Public Housing and Housing Choice Vouchers (Section 8)
To apply for either type of help, visit your local Public Housing Agency (PHA). Questions? Email or call our Public Housing Information Resource Center toll-free at [phone].Some PHAs have long waiting lists, so you may want to apply at more than one PHA. Your PHA can also give you a list of locations at which your voucher can be used.

What does Section 8 mean?
The Section 8 program allows private landlords to rent apartments and homes at fair market rates to qualified low income tenants, with a rental subsidy administered by Home Forward. “Section 8” is a common name for the Housing Choice Voucher Program, funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
What are housing choice vouchers?
The housing choice voucher program is the federal government's major program for assisting very low-income families, the elderly, and the disabled to afford decent, safe, and sanitary housing in the private market. Since housing assistance is provided on behalf of the family or individual, participants are able to find their own housing, including single-family homes, townhouses and apartments.
The participant is free to choose any housing that meets the requirements of the program and is not limited to units located in subsidized housing projects.
Housing choice vouchers are administered locally by public housing agencies (PHAs). The PHAs receive federal funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to administer the voucher program.
A family that is issued a housing voucher is responsible for finding a suitable housing unit of the family's choice where the owner agrees to rent under the program. This unit may include the family's present residence. Rental units must meet minimum standards of health and safety, as determined by the PHA.
A housing subsidy is paid to the landlord directly by the PHA on behalf of the participating family. The family then pays the difference between the actual rent charged by the landlord and the amount subsidized by the program. Under certain circumstances, if authorized by the PHA, a family may use its voucher to purchase a modest home.

Hi I was just wondering where do I find a proper listing for low income apartments in DC? I am disabled ( receiving monthly benefits) I do have a HUD choice voucher but it’s being split between me and my family. I want to move into a single bedroom apartment that is decently nice with some amenities and in home laundry facilities. I am 23 years of age. I do not have a criminal or dug history. I’ve never been late on a rent paying but I do not have a credit score.

Being poor in SF has to be worse than being poor in Connecticut. My town has closed their sec 8 to applications. The waiting list has been purged. I'm in a HUD apartment. But it is in disrepair. It has become a hindrance to my health, and wellbeing. I'm grateful for the housing, please don't think that I'm an ingrate. But I have to advocate for myself and give myself the best I can.

Hi,, Firstly, Thank you for doing videos like this! OK... I am 62 years old, and disabled both physically and mentally. I currently live in an older mobile home that has mice, ants, skunks and mold ..lol Oh and its falling apart. Literally .. like the fridge is slowly going through the floor ..wait, i just realized that if I were to try to list all that's wrong we'd be here quite a while!! Lol I'm not sure of all the different names and stuff for the programs so can't ask for exact info. I am interested in the section 8 thing since some of my problems would really make trying to live in an apartment VERY difficult!! And apartments seem to be the only thing Housing Authority offers around here. I get confused and frustrated very easily so have near breakdowns when I've tried to deal with Housing Authority before. And the fact that I am neither young enough to be preggers , already have kids, or be Hispanic ..means my place on any lists around here would be so low it might as well not even be there!! {I was actually told that by a Housing Authority Person!!} So how can I get the section 8 thing and then how do I find a house?? Oh and did I mention that while I have recovered enough from the Agoraphobia induce by my Panic/Anxiety Disorder to get around the current town I am in, I can not leave the town yet. And so of course where I need to move is another town over! LOL Yeppers that's me you see floating by up that creek!! lol I've grabbed many an oar in my efforts to control this ship { ship?? As far as I know we do not have a program that allows you to do this.The assumption that you could afford to move across the planet by plane or boat would likely prove that you have plenty of money and do not need section 8.I could see this working working in places like Europe or Asia because countries are closer together and it actual make a lot scents.Thanks for the question ..

Hi thanks for all the info. I'm helping my gf apply for through the housing process here in Mesa, Arizona (Maricopa County). She was recently diagnosed SMI (seriously mentally ill). Right now her case manager is trying to set her up for a 12month housing program. I tried explaining to them how that is not enough time and that none of her problems will be solved in that period. You more than meet the qualifications for housing , don't use those birth certificates because it will only complicate the situation and make finding housing longer.The main thing you need to do is answer there questions perfectly and score highly ! New Jersey removed its manual from online after they figured out I was helping everyone get housing lol. I'm a single man 37.. family of 1.. and I'm seeking a Section 8 Voucher or Subsidize Housing in one of those decent fancy apartments that are constantly being developed.. usually, they'll reserve 10-12 apartments for low income families like myself.. I'm also a healthcare worker.. staying in a hotel right now for free for healthcare workers.. but have slept in my car some night..gotta leave June 1st.. I just printed out the manual and I'm combing through it right now. Supposedly the COVID19 CARES ACT is providing extra money for housing as well.. when you said go take the test, what does that mean? Whenever i've gone to Social Services in my county in the past, all they've done is conduct an intake and ask me questions to see if i'm eligible for certain programs.. they usually tell me that my options are limited because i don't have any kids.. technically, i don't but my name is still on the BC and i still have my divorce paperwork that listed joint custody and visiting times.. but as of today.. the judge disestablished paternity through DNA

Skip Social Services and go take the application and test directly with HUD. Social services has no vested interest in you now,so there answers and help will be arbitrary at best , in other words they feel there time is better spent helping family's and they will do everything possible to discourage you and get you out the door.You don't need them and don't believe there ridiculous comments about you don't qualify.

Hi, missed my deadline for renewal of housing voucher. Letter gave 10 days to get verification in.. Letter arrived after 10 days. Wrote twice, they signed for it, but can't get a reply. Shouldn't I have a hearing. They r the housing help office for my area. Called hud, they referred me to them even though I explained that they r the place that won't reply to me. Thanks

You can appeal this , they often mail letters late on purpose.

Also it stated ...Beaufort housing Authority currently has an allocation of 599 vouchers, to include 8 HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (VASH) Vouchers. Sound like they lost your application or couldn't reach you because no housing list on the planet last last 9+ years.Here's the employee manual for COC -HUD .You need to go down there , retake your test and update your information.This manual will help.If your applying for public housing you could be waiting a life time. I've been removed from housing development sites that I applied for and idk why they never reached out to me.... I've been technically homeless since 2012. I'm currently in Arapahoe County, Colorado. I don't think I "qualify" as homeless because I register my taxes, license, everything, even my disability application and welfare through my friend's address. Any tips?

Do you know how many homeless people have mailing addresses ? Almost 99% of them , how else would they apply for programs and receive mail, ss. ssd , food stamps and everything else .Have mailing address even at mansion proves nothing but you can receive mail. Your over thinking this ! If your not on a written lease or make over 55k a year after taxes then you more than qualify.

My father applied to section 8 almost 6 years ago. He is a special needs person right now, when he applied to all my family with him they told him the wailing list is 6 yeas. They just give us applications numbers and told us it will take 6 years and the other applicants said it will take 10 years. When we applied we were big family( 7 people) my father was not disabled person yet. Right now we are only 4 and he use a wheelchair. @@haiderdhumad6819 The size of the family is whats slowing all this down.You should consider splitting up in 2 groups of 3 and 4 and just live down the street from each other .A group of 7 is nearly impossible to get quickly in section 8 .If you able to do this you should have housing within year.I would also consider getting rid of section 8 housing and apply for housing choise vouchers,Its much faster and you can stay together.

To be honest I'm not sure how being a cosigner would help or hurt but If your actually on lease to live there it wont work unless your getting evicted but you can apply for help with rent , utilities , food stamps and a lot more at COC.
