I think it is important to recognize that Arthur and Sadie were merely shells or husks of former people that were drained of almost all of their humanity and compassion by the world and by those around them. Mrs. Sadie Adler died the night they murdered Jake - what happened to her in that cabin over the three days she was held captive only served to smother and sever the tenuous connections she may have retained after watching her one, true love die. Eventually, Arthur’s kind nature seemingly revived a very primitive sense of loyalty and empathy, at its most basic levels, within Sadie; she seemed to enjoy his company and companionship despite their similarly quiet stoicism juxtaposed with the bouts of bravado to mask what they viewed - internally - as weakness. Arthur Morgan was mostly dead sometime before the game even began, perhaps the bulk of his death happened in one fell swoop the moment he joined Dutch and Hosea, or maybe it was a slow death marked by carrying out orders that compromised whatever sense of integrity he had before. Whatever the case may be, the sensation of losing one’s soul may seem terrifying when viewed from a distance, but is much easier to deny when it’s followed with copious amounts of chaser in the form of money, alcohol, sex, crime, or almost anything that releases the rush of adrenaline and endorphins. Oddly enough, it’s that quickly fleeting sensation of excitement that often seals the fate of people like Sadie and Arthur. They are subconsciously programmed to react to specific external triggers and social cues - like an autopilot function - affording them the ability to coast through a rather bleak existence that is haphazardly pockmarked by dangerous yet alluring encounters that momentarily reanimate the more rudimentary portions of emotion and desire. Much like a modern zombie obliviously navigating a variety of terrains and roadblocks just to fulfill that base urge; Arthur and Sadie were set to a form of cruise control, allowing other people to guide their path and walling themselves off emotionally from the outside world, respectively. I understand those who “ship” Arthur and Sadie, but would implore them to revisit each interaction between the two characters and recognize that on some level they were more connected with one another than with any other person in the gang. Their relationship was compelling and multifaceted and pressed the very limitations of what little humanity was left within each person. In some ways, what they had transcended a colloquial sense of love and was deeper and far more complex than any carnal act could possibly hope to achieve. In a very psychological sense, Arthur and Sadie were the beneficiaries of a rare and divine miracle that most people in their circumstances will never experience; they not only witnessed a resurrection of personhood within each other but were the catalysts for said revival. Arthur saw, through Sadie’s story arch, the wake of his own actions and decisions rippling outward causing immeasurable and irreparable damage to anyone and everyone unfortunate enough to pass through his life. He saw in her, the countless victims left to wander through an existence devoid of anticipation or even contentment once they’d received the fatal touch of the gang’s actions in their lives. It was this realization that Sadie could just as easily been made a widow by almost any one of his ‘companions’ had they found her home before the O’Driscolls arrived. For Sadie, she saw that shift occur gradually in Arthur which, for her, fanned the lone ember, beyond the anger and vengeance, beneath the self pity and borderline suicidal psychosis, that tiny speck of kindling that was still smoldering deep within her own heart. Where she once may have viewed this man with contempt - seemingly no better than the men who destroyed her life - she began to see beneath the flaws and the innumerable layers of cold calculation and nearly immovable barriers he’d erected which revealed a lost boy seeking approval, at any cost, and unconditional love from his ‘father.’ She watched as Arthur grew from an unflinchingly loyal and a dogmatic devotee of a false idol, to a man questioning the whole of his purpose and impact, and, ultimately, reaching his own peak maturation in confidently and with a renewed zeal daring to challenge and stand firmly in opposition to a man he’d been not just an apostle for, but, being an active evangelical missionary in service of for the vast majority of his life. Through both their shared experiences and careful examinations of each other, Arthur and Sadie saw a universal truth in action; people can change. To me, personally, the story of these two as it stands is far more impactful and poignant than the interactions between Arthur and Charlotte, the widow, and vastly more integral in character development and expansion than that of Arthur and Mary Litton. It was the perfect love story for this game and I would not change or add a single, solitary scene in this game.

