods are the best. So vegetable oils (PUFA) that have been genetically modified to have the same smoke point as olive oil (MUFA) for high heat is likely not good to consume. Natural PUFA's do not have a high smoke point. Why are they being used for deep frying? This over use of vegetable oils in my opinion is causing all kinds of metabolic health problems. The high inflammation along with high insulin, glycotic end products is a recipe for diabetes, heart attacks, etc.

It really doesnt seem like a natural diet and its not enjoyable at all! When I went low carb….my muscles depleted and at one point, my sugar was crashing in to the 40’s-50’s on the glucometer. I started getting heart palpitations. My body was finding it very hard to adjust to a low carb diet. Now I try and keep my carbs below 200 grams per day and that seems to be a happy medium for retaining muscle mass.

the sluggishness was likely due to dehydration. You got to up your electrolytes a lot especially in the first few months of transitioning to keto.

@Manuel Schmidt ... why is SHBG important if you get normal testosterone levels from changing food/lifestyle? ... *curious*
@Kickboxer7267
@Kickboxer7267 2 жыл бұрын
@@frankl2770 Because total testosterone is just testosterone which is circulating in your blood without function. What matters is free testosterone. SHBG is binding with testosterone and makes it useless. The higher your SHBG the lower your free testosterone. The lower your SHBG the higher your free testosterone.

@Manuel Schmidt ... I guess a SHBG test won't show much in my case ... because as I just read it bind to testosterone, DHT and Estradiol. and in my case are my hormones already messed up with higher levels Estradiol... so not sure it will show anything useful?

I did a low carb diet in the early 90's for 4 months and lost strength left and right. Then did low carb again in 1998 - 1999 for 14 months , and lost weight, but body composition was terrible. I calculated 1/3 of the weight loss was from muscle, and 5% of the weight loss was water weight.

Keto/Carnivore people say that insulin reduces free testosterone. Carb people say that keto/carnivore raises shbg which binds free testosterone and makes it unusable. I'm so fckn tired of this confusing bs.

You mentioned HF diets have been shown to affect testosterone compared to LF diets. In what way?
@cameronthomp
@cameronthomp Жыл бұрын
I believe HF diets have been shown to spare testosterone, whereas LF diets have been known to lower testosterone and/or have other negative effects (if dropped too low), I.e. low libido, low mood, depression, malabsorption of fat-soluble vitamins.

I tried a ketogenic diet, but my job is to physically demand, kept elite fitness for over 30 years, I had to drag myself to the gym, cycling, etc. Try to build muscle at 65, hard to do with a - energy metabolism. Feel way better with a plant based approach, with a little meat. I have learned there Re 0 Science on low-carb diets. The people on the internet are the study for the rest of us, thx.

But I've noticed a significant reduction in libido I wonder if it has something to do with affecting the testosterone or cortisol levels
