Looking forward to joining your paid website Matt. Your video content has always been top draw, can't say I've never failed to be entertained and more importantly actually learn something watching your videos. I remember searching for a used car pre-purchase video a few years ago and found your excellent 3 part series, I've never looked back since. Matt nice clear demo. Thank you. Like u I am never satisfied just to b told the issue but want to understand y our testing technique shows prob. Here’s my thought. If we use ignition and rep comp to indicate timing, and ig timing is driven by crank sensor, the even if cams/valves are out of time, would not to ig sig always be at the correct TDC (ie from crank trigger) - unless the crank sprocket itself has slipped (possible on Ford engines with no keyway)??? Obviously I am missing something cos u correctly show TDC Ig misalignment. Your thoughts?

I have join recently, but seems like those videos are so comprehensive and really helpful. Would you advice where to start with Nissan Serena c26Mr20DD mfg2011. Having lack of power after vehicle warmed up and especially after an hour of driving. Engine does roaring at 3k rpm then smooth. As you said feels the same like am pulling a trailer. Stft sometime jumps to 40% normally plus minus 15-20%. Release accelerator, af ratio goes to lean. Unfortunately I don't have much specialist around my place :). No DTCs. Maybe iportant to know am Kenya nairobi. 1.7Km above sea level. Vehicle behavior is a way better in cold environment. Sorry just having this issue for some time no one can sort it out or even find a way forward. Matt, launch makes a higher end scantool only available through Matco. ..maybe there's another big brand in other countries as they're the biggest scan tool maker in the world...I digress. That scantool also has fewer pids than what a Nissan dealer tool would see. I'm talking about huge gaps in EGR, no live misfire data, etc. Usually my work's scantool is just awesome and feels so much like the dealer level scantool that it is, but in the end it's not Nissan's tool is it? Crazy fun, sidenote to the extreme, I worked on a mini cooper the other day and my shop normally avoids those except for very simple procedures, but "we broke it" during an oil change so I got roped into diagnosing it. The data was fast like a modern obd ii computer but the data available? It was like a new retro car back to the 80's. It was extremely simple so I had to direct test every suspicion until I found the issue. Normally BMW's are filled to the brim with available data. BMW makes the mini, "mini", on data. It was very fun, but ultimately frustrating for a boss who had to pay me to do the fix. It had a slight misfire which was ultimately fixed by having the coil packs more firmly shoved in place. The use a plastic lever to secure them. No bolts. Vibration would slowly free such a design. Shoddy and cheap if you ask me.

I only ask as i noticed the settings on the vantage pro were for low amp clamp.....as the pattern and not the amperage reading was the import thing in this case was that the reason for using the high amp clamp on the low amp preset? All joking aside...Just like in this video regarding power I have very low power on my Mercedes S600 V12 and symptoms of a bad TPS. However I'm not getting ANY codes for this! This might also be a bad MAP sensor but I disconnected it and it ran the same. So does that rule that out? Although admittedly the car hasn't been driven much to illicit codes and has been in the shop for 2 months. Both me and my mechanic hate to throw parts at this car but a TPS sounds close here.
@SchrodingersBox6 жыл бұрын
what data do you have? What was the MAP output that made you suspect it? Whats the LTFT curve aganst load? what variables were induced?

Thx for responding, but I haven't gotten to the 4.5 v. outputs of either line as yet (there are two-- one for ea.bank) or to check for a bad gr. wire yet (above .100 isn't it?). What throws me are the lack of codes.

NEW VIDEO IDEA: Please do a video on the GM Passlock System with the inductive chip (not the resister in key). Just paid my dealer $800 to replace it. All other mechanics didn't have programing tools. Is there a bypass for the INDUCTIVE system? (Lots of videos on putting a resister across the resister key contacts, not applicable.) Dealer said no firmware or setting for the Body Control Module to turn it off. For other cars if the security light goes on I want to disable Passlock, not needed in the least. I successfully used the 10 minutes on, 10 seconds off times 3 start sequence to start the car and drive it to the dealership. Thanks Matt.

I had a similar thing once... expect I did re-checked the CAM before running it... Swapped cams for "race" version in my bike (Suzuki RF900) and before the tensioner was installed it looked ok.... After not.... had some slack in the chain so it looked fine... so can be that they had a similar thing but still ... someone failed to re check the timing after tensioning .

