Hey great video and clearly explained. Could that also get rid of water in the diesel when it is emulgated? I have like 45 liters of diesel with estimated 10% of water in it, which I want to get rid of.

Why do you think it is emulgated …has there been an emulgating agent added to it? Like the eggyolk in mayonnaise . Without this no mayo but several layers of vinegar and oil To be separated by gravity Normally these two components shift and waterseparetors are build to separate just this two layers

Normally if your primary filter has a water separator, then yes. However, if something has been added that binds the water to the fuel then I doubt it.

You can get a 12v diesel automotive fuel pump for about 25-30.00 U.S. that will pump 1/2 to 1 gallon a minute at an auto parts store like AutoZone or advance auto etc.

When you are done and put the strainer lid back on, there will be air in the hoses, right? Couldn't that be a problem?

You are correct Andreas. On the Bavaria it turned out not to be an issue though because the level of the full fuel tank was above the strainer so it was easy to prime the hose to the strainer with gravity and then a few manual pumps of the lifter pump with a downstream bleed screw open took care of the rest. On our new boat (Thankfulness 2 - Ford Sabre engine) having air in the lines after changing the filters is much more of a problem. No matter how many times we manually pump the fuel through it's not enough. We found that the solution is to crank the engine for a few seconds with the bleed screw on the injector block open and the fuel kill switch activated. Works a treat every time.

I read up a bit after reading your answer, and if I am correct, the kill switch in off position makes the fuel pump run and the motor will turn over but not start. I will have to do a lot of maintenace of the kind you are describing in spring, so I am preparing myself... :) Just for whoever might find it helpful, I found a very practical guide on how to bleed air out of the system. kzbin.info/www/bejne/kKiZqKOsn62YbNE . It is in Swedish but still easy to understand.

Sounds about right. On our new boat (which is old - 1987) the kill switch is simply a mechanical coupling to the fuel line on the injector block. Pulling the kill switch simply blocks the fuel line cutting off fuel. The bleed screw on our injector block seems to be between this mechanism and the incoming fuel which is why it works for us. I was a bit nervous you would lose the rag inside the tank, maybe caught on a baffle or sharp edge, I think I would have quickly sewn it on for peace of mind! But otherwise great job!!

Hi John. The simple answer is that you should never have to polish your fuel. If you keep your fuel tank full and properly winterize you should be trouble free. a sign you might have a problem if there i excessive water in the glass bowl (water separator) at the base of the filter. A sign that there is a problem will be if there's evidence of diesel bug when you do a filter change. If the inspection port on the tank allows you can also take a look. If you have concerns, adding an additive to kill diesel bug is an option. From The Looks of it YOUR TANK was clean.....I seen much much worse I would However invest in a Racor Filter 2 -10 Micron filter with a site Bulb. you could Also Filter all fuel going into tank with racor funnel Filter I never trust marinas fuel systems I even inspect if they use water Separator filters and See when Changed last.. I once took on fuel and saw the Filters in place on Pump....No dates !! so i took a Sharpie Marked them Myself returned 8 Months Later Guess what.......Yes same Filters '

Yes, that was the strange thing. The tank was 99% clean but the on/off valve as completely blocked. Also, great tip about prefiltering before going into the tank. Thanks.

Hey Pilgrim. Thanks for taking the time to comment. I agree wholeheartedly that plastic is a scourge on our lives. At the time of making the video, bottled water was the best option for us to get safe drinking water. Rather than throwing out the empty bottles I saved them so I could at least recycle them and get one more use out of them. And swings and round abouts - we eat very little processed food. so use way less plastic than most people because of all the packaging we don't buy. Have a great day...
