So there’s recently been other content creators out there try to say that you should NOT waste your time on “smalls” while STARTING your business and that they would rather build a $10,000 item instead of several smalls…well… so would I. But We don’t have the luxury of the machinery needed for this or the customer base. YET. Build your smalls alongside your larger items. Fluid income is a necessity for growth!

I once read about an art show where most of the artists were presenting paintings priced at 2-3 thousand dollars. At the end of the weekend show, most were carping and griping about what a miserable show it had been sales-wise. Except for one fellow. His philosophy was that almost everyone had at least $35 of discretionary money in their pocket, so he priced nearly everything he had at $35 or less. He sold almost everything brought and made more money than the other artists would have made selling just one of their paintings. Small works!

Another GREAT video! ! ! Thank you SO MUCH - Because of your videos I have made MUCH more money with FAR LESS headaches and out of pocket cost with smalls than I ever did with big items, (Tables, Coffee Tables, Hall Trees etc. I've almost completely stopped doing that work). We recently tore down and replaced our backyard cedar fence, instead of letting them just haul it away, I kept the best pieces and now have a supply of beautiful naturally weathered boards. I've been using that to make signs, frames, trays, etc. Look for materials in places wherever you can that might not be obvious. Maybe a neighbor is tearing something down and you can re-mill the lumber into something usable. Most of all, Keep It Simple. People really like simple, rustic items and they are willing to pay for them. One thing I had to learn was, don't be afraid to charge for your time and talent. Don't sell yourself and your art short. Thanks again Matt for helping us all, keep up the great work ! ! !

Hi Matthew, the "Smalls" videos started making their way to my recommended and I knew immediately I needed to subscribe. Me and my wife are self employed and make all our money from small, easy, and cheap things to make. I have a great variety of tools in our workshop but I'm no master woodworker. Your big pieces are absolutely amazing works of art BTW. I'd love to see you do a video about all of your favorite finish products. I feel like even with smalls the right finish can change the value and quality so much. My wife has been doing the distressed look already for some time, but there are so many products i haven't tried in terms of getting the best natural or protective finishes. Dude! I absolutely love your videos (especially the ones like this), I only have a small space (6’x3’) to work in and have managed to fit in a table saw, band saw, planer & miter saw. But that’s all I can as it leaves me 1’x4’ to move around in (luckily I’m super thin lol), however big items are a no go and medium items (table and chair for my 2 yo son) have to be assembled and finished in my house. Doing small, cheap items is the way to go for me until I can save enough money to rent a unit to work from. 🤙

METAL WOKER HERE! ive been struggling to find products to sell. your advice on 'smalls' took alot of weight off my shoulders! im usually sitting around waiting for the next big railing, gate, hardware order to come my way. i do work with alot of wood but metal is my passion, now i have alot of probability on profit. outside the box is hard because ill over think outside the box. google was a super good tip!

Hey Aaron - I've seen some decorative metal work in catalogs that look to be the small metal (looks almost like 16 gauge electric fence wire) curled into spirals and stuck in the ground in sets of three. People buy that stuff. Or the metal spiral stakes that would be a great companion to the trellis or obelisk Matt has on another video.

I really like your approach using strips of wood. I am remodeling a house built in 1902 and have more lath boards than I know what to do with. Lath boards out of an old house remodel are always rough cut and usually 1.5" x 0.25" but have variation to make the "rustic" look. I think the best part is that they are free! Thanks brother! Some of our fellow content creators are saying smalls are a waste of time and have no profit margin 😂. That there's more money in making $10,000 furniture. Must be nice. Tobacco sticks are very similar to drying sticks in the lumber industry. May be a lil easier to find.

Selling a ton of burgers to a lot of people at a cheap price ended up being so much more lucrative than his $150 a head fancy restaurant model. Smiles for life

I have pieces that look like them from making thin slices off of sides of scrap 2x4s (i was making dollhouse siding). They are still strong but slightly flexible for that light weaving in the example.

A friend of mine today posted they had about 100 balusters from an old deck they were replacing. They had that gray ashy look to them and a lot of character so I grabbed them up as well as a few other pieces. Planning on making a few flags with the baluster.

I do not only have the tools, but also SO many of the (mostly reclaimed) materials seen in this video, just laying around, collected from all kinds of places, knowing I would use them "one day", but in most cases I had NO idea for what! Until now! I've had to resist MANY attempts from friends to "get rid of all that junk. We'll help you!". But I live alone, it's all MY junk, and soon MY fun making things and perhaps even earning a few kroner selling 1 or 2 projects... ( ....and if I can't resist; perhaps even a "who laughs last") Once you get the first inspiration, you realize YOU can do it, and you start working, many more ideas will come. And there is no going back. Just forwards, making some mistakes, learning from them, and forwards you go, with a smile on your face. It's not about what you don't have, but how you use what you have, and move forwards. When it comes to coat hooks you could always purchase cheap spoons, flatten the spoon part, drill a small hole or two, curve the handle portion and perhaps even spray paint. Just a thought on saving some money.

My boys and a friend have made 45-50 of those cross wall art pieces and sold them as as fundraiser for national bible quizzing in Ohio. They needed to raise over $400 each and your video gave us the idea and they've loved making them. 3 teen boys in the shop has tested my patience sometimes too. Matthew, thank you for your great instructional videos. I have looked at your plans and they are attractive and well-detailed. I admire your can-do approach, which I see as getting folks beyond self-defeating thoughts to action, taking that first step. I like that you talk about your prototypes and that it took several tries to get to what you present as your product. The lessons are there - take the first step, then keep the faith and take a few more. Folks are hurting so, so bad, mentally and financially. That first small success, which is what you open the door to, is the base for recovery and hope. Regarding the smalls, I believe you are on exactly the right track. I don’t think anything makes people happier than finding something original, handmade and beautiful at price they can pay. There are many more people of modest means in this world than rich people who can afford the $10K stuff. A beautiful little piece that can become part of a Christmas ornament tradition or be integrated into serving guests is a wonderful thing, and if it sells for $20, even better. Anyway, count me as an admirer, and I wish you a million subscribers.

I just stumbled onto this series. In the 80s my stepdad made wood cutouts of ducks and geese for decor. It got us through a very lean time after he lost a job. It surprised us all what hot sellers they were at the flea market.

Recently discovered your youtube page and I'm hooked, especially with the fence picket usage. I am about to start some planters and a few other things, but I needed a small rustic night stand and used 1 1/2 pickets to make it. It came out great! The one thing I was surprised about is the shrinkage in these things. I used PT (can not find cedar) and I lose about 1/8" due to shrink, which can lead to 1/4" when you butt two against each other. I don't care as its rustic, but man, these things shrink. Thank you for all you do posting these projects.

We dont have Pottery Barn in the UK, but we have IKEA which I think is the same sort of store. They have their Marketplace that sell coasters, and baskets and wall art etc. I have seen people at the tills with mountains of this stuff especially on the run up to Christmas. I am definitely going to be making a few simple things to sell at local craft fairs this summer.

Lol. Yeaaaaa. In my earlier videos I would always mention that if you wanted to make something to sell make atleast 5-10. The wife and family will claim them!

Mathew I have made money using a $87 palm router. Make a design in any board paint it any color. I have the ends of a privacy fence pickets I got for free. I put my five minute router art on it with a rustic outside frame (scrap) sell at local handmade shops at varying prices depending on size. Sold 12 X 12 s for $85.