Mrs. Arthur Morgan I’ve toyed with the idea of creating a channel and doing stuff like that, however, being a southerner (born and raised in NC) I have a noticeable accent. As much as I’d like to think that shouldn’t matter, even I, myself, am guilty of making snap judgments about people based on their dialect and inflection; I think most people do the same thing. I love how the game has it’s own way of showing honor in how someone plays. Arthur so late into the story either looks like a disembodied corpse, or a man short on time who always acted as if it were his last day. Can I just say, Sadie's actress was phenomenal. She somehow managed to make a simultaneously badass, but broken, performance. The way her voice always shudders and cracks, even when she's angry or laughing, keeps reminding you that behind her hardened exterior, she's hurting in ways no one should ever have to experience. I seem to recall her voice being more firm and clear in the Epilogue. It fits with her "nothing left to lose, nowhere left to go" outlook, but also shows she's more together than before. Fitting, considering she finally gives up on trying to die by the end, having a new outlook, an actual idea of what to do with herself, and most importantly, hope.

I truly think that this game was extremely meaningful, just like this scene. It shows the toll that this has taken in them, and how they are almost not human. But they revive the emotion in one another, in small ways. And this is why these types of games are important. They show depth, and important morals. This game, along with games like Detroit: Become Human and Undertale, are some of my favorites because they make you question yourself. Who are you in this world? Other games say “You’re a super hero” or “Your a special operative” and you accept that. You are handed this persona that you blatantly accept, and you go play the game without a thought. But these games push the boundaries. They say “You are Arthur Morgan” And they say nothing more. Lore factors in, of course, but it is your choice what to do with yourself. You could feasibly murder everyone you come across, but you don’t. At least, not on the actual play through where you make choices that will influence your outcome. It matters what you do. Some people will say “Oh, the game ends up the same way in the end” and that is true. The actual story of the game stays the same. But isn’t that the same with real life? You’re born, you live, you die. It’s the experiences, the choices you make that influence who you are. That’s why they implemented the honor system. It feels rewarding to most people, to be on the good side rather than the bad. You want to feel assured that you are doing the right thing, and that you have set your character on a good path. Along the way, you experience love, hate, joy, sadness, humor, stress. And at the end you realize that not just your character feels this. You as a person feel what the character is feeling, you learn all the lessons... But most people just go “wow what a game” They don’t see what others see. And that’s the sad part, is that many people say how it was a really good game that made them feel something, but they don’t really feel it. They experience an emotion based on outside stimuli, which is the definition of feeling something, yes. But they feel the moment. They feel sad *that* something happened, not *because* something happened. It’s like saying “Oh I’m sad that they *killed him off* ” rather than “I’m sad that *he died* ” and that means something. You have to put yourself into their world. A game should make you feel like you are Arthur Morgan, rather than you are controlling him, *playing* as him. It’s not just a game. It’s an experience. A memory. You can look at art, yes. But the question is... Can you understand it?

Okay, I think part of what makes so many characters of RDR2 so good is the fact that they dared to give them some self-awareness (perhaps a bit over much). Sadie and Arthur deep down know that they are (or in Sadie's case, have become) violent people who can't live normal lives, and they cop to it whenever it is suggested otherwise by anyone. Granted, they also display time and again that they probably don't give themselves enough credit (Especially if you play an Honorable Arthur), but the fact that they are aware that they are not normal, that they are not good, and that they don't think they can be even if the opportunity presented itself, is an aspect of character that really isn't displayed that often when you think about it. At least, not displayed so earnestly and with such genuine belief from the characters themselves. That they are aware enough of themselves as people, and are willing to admit what they are aware of to themselves and others. Like, so much of what is great, here, is the fact that Sadie and Arthur know exactly who and what they are, and are willing to talk about that with each other.
@thermscissorpunch17875 жыл бұрын
I completely agree with you, my friend; Arthur and Sadie were merely shells or husks of former people that were drained of almost all of their humanity and compassion by the world and by those around them.

RD3 should be a prequel and you play as Dutch Van Der Linde, forming the gang the beef with Colm and all of that. Or make it a DLC for RD2

This was such an emotional mission--it's weird to hurt for a character (even though it happens in movies and books), but man, did I feel for Sadie. (For best results, try not to think about how with Dutch and Micah along, had the first mission with her started slightly earlier, the results would probably have been about the same.)

