Wolf's law is really badly missunderstood by the martial arts collective. It states that bone will grow in rsponse to stresses. Damage is NOT a form of stress. When you cause microfractures in a bone it will draw in calcium to strengthen itself, and it actually draws that calcium from the surrounding bone tissue, wich is weakened in turn. The best way to develop strong bones is to stress the bones by lifting heavy (compression stress) or kicking a heavy bag (tension stress). Damage is not the same thing as stress. While leg kicks will cause some stress, they mainly cause damage. It mainly developes your pain tolerance, and there are much more effective ways to actually strengthen the bone.

Yeah dude, it really does explain the obvious, but only if you actually read the whole thing 😉. Just like i said it does develop pain tolerance but not bone strength. These are two completely different things. One is related to wolf's law and the other is not.

Impact training is one of the most useful things if done properly and within reason. There is a risk that always comes with impact training that you could, in the extreme, make your fist one almost solid mass of bone, which it's not supposed to be. Joint damage is his high when you are kind of doing those really insane conditioning things. I do think bag work is a safer way to do impact training. And maybe some sand or medicine ball. But once again, everything within reason. I am actually a big fan of medicine ball exercises. We used to do them in basketball. And the main reason is you gotta be able to handle the impact of catching the ball and continuing on until we either pass or shoot. And you're supposed to take the pass close to the chest, so it's a lot of impact training for that.

From what I remember, bone conditioning is very much not a thing. When being kicked the bone does become harder in the direction where you were kicked while becoming thinner in the opposite direction. However If you walk and stand more then you kick, which you probably do, the bone will realign itself due to the downard force of gravity. What really happens is you are killing the nerves in your leg and numbing them making it so you don't feel the pain. I don't think the micro bone fractures even help at all and could make it so the bone breaks easier
@SeyidAr
@SeyidAr Ай бұрын
I think this makes a lot of sense. Muay Thai fighters definitely have denser bones but so do most athletes compared to normal people. Bodybuilders have thicker bones than normal people too. I don't think it makes your muscles "harder" either. I think professional fighters are just really well conditioned to flex their muscles over and over again without fatiguing. When i get body punched 10 times, my abs are so fatigued that i can't flex them any more. Pros can do that for 30 minutes. But i think i can take one hard body punch better than a pro that's 100lbs lighter than me.
@BennetJW
@BennetJW Ай бұрын
Bone conditioning is a 100% thing, because osteoblasts build literally new bone and connective tissue in your microfractured bone, but you are also right with the nerves that they get killed and numbed so they feel less pain.
@Faith-sl1re
@Faith-sl1re Ай бұрын
@@BennetJW When ever i have gone to look up microfractures i have always found it being referred to as pseudo science to, it seems, people not understanding x-rays of bones. From what i understand, microfractures do build more bone, but that extra bone is just denser not stronger. Something can be dense but no strong, meaning it can't bend as much and any moment that would force it to move will break it easier. So that leg you kept conditioning is now denser but it will break easier, but you don't feel the pain since you killed the nerves so people might interpret that as your bones being stronger
@BennetJW
@BennetJW Ай бұрын
@@Faith-sl1re Ah I understand your point now, its like the analogy with a tree vs a grass halm in strong wind. The thing is that a denser bone is stronger because it is made denser with the same material. If you would have a hollow iron block and add more and more iron into it, the fuller it gets also the stronger it gets. But bones are rigid, they have practically zero plasticity which means even a weaker bone would break since the calcium crystals are not able to bend, they would just break so there is practically no disadvantage in a thicker bone. You just need to make sure to let it heal properly and this is the part where many mess up so the bone ends up completly stress fractured.
@TreyYork1
@TreyYork1 Ай бұрын
You are correct in spirit! He is (probably unintentionally) misrepresenting Wolff's law. The evidence relates to bones getting thicker through *compressive* force! I.E. shin bones from sprinters are significantly thicker! Repeated pliometrics, gymnastics, maybe heavy lifts even can thicken bones-- for instance, the skeletons of archers can be determined by archeologists, the distinctive density of the arm bones! If someone has found bending or shearing forces like getting kicked by your dad apply to Wolff's law, then it is a new study and contradicts previous data!
