How about a hauled truck with battery stacking module. The truck can be on one wheel maintaining balance with the heavy car in front or on two wheel with cable connection to share load or to back up main battery on the car. The truck can be designed to have enough for luggage. You can stack more batteries for longer trips. You can also use solar rod on parabolic mirror focusing sunlight to recharge the stacked battery as well on the hauled truck.

The price of lithium batteries has dropped quite a bit since this video was made. And at 1/3rd the weight and with an even higher energy density, it would make quite a bit of difference to the overall performance of this vehicle: Less weight, higher top speed, faster acceleration (due to less weight AND because lithium batteries can discharge faster than lead acid). They even make lithium car batteries so that his setup would not need to be adjusted too much. Just checked: These lithium car batteries range in price between about $75 and over $500.

@paytontech what i was saying is, to get more speed, more voltage is needed 72v at least ....its a good start ;) but 144volts (or more) using tundersky batery could bring this project so much more than you expect !

The maximum vehicle speed and load carrying capacity is limited by a combination of battery voltage (more volts-faster speed) the RPM capacity of the motor (too many rpm--motor comes apart), amperage capacity of the motor (too many amps from too heavy load-overheat), combined with the gear ratio of the vehicle's transmission and differential. If you're asking how you control speed going down the road, then there is an electrical control connected to the pedal that controls voltage to the motor.

If you can find it there was a broadcast on pbs that showed a group in Michigan that was converting 50s and 60s model cars to electric and where getting about the same results as people using small cars. They would get about 60 miles out of an 8 hr charge.

Thanks for the video, I have a Datsun pickup in my back yard with a Clark forklift motor attached to the five speed transmission. I am just waiting for the battery price to come down a little bit more. I live in town and I have it cleared to put up a small vertical wind turbine to plug into the truck when it needs a charge. other than insurance and license, and the replacement of battery's, every 5 to 7 years and tires, I think this is the way to go,

I'd love to have that setup and change the transmission for higher speeds id even mount small wind turbine on my canopy maybe a beefy solar it'd look shit but itgo further
@Tore_Lund5 жыл бұрын
Physics 101: Wind turbines on the roof does not make you go further, unless you only deploy them when parked. Higher gearing does not make you go further, it only effects your wheel torque and top speed. unbelievable big solar panels on the roof are a major drag except when driving really slow and 600W installed flat on the roof gives 480W x 6 hours = 2kWh/day which is 15 miles if you build your car twice as efficient as a Tesla (which is not hard). If you want to go far get high energy density batteries, stuff as many in the car as possible 50% of curb weight is good! Minimize aero drag and rolling resistance. Then you go 600-800 miles on a charge, but it will be as expensive as a second hand Tesla

Very Cool!! Impressive!!! Have thought about the same kind of conversion but haven't seen it done before that would actually work. What would be great is to build the body of the vehicle or fasten solar panels to it , maybe add wind turbine to generate to charge batteries, be that much closer to perpetual?? Utilities companies wouldn't like that much though. Likely would have the inventor assassinated. Is sad what kind of a world we live in, Tesla for example all his work was destroyed due to greed and yet a lot of his ideas have been reinvented and are in use today. Keep up the good work!!! I am envious of your accomplishments!!!

Voltage x Amps = Power. Voltage makes electrons move, and you get a electro-magnetic field that moves the rotor. If you need a certain voltage, there are few choices, but I would go customizing the engine wiring to work at certrain voltage. An electric engine repair shop could do this.

Don't know for certain, but like John Root, the renewable energy consultant, says in the report, doesn't it seem like developing lightweight batteries that would hold a longer charge would be a good investment of R&D money? @DanFrederiksen13 жыл бұрын
@gfhnk in pricinple that's still possible. but the battery would need high current capability. a typical car might need a minimum of 20kW to move practically. at 15V that's over 1000A. no standard products available for that type of operation. you probably want to string together at least 6 12V batteries in series for 72V. then you can use a used alltrax controller or such from ebay. it will still be relatively low speed but it will work. check evalbum. com for typical choices

Great idea. Maybe you could put some solar panels on the roof it might extend your range.
@martinez1701a6 жыл бұрын
Ben I hear that alot but it would not make a difference you simply do not have enough area on you car to do this, you would need an area the size of a house, people assume you get so much power from solar but in reality our best solor panels are only about 20% efficient consumer panels are only about 12-15% efficient at best.
@ben80906 жыл бұрын
+martinez1701a You are wrong. I have panels in my home. They are meant to be 23% efficient. and a Tesla type wall storage bank. BTW I was referring to the roof of the Van/car. Whilst the car is in the day light, it would add some charge even on a cloudy day .
@ben80906 жыл бұрын
Well as you're SO crude, mine is 10" (REALLY) Thanks for the offer but I won't be blowing smoke anywhere nr you....I only like women ;) lol You can get them around 50% efficiency but they are very expensive. But if you have the panels covering the roof of the car and yr home, that should go a long way to fully charge your batteries. Ever thought of building a Tesla type Wall power bank? using 18650 cells?

Gas+oil is about 2 times the cost of the electricity+batteries (everyone ignores battery replacement cost which is huge). Range is limited, charges take forever, the cars are heavy, and storage space is limited if at all. Most Americans live less than 50 miles from their full time job (8 hours), so you should have over a 50 mile range (about 100) and get a full charge while at work. Weight will drop as cellphones improve (cellphones are the cause for the most battery r&d), but so what about the

A homemade electric car is an affordable alternative to an expensive hybrid. Many people think hybrid electric cars are the answer. But they are expensive. Many cant afford to be strapped with another payment. Availability right now is also an issue. It's questionable whether or not the savings in gas justify the increased cost of a hybrid. Plus your still buying gas!