I haven't finished the video yet, so I'm probably wrong -= and I sure wouldn't spend money on a guess anyway - but whenever someone tells me the car has been sitting for a year or more and the engine feels like it's choking or plugged...my first thought is to look for a rodent nest in the air cleaner. It's quick and easy to check, and it's surprisingly common to find. And boy, can those nests block up the air flow! *grabs popcorn and settles back to find out just how wrong I am* :-)
@aussiebloke6096 жыл бұрын
Edit: Hey, sometimes it's good to be wrong - so long as I learn. :-)
@SchrodingersBox6 жыл бұрын
It's not really wrong- it was a hypothesis that was simplky disproven by data. I was also "wrong" about the exhaust being plugged and in the full video I was wrong about ignition, compression and other hypotheses. It's important to know in a diagnostic procedure you're almost always wrong on your initial hypotheses- just like in any science.
@aussiebloke6096 жыл бұрын
True, it's always important to not assume, but I figure I'm not _really_ "wrong" until I decide I know what the problem is - and find I'm incorrect. It's fun to guess, so long as I don't get my head stuck in that rut of assumption (same as you, when you find your initial hypothesis is disproven)...and so long as I'm not shelling out champagne coupons before the real problem is confirmed. Nice job, mate. :-) As a side note - I've seen it so often on "stored" cars that it's probably always a good thing to take a quick look at anyway. Those damn mice seem to be able to get in just about everything.
@SchrodingersBox6 жыл бұрын
Exactly right Aussie. Being wrong guessing is when you conclude something is the problem, replace parts accordingly, and find "ooops that didn't fix it". Thats what parts changers do.

Walking thru the Southern California junk yards it isn’t just your scan tools not working well with Nissans.. The actually issue is Nissan not working well with Nissans by the upside down ratio of Nissans to other manufacturers!
@denrayr6 жыл бұрын
Do you think it's possible that your amp clamp was installed backwards? If you invert your relative compression waveform, it makes more sense to me. The spark signal is closer to a peak compression event, and the minimums are relatively equal with each other. You can see three cylinders with relatively equal higher compression and three cylinders with relatively equal lower compression. IMO, the inverted waveform looks more like what you would expect to see with one bank being a couple of teeth off. Just a thought to add to the discussion...
@SchrodingersBox6 жыл бұрын
Yes good observation- no when I tried inverted it was clear the signal was incorrect. Besides the signal matched the compression tests I did AND also the timing was indeed off on bank 2- something we would not have seen even if the inverted signal was "correct". Also the Amp Clamp has a very clear polarity indicator on how to place it relative to B+. I like the thought though!
@denrayr6 жыл бұрын
You are right. I had to switch from my phone to my laptop for a better look. I counted 40 teeth on the cam pulley. That makes 9 degrees per tooth. 3 teeth off would be 27 degrees. If you look at the spark signal, it is about half way between two cylinder peak compression events. It is a six cylinder engine, so there is 60 degrees between the two events. Half way (where the spark trigger occurred) would be 30 degrees, so the waveform makes sense (close enough). If you invert the signal, the spark signal is only 5-10 degrees off. Thanks for the cool video.
@SchrodingersBox6 жыл бұрын

The KZbin video serving business model is continually changing and Video Creators are getting paid less and less as a result. To many Video Creators, time is valuable and they need to get paid for their time. The good youtube channels will go pay in the next few years and use their own video servers. If you have no intention of paying, enjoy the few channels that you can now while they are free. In the next three years, I predict KZbin will become more of a promotional advertising billboard for these valuable Video Creators.

The age of the car is not always relevant. If you know anything about Matt and his channel you would know that his approach is about taking a logical thought based approach to diagnostic rather than a guess approach. Often, his videos are about the process of diagnostic rather than the nuts and bolts of the work. Certainly your option to pay or not, but, his ego aside, his information on approach and reasoning (for example his 4 or 5 part series on understanding fuel trims) is indeed valuable to some of us. Also, his channel helps fill a void in the diagnostic channels on KZbin, in my opinion. Yes ScannerDanner, SMA, ETCG, and Pine Hollow all are EXCELLENT channels and provide a ton of very useful information. To that end, Matt uses tools that are reasonable to the average DIY person. I do not know many DIY people that have a $10K Verus and a $3.5K Pico scope laying around their garage. Heck you can buy that Launch scan tool and a Vantage for less than a third of the Pico price alone. Again, all the channels provide excellent information, but each has their approach and place in the KZbin market, in my view.
@markreseburg64516 жыл бұрын
Why would anyone pay for this type of content? Well.... this channel shows the fundamentals of how things work. You need to understand fundamentals to fix new cars and even "aged vehicles that aren't relevant to you". There are way more parts changers in the automotive industry than people who can actually troubleshoot problems. I've been working on cars for a very long time. Even professionally for a while. There is always something that I walk away from these videos with. By the way. Why not make a real video yourself other than you playing video games? I'm sure your one subscriber would love it.
@thelorax89046 жыл бұрын
Schrodingers Box It was not my intent to insult. I was simply stating that you seem to be pushing your non-paying viewers to become paid channel viewers. You spent the first several minutes talking solely about that. You are right, I used to watch every single one of your videos... key word is used to. I'm not paying for this type of content. Im not knocking you for what you're doing just don't expect everyone to buy into you.