Doubts. RDR3 will be about Dutch and how he starts the gang with Arthur and Hosea. Sadie doesn't really become an interesting character until much later in the game. And she's just as wild about seeking revenge as Arthur and John....and we know how that turns out!
@connordutton6746 жыл бұрын
If they do make RDR3 it will allow us to play as a young Dutch around 20’s full of hope optimism idealism etc. He was more of a Robin Hood character when younger but throughout the game maybe we get glimpses of the man he will eventually become foreshadowing his descent into madness.
@jellybutterpeanut16 жыл бұрын
I think if it comes out, RDR3 will either be following a young Jack Marston assuming he became an outlaw or someone new that we haven't heard from. Safe to say it'll probably be a manly man as usual, and not a woman otherwise the fans would bug out. It might be neat if they made the protagonist like ,a freed black slave like Django that could really be awesome.
@Captain-Sum.Ting-Wong6 жыл бұрын
@@jellybutterpeanut1 People would freak out over playing as a black guy too. But yeah that would be cool to get it from the perspective of a minority who has an entire additional set of struggles to deal with than a normal outlaw.

The only man that’s better than Arthur was Charles, man didn’t really seem like he fit in with the gang too well, he’s one of the only characters who stays more of the same throughout the game. He cares about human life, cares about treating nature well, and has a great moral compass

I like how in the cut scene when Sadie is killing the O’Driscoll we are no part of it. It makes it seem like she has her own story. She has her own revenge plot and we were no part of it

Can’t tell ya how much I wish there was just a TAD of romance between Arthur & Sadie! It wouldn’t have to be for long... just like, maybe she gives old Arthur a kiss since she knows he’s gonna FUCKING DIE HORRIBLY.. like a bit before the big train job. OR maybe they could’ve given us some more than that, like before Saint Denis and all that disastrous nonsense, MAYBE she could have gone sweet on him.. just a little! Is that too much to ask? Why couldn’t sweet Sadie have given Arthur a kiss or two? Huh?! If they gave us that... if they’d put a romance arc in the miraculous, emotional story that is RDR2... that would have given it even more wholesomeness then it already had. I just think, if they wanted to give us a TRUE OLD WEST STORY, there would have to be some kind of romance. And I’m not talkin’ about that solemn, formal BS that Arthur had with that sketchy chick who sent him letters and such... I mean, I know that if the Saint Denis job hadn’t of gon awry, Arthur would have bounced and gone to live a happy life with the pretty gal. But I just think she didn’t have any real interesting character traits.. she certainly didn’t interest me as a match for the big man as much as Sadie, Abigail or Mary-Beth. I know I know, Abigail is fully in love with Johnboy, but I know for a fact that she was sweet on Arthur at one point, and Arthur even says in his journal some pretty eye-opening things about his feelings toward Abigail. I know Arthur wouldn’t have tried anything on her, I just think there was a whisper of a feeling between those two. Like maybe during the period that John was in that prison there could have been a short scene between Abigail & Arthur, like she begs him to help get John back, and when he accepts she gives him a kiss, OR Arthur would already be planning to save John before Abigail even tries to beg him, because John’s his bro, and Abigail kisses him because she knows he loves John, her and little Jack and wants to see them be happy. Mary-Beth coulda gone full bore with Arthur, and I think the same goes for Sadie but in a different way.. I think Arthur & Sadie could have had a real love connection, perhaps it could have been out of necessity or need for a lover’s touch, ya know? I mean damn, Arthur needed a kiss from at least one of those gals, and Sadie would be my top pick. Arthur said it himself, those two are more ghosts than people, so what’s the harm in ONE kiss, maybe right before his ‘last ride’, you know, the one after he SAVED their asses, and even gave some of the moneh to boot so that they would have a good chance at starting anew?? But no of course not. Arthur has to die, alone, with kiss deprived cheeks, and a mouth languishing for a woman’s lips.

It looks like you've put a lot of thought into this. I'm sure you aren't alone in wanting Arthur to have at least a bit of romance with either Sadie, Abigail or Mary-Beth.
