This is what I was supposed to do. If any young Air Cadets read this, I did 500 flights in gliders, 31 solos and lots of flying in Bulldogs. I got tempted into a career in finance and I'm now 36 & head trader on a stockbroking desk. Money comes and goes, give flying jets a shot or you'll regret it for the rest of your life! Lots of Gliders yes, Bulldog no, Chipmunk yes. Those were the days. I find it amazing that between the ages of 13-19 I took it all for granted. Unfortunately for me (or should it be fortunate) I was diagnosed with high frequency deafness which put a stop to any delusions of grandeur. But I always think back to my days at 1341 sqn ATC. Happy days indeed.

Did low-level nav when I was in training as a U.S. Naval aviator, in TA-4J Skyhawks, circa 1981, over south Texas. Not NEARLY as picturesque. Really enjoyed this video.

@Zach Michaelis South Texas was chosen, I believe, because you can crash an airplane down there without danger of damaging anything valuable. There are landmarks to use as waypoints. One of your challenges is to learn how to recognize them from the air.

I had the honour to fly Hawks as a student on exchange from Canada. I was taught by the best low level fast jet pilots in the world! I remember unconsciously putting my hands in front of the stick when my instructor (a former Buccaneer pilot) was introducing me to low level over the Irish Sea, as he descended to about 30 feet above the water! R.I.P. Flight Lieutenant Simon Burgess. This profession is not without cost.

This was an absolute nostalgia fest! I did similar trips in Folland Gnats when training at Valley in 1976, but in those days we weren't allowed through the Lake District so went up through the Dales before crossing into southern Scotland. All done with paper map and stopwatch and eye-balling height as we had no rad alt. It was the hardest work I ever did, and the most fun. Sigh!

Tim, Sir, Excellent video. Good clean Narration, easy to uinderstand and exactly clear.After my 24 year stint, I did a little Heavy Goods work between Warrington and Cumbernauld. Sometimes I would see one of 4FTS Hawk Trainers and it would give me a lift. Pump the air and yell (quietly) 'Go lads'. Other low level aircraft was always a good sign we were accomplishing something in the RAF, and to this day, I am lifted when a Mil fast jet goes overhead, sadly, not so frequent these days. Good job Tim, my respects to you.

Great informative video. Good camera angles. Narration flow is good (thanks for no music). The flat water height awareness is quite scary and can be seen in the footage. Workload is surprisingly high, it is a bonus to have an aviator sat in the rear seat. Thanks for the effort.

Cool calm and collected voiceover narrating the progress of the flight, what the pilot doing, what he was looking out for and all the time checking fuel levels while making sure they dont fly into some guy on a paraglider. In a book on the service of the North America P-51 Mustang in the Royal Swedish Airforce, swedish designation J-26, there is story told by one of the pilots about the difficulty of judging altitude over smooth surfaces. He describes a low flying exercise mission during a sunny winters day, on which the return leg was flewn low over a large frozen lake, with a smooth sheet of new dry snow on it. As it happened, an acquaintance to the base commander(?) was at the shore of the lake, and saw this Mustang fly by, "real fast and real low". When the pilot had landed and was in debrief, the base commander came in, asking if everything was okey; with the pilot and the plane. The pilot of course asked regarding this "particular interest", and was told that the acquaintance had called, worried that something might have happend. This as the pilot had flown so low, that the propeller blast and wake, had drawn up a plume of snow after the aircraft, that was told to have been a fair bit higher than the top of the fin. The pilot had a little after-the-fact chock, but now knew how difficult it is to judge one's altitude over a snow covered frozen lake.

This brought back some happy memories! I flew in the back seat as part of my FAC course many years ago. After several medium-level sorties, we dropped to 250 for our first low-level run. We had a bird strike on the very first run and went through all of the procedures you spoke of in the video. Although exciting in itself, I felt robbed that I didn't get to fly a few more :-). The main thing I took away from it was just how much information the pilot has to digest, as well as flying the plane safely. I sat nonchalantly in the back with a paper map not needing to do anything except look for the target on the ground that was being described by the other students - it's bloody hard! Now I am one of the paragliders you talk of - though in South Wales mainly. Great video.

The Hawk T2 is the sexiest jet ever made, and she handled like it too - the transition from Taccano to Hawk was so much better than Bulldog to Provost - and the Chipmunk was incredible too. The Sedbergh Tx glider with no canopy though... winched to 1000ft and no chute at age 14 as a cadet; extreme sports? We knew how to play in the 80’s - then came health and safety..... Those annoying bloody drones are far more worrisome than any paraglider - great video!

The hawk is nice, without doubt. I flew back seat in its predecessor, the Folland Gnat as used by the Famous Red Arrows in the sixties and seventies. Bit jelly of your gliding experiance.

as you flew in towards lake Windemere " WOW just WOW ". Reminds me of when I worked in a massive metal shed on my own, near Wareham. 5/6 times a day the shed would start to shake then boom, a Harrier would fly directly over so low I swear I could read the ID numbers on the rockets

IanHimself I’ve gone for an aviation medical test at Heathrow airport in the U.K. so that I could get my class 2 for a PPL, but my colour vision is so poor I even have restrictions on that such as being unable to fly at night. I have considerably bad colour vision, but at least I can still get my PPL.

