Thank You Matthew! I live in a rural area. Work is difficult to come by...seasonal, and tourist associated...hotels, ski areas. So, I'm relegated to ski lift attendant, bed maker, and ticket taker. I have 2 degrees!! To make matters worse? I'm getting older, 57- back issues. Scoliosis, lordosis- getting worse yearly. Bottom line? This will work for me! I can see myself succeeding! THANK YOU!! it's a light at the end of my tunnel...and not an oncoming train!

Did this at least 45 years ago. I was almost always running 18 months out on my schedule. Plenty of work. Plenty of profit. Could have made a LOT more by building smalls. For the larger high-end projects I did (mill & case, furniture) there was always a demand for top quality and at top dollar people expect you to deliver but they often expect a discount. A birdhouse won’t send you to the chiropractor. A 4’ pantry will. Stay small, stay rustic, and duplicate. I know a guy who made small tops on his lathe. It took no time to make them. He made a quick frame on a 12” mirror tile. He would try to keep the tops spinning. Those tops paid for his shop.

Thirteen years ago, I retired from the Army. Itransitioned into lawn care. I'm nolooking to get into woodworking. I saw your video onbasic tools. I even have a few of the more advanced ones! I'mat an impasse. I want to build stuff to sell, but Ihave no outlet. I like the suggestions about using Facebook and maybe a couple of other sites. I'll take what I have already made and see what I can do. I know it won't be easy, or quick, from my lawn care days. I was in business for about a couple of years before I had an established clientele. Ofcourse, Iwouldn't turn anything down. Everything I did was in my realm of expertise. As long as I remember that lesson, I hope to do well. Promising a Cadillac when I can only manage a scooter won't do anyoneany favors.

I took your advice on the name and came up with one that stands out, but open ended enough to not pigeonhole me into just the woodworking category, a lot like how millworks does in yours. It is also heavily inspired by another KZbinrs channel name lol. I have an interest in adding metalworking into my art at some point down the road, so I didn’t want woodworks to be the sole focus, even though it’ll always be my main focus.

One Word - CHARITY! I'm going to put this out there. Build a nice porch swing, farm table, set of matching planter boxes, whatever. Now find a local charity and donate that piece for a silent auction (or a live auction). Play to the higher income brackets. See who some local doctors or lawyers support and insert yourself into that circle as a builder. Act like you and your skills belong in that group because you do. Put a slightly higher price on the piece than you would usually. (Farm Table - $500 value - Silent Auction - All Proceeds benefit St. Jude's Children's Hospital). Those that DON'T win the auction may still want a piece like that and order one. Now, you can haggle over the inflated price and make sure you "cut that person a special deal - ("I can't do this for everyone, but for YOU, I can take $425). Now, you are in a charity circle along with people that have disposable income and you are "the guy/girl" with the hookup on woodworking projects. Also, you helped raise money for charity. Win-win-win.

Matthew, I am a now essentially disabled ex-contractor/remodeler of homes. I have fought chronic back issues for pretty much all of my life and I recently had a major change in my back. I have had to officially hang up my toolbelt for good. I have had my woodshop for the last 30+ years and I have decided that if I cannot work anymore then it's time to open the shop to the public. I can carefully work in the shop on the good days but I cannot just bust ass for 10-12 hours a day anymore. I have been watching videos for the last about 1.5 years trying to decide on what in the hell I want to build that will actually sell. I ran across your videos and I would like to say thanks for just being yourself and not trying to be over rehearsed and sounding scripted. Your video productions are very well done and edited seamlessly. So there is a little sunshine pumped into the old ego system! And thank god for not having sponsors that need to be plugged 10 times every 5 minutes.. That just pisses me off. I am an old man now and I don't really give a rats rear end who you get free products from. Send me some stuff... Keep the videos coming brother...... you are helping me more than I could ever tell you. One thing that I kind of did just for fun and as a time killer was to build adirondack chairs at 1/8th scale. I did a ton of drafting at school and I can draw blueprints so I am anal enough that I draw everything out to scale and then spend hours at the scroll and band saws along with what seems like days at the disc sanders. I of course picked the most ornate chair plan I could find and I started building them and people actually really love them. My mom has a pair on her desk and my sister uses one to hold business cards and a few other friends have some. I even ordered #0 and #1 screws so that the screw head would be proportional to the width of the back slats. ANAL huh! I mean they are pretty cool however the wood is usually ripped down from scraps so I don't have much in material costs but the shop supplies plus my time makes the chairs have to be about $55- $65 dollars min and if I use a standard shop hourly rate I am still losing money and they are crazy priced if I just use $75 an hour as shop rate. So they are not a good choice for anything other than maybe becoming promotional to show my craftsmanship. Thoughts??? I'll stop rambling on and on now and sincerely, thanks for helping a dumbass kid that lost track of time and all the sudden was 52 years old and physically just plain wore his body out since starting at the age of 7 years old picking up trash at job sites. LOL Peace

As someone who is just starting to do this on a public platform i certainly appreciate your channel and your advice. I actually got my biz email. Now to achieve the domain and web and so on. I started my woodworking back in in 73. 7th grade. I was hooked. I still have my 1st end table i made in 8th grade. Yes I'm proud of it. I show it off often. The good thing is i have all the tools i need for this.😊 I never advertised before. It was a word of mouth kind of thing. I made and repaired furniture for the most part dabbled in other carpentry. Now this. Fingers crossed. Thanks again

Where I started out making smalls (boxes, ornaments, pens, things of that nature) I went with Azure Wood Working with the motto "I make the things to make you say AWW!" It's cheesy I know, but you'd be surprised how many people said it before I came up with the name (plus blue is my favorite color so it worked out). Due to moving in 2020 and an injury last year, I'd sold off a good bit of my tools just because we didn't have a place to work (renting sucks and I'll never do it again). Now I'm in the process of rebuilding my hustle as much as I can (the injury was bad enough it's slowed me down greatly). I love the fact that pretty much everything you've said has been my exact experience growing. I got the catchy name, email, Esty (that I've rarely used) and facebook page. Just a few weeks ago, I got the domain for my business locked down and will hopefully have a page soon.

Hey Matthew, I came across your channel a short while back. You’re always full of great tips and projects. My wife and I recently started a side business where she does the crafts (printing and vinyling mugs, shirts, stickers, etc….) and I do the woodworking projects that she needs. I’ve heard some of these tips before, but you highlighted some smart things I did not know. We appreciate your knowledge and input. As a side note: I absolutely love that split chest of drawers in the background! Do you have a video or plan available on how to make it? Keep up the great work!!

Thanks for watching! And that split dresser has no plans. 280 different angles… took me months to build. I do have an old video on building it.

Love and appreciate all your vids. Just starting out myself, I have done some woodworking in the past but looking at what think sells, I.E. smalls, I've been totally motivated in doing this full-time. Question, what do call a side hustle income to be? weekly. I'm an artist and know with a little teaks on these smalls these could be fun and amazing to build. Oh, I'll be buying your plans shortly. Thank you again, really inspiring

Mr Peech, great video, just like all your videos. I was forced into retirement at 70 by my company after 28 years. I'm now 74 and I've been getting into woodworking for about 6 years I've made some really nice things, chess boards, rocking horses, rustic wine racks but I've never sold anything. I don't have a website or blog. but I'm very interested in having a web site. Could you do a video about how to get a web site or You Tube site.

Just saw on your Instagram you are a Nurse as well as a Father, Husband and Handyman. No wonder you started a side hustle, "Be a nurse they said, it'll be fun they said". Lol, I'm a nurse too trying to figure out some extra income instead of that PRN gig.
