Low Mile 1996 Impala SS Review & Testdrive

On the lot now is this low mile 1996 Impala SS, and Coyote Classics is pleased to present it to you for your consideration. This thing cruises like no other, and with a factory-installed Corvette LT1 engine this thing will also make some noise while it does so. In addition, this Impala SS comes with lots of modern amenities in addition to having that old-school rear-wheel drive, body-on-frame excitement. Produced from 1994 to 1996, the Impala SS was, in essence, a high-performance version of the Caprice 9C1 police package. As such, it got lots of the equipment usually available only to police and government agencies. This included a sport-tuned suspension with reinforced shocks and springs, a high-capacity reverse-flow cooling system (from the Corvette's LT1), four-wheel disc brakes, transmission cooler, dual exhaust, and other minor alterations. Powered from the factory by a Corvette-derived LT1 fuel-injected 350 C.I. V8, this Impala SS sure does move. Torque from the LT1 gets to the rear end through a 4-speed automatic transmission, delivering nice and linear power. This specific SS has a gorgeous "Cherry-Burgundy" paint job, shining beautifully over a body that is nice and straight. While the Impala SS is a tire-smoking undercover cop, it is a big comfortable sedan at heart. Open one of the doors and there are miles of space inside, which is telling because this is one sports-sedan that will eat up the highway miles without any stress to its driver. Options on this big SS include power seats, windows, 4-wheel disc brakes, locks, mirrors, steering, airbags, a power key-fob, factory A/C that blows cold, cruise control, a tilt-steering wheel, and a mean-sounding dual-exhaust system. The car rides on some unique, SS-specific factory 5-spoke aluminum wheels on top of some Kumho Ecsta tires. With a big naturally aspirated V8 engine, an automatic gearbox, and rear-wheel drive, the recipe for the Impala SS is very simple. However, that recipe works. What you get here is one hell of a sleeper, one that would look wonderful in any driveway it sits in. However, we think it would look especially good in yours.

I loved that Impala. Never seen snow, hardly ever saw rain. Still looks, feels, smells, drives like a 26 year old new car. Drive it anywhere without worries. Hoping to see it move on to another great caretaker!

Chevrolet built it's last Impala in 1985 and from that year forward the car was badged and sold as a Caprice with no available Impala model, the exception was the 1994-1996 Impals SS model. Little to anyone's knowledge the Impala SS is really a Caprice with the Impala SS option package (WX3 = Merchandised package, Impala SS) selected during the ordering process. Caprice's have always been a popular export car to the middle east like Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. During the production years of the 1994-1996 Impala SS, Chevrolet actually exported the Caprice SS (WX8 - Merchandised package, Caprice SS) to these countries. It has been told the reason GM exported the Impala SS badged as the Caprice SS is because the Caprice already had a good reputation in those countries. The Caprice SS was identical to an Impala SS, all the Impala SS emblems that appears on the U.S. model were replaced with Caprice SS emblems. Examples: Rear Quarter Panel Scripts instead of saying Impala SS were replaced with Caprice SS, same for the dash emblem above the radio. The Impala emblems on the rear "C" pillars and trunk remained the same. Colors in the Caprice SS were the same three colors, however I know the U.S. color (DCM) Dark Cherry Metallic was named (BCM) Black Cherry Metallic for the export Caprice SS. The picture shows several Victory Red colored Caprice SS's in use by the Kuwait State Army, I am not sure if GM exported these Caprice SS's in the Victory Red color or if they were repainted in country for the Kuwait State Army.

1 really odd, fun fact about these, is that they're actually a Chevy Caprice with the Impala SS trim option (WX3) it's not an actual Impala model. If it was the Vin would have indicated that. But every vin on these, indicates a Chevy Caprice.

My dad had the green 1996 Impala SS. Kept in garage, only time it saw water was from hand wash and wax. Less than 26,000 miles, single owner car. Sold for $19,900 to the new owner