Thanks for sharing Tim, it's really interesting to get this view and persepective. We have a lot of BHPA Paragliding RAF pilots in our club and its lovely share the different expieriences. We hope to a organise a more formal talk in 2016 between the two to share ideas on flight safety etc. Paragliders who are simply ridge soaring will likely issue a CANP to notify the military. However in the south of the UK when its a thermic day, there are usually many hundreds of paragliders flying VFR in class G at varying altitudes up to whatever cloud base is of the day but crucially can be flying routes of hundreds of kms. Also with modern paragliders they have better into wind glide so can now vary their routes and flying out and returns. Unless there is a flying competition being held where a Notam is issued like the sailplane pilots use the Cross Country Paragliding pilot is just adopting "see and be seen" although most PGing pilots are flying with live trackers.

what a fantastic insight into the world of low level flying and I must say the T2 has one sexy cockpit, very impressed. If I hadn't been born with Fabry disease, flying the Hawk would have been my dream job. Yeah sure there are bigger and faster out there but the Hawk seems to be the MX-5 of jet aircraft. One question, as you descended below 2000ft and gave the call out to warn other traffic of your intentions are you off of comms until you ascend back up past the drop point or are you in contact with local area controllers? keep up the awesome work.

It's a radio call on a common frequency that all aircraft who are at low level just listen to and occasionally report their location on in case any other aircraft are nearby.

I watch radar on flightradar24.com and occasionally the Hawks transponder will pop up on the screen in the Welsh mountain region north of Aberystwyth. Is this because you're turning on the transponder to show up on civilian air traffic control to avoid conflicts when you climb to higher altitudes?

Cliffjumper24 no, it's just because our transponder doesn't always show up on radar at low level because it is blanked by rocks and mountains, we leave it on at low level

Fast Jet Performance I had a feeling it was something like that. In fact, I was surprised to see any RAF transponder signals outside of the Voyagers (which operate as civilian aircraft outside of combat ops). Incidentally, I've flown through the Welsh mountains myself, in a 151sqn Hawk (T1) from Chivenor back in 1991. I was in the back enjoying the experience, but hoping the pilot was as good as I thought he was!

Brilliant. Re: paragliders - 1: we're not just on the into-wind hills. We start there, but we can be *anywhere*, anywhere from ground level up to 6500' or more. www.xcleague.com/xc/flights/2014616.html?vx=09 2: when you get to the north end of Thirlmere at 6:28 you'd be better off looking RIGHT, not left. Clough Head is a massively popular start point for cross country flights. Raven Crag, not so much. 3: don't assume we're all at work on a "school day"! :-) Many of us either don't have jobs, are retired, or have the kind of job where if the weather's good we can (and will!) bunk off.

Having just checked the map it does show Paragliding sites on the east and west of Thirlmere's exit, we probably only check to the left because we are always turning left to the south of Keswick and so the eastern sites should not concern us. It's always on ridge lines on calm wind days when you guys crop up - and we know you are bunking off work really #wewoulddothesame

Symie8 ex-fairy and ex Valley here! It looks a lot more interesting to work on than the "raspberry ripple" with its basic avionic kit. I believe its all civvy ground support staff nowadays. Those were the days, ahhhh.

I'm an Ex Warrant Officer with 418 Aberconwy Sqn Air Cadets(Llandudno), always good to see life from inside the aircraft, gives the cadets a good insight into what you guys do when on sorties, hope to see a few more in the future

Tim, do you train without the moving map display ? When I trained on the Macchi, we did low level nav exercises at 250 ft AGL at 300 KTS, with a paper map and a TOT tolerance of +/- 10 seconds as a student - no colour CDUs with moving maps! Whilst the moving map is a great modern aid, if it fails, do the young fighter pilots of today have the requisite, basic map-reading skills?

We always carry paper maps for this reason but kit failure is rare and, if it does happen, the student just climbs out of low level and comes home as the weapons system will normally be degraded too making his mission unachievable. We don't intentionally turn off the moving map on the T2 as 'reversionary navigation' has been done previously on the Tucano which has no moving map at all and is all stopwatch and map. The Hawk T1 is still paper map and stopwatch through it is no longer used for instructional duties.

Thoroughly enjoyed the video. I worked on Hawk flight dynamics at Hawker Siddeley back in the early 1970's - good to see its still flying. Re paragliders, concur with the previous commentator. In the UK most XC happens in thermal activity, so is probably well above you when low flying, except when ridge lines are used in the mountains. You're also not likely to see us above cloudbase. But most XC, particularly down south, is in the few thousand feet below and between thermal clouds, so watch out when flying VFR in that zone. Back in the late 1970's, my colleague, Doug Thorby who was the senior Loads Aerodynamicist at the time, showed me a flight path recording of a Hawk avoiding a glider - it pulled up from 1g to 8g in about 0.4 seconds - he was teasing me and said "I bet you can't do that with an active control system". Well actually you can, but not with the kind fitted to the current generation of fighters. Anyway, it gives me some comfort that if you see us, from the Hawk, you can miss us. We can hear you before we see you, but can't remotely pull clear of your flight path that fast.

This is super information. I am debugging my copy of a Hawk for X-Plane 11. The wing was all wrong, and CG. Now I am fine tuning and some of the information here is excellent. Many thanks.
