“You’re the best mommy!” Noah is so sweet! I have so much respect for you as a mom! I think your channel is so beneficial. I go to KZbin to learn and I’ve learned a lot from your channel! I think you speak about Noah in a way that is respectful and not at all exploitive. Thank you for sharing!

I do too! I learn too, even though I’m an autistic adult! So many parents forget their child’s dignity, consent, and preferences...I recently reported a video a woman took of her son in the shower. Stephanie’s videos are a breath of fresh air for me (plus we have the same name 😉)

I’m high functioning aspergers adult studying at degree level in the medical field. If I don’t disclose this information nobody can pick it. I’m completely self sufficient and I have two children who are in my full time care. This is high functioning! I don’t understand how anyone could look at your boy and think he’s high functioning and think you are “lucky” people are so misinformed about autism You are a beautiful family and your boy is so lucky to have so much support!

"High-functioning autism (HFA) is a term applied to people with autism who are deemed to be cognitively "higher functioning" (with an IQ of 70 or greater) than other people with autism.[1][2] Individuals with HFA or Asperger syndrome may exhibit deficits in areas of communication, emotion recognition and expression, and social interaction.[3] HFA is not a recognized diagnosis in the DSM-5 or the ICD-10." I took it from Wikipedia. As I understand HFA and Aspergers syndrome are not the same thing.

Thankyou you for sharing. My brother lived with our mother all of his life. He is 51 years old low functioning severe autistic. He is non verbal also. I had to take on the role as his care taker when our mother passed away suddenly. It has been a challenge because he does has tandrums and he bites. himself. People have mentioned to me that he may need to go to a group home but I feel that as his baby sister he has. lived at hls home 51 years .....so i moved back to my childhood home to take care of him. Thank you for inspiring me to continue....IT IS A BLESSING .

Functioning is so complicated. And I love you channel more than ever after this post. When my older daughter was first diagnosed they said that she was in the lowest .5% of children on the spectrum and I've had people say the same things to me that you're hearing because I'm all about vaccinating my kids and I've been vocal about helping my kids fulfill they're potential but that I don't believe that doctors can cure who she is neurologically and that I wouldn't change the person who she is and her autism is part of that (and it's such a relief to hear the same sort of things from another autism parent instead of the same anti-vax and let's cure this hype!). Now her results usually say she's "low to moderate" but she's still barely verbal and generally speaks in single word lists, and only then about mermaids so... communication is... limited to say the least. I get so annoyed though when people say that you must not want a cure because you must have a kid with HFA. It's so dismissive. And not true. They just choose to use that rather than engaging in whatever the argument or debate actually is. Anyways, thanks for another great video. I love seeing you and Noah interact. It is respectful and I think that's exactly what the world does need to see when they see videos of families with kids on the spectrum.

Your video was suggested to me and I enjoy now a days watching smaller KZbin channels (also the title caught my eye). You sound like a wonderful mother with a very lovely family. My friends son is experiencing symptoms of autism. He will be 2 years old in three months and they have been having different appts to try to help him catch up (learn new techniques, reach goals, etc). He is such a happy and sweet little boy. He’s the first friend my daughter ever had (they are 1 week apart in age). And him and his parents mean so much to me. I see them (especially the mom) struggle. She knows something is different and she so badly just wants to fix it. She’s only mentioned the word “autism” a few times. I think it can be hard for new parents to accept that their child may be different and especially so when they aren’t familiar with the differences. I hope you know how many people appreciate and are thankful for your hard work in making videos. It must not be easy with a million other things going on. Also, helpful as I’m sure many of your viewers are finding themselves in a similar situation. I subbed not only to support your job but because I am enjoying your videos and also like the information you share on autism. I have truly found with the few people I know that have it, are some truly wonderful and amazing people with hearts of gold.

I don’t understand why you need to explain yourself to these people. It’s ridiculous that someone that would say horrible things about a child. Step into her shoes and take care of her kids and see if you can do it well. There are people killing there kids and your complaining about her that she wants to be a celebrity because she has 22,000 subscribers and talks about her son who else is she suppose to talk about Trump. Seriously get a life

This video has saved me today!!! My son is a lot like Noah! And its so hard to deal with the high functioning vs. low functioning and getting people to understand its a medical term. I love that you give other autism moms a voice and show us all that we are not alone in this crazy journey! Thank you!

I have a 15 yr. Old autistic daughter she can talk bt you cant have a conversation with her she can answer simple questions and understands everything bt has ALOT of trouble communicating and tics like pounding on her sides when she gets excited. She has alot of melt downs bt thier not violent its alot of screaming and saying VERY NAUGHTY words bt I wouldnt change her for the world I feel blessed to have her and wouldnt want her any diffrent someone who doesnt have a child with autism wouldnt understand why we wouldnt want them "normal" as society would put it (shes normal to me though) bt until you have walked in our shoes I feel no one has a right to tell us how we should feel about having a child with autism.

I also love that you are educating all of the viewers on autism because there are a lot of stereotypes out there about the disorder unfortunately and it is all due to lack of education. She's not exploiting Noah. I would bet money, if anything, she's looking for a community of people who understand her situation and can relate. My sister was born with Tourette syndrome, as well as a host of other neurological disorders, and my parents have always had a very difficult time finding people their age who understand. You can't bounce parenting ideas off of people who don't have a disabled child because they simply don't have the capacity to understand the type of parent you have to be. At the end of the day, unless you have a child with disabilities, you really don't understand what it's like and you don't have the ability to. That's not me being mean, it's just the truth.

I have 4 kids all with special needs. Both of my boys have autism. Functioning is so crazy! My 13 yr old has mild autism(with other things) but I can tell you day to day it changes. He is pretty independent but still has some struggles with learning, being rigid with his schedule and having meltdowns. My 7 yr old son has moderate autism (with other things) and some days it is more like he is low functioning but then he will have days where you would think he is higher functioning. My daughter is 15 she has bp but possibly spectrum as well. She is well above her age except for personal care and social functioning. My littlest she is 5 and has adhd and spd. she mostly functions on bouncing off the walls, lol! I think every kid and every family is different. We function at different levels from day to day around here, of course some things are consistent but not everything. you are super sweet with your kiddo and he seems like so much fun. He reminds me of my 7 yr old.

My little guy was diagnosed w mild autism over a month ago and we are currently having early intervention come everyday for a combined 22 hours weekly. He just turned 2 on the 24 of this month and he non verbal. But he is very vocal. He says a few words but never consistently and i don’t feel he understands them. In conclusion I just have been dealing with this very stressful and complicated situation and I’m learning more and more about it. We all have high hopes for my son and his prognosis seems to be great. You bring me so much strength to go through those tough days. It tough and there are so many good days as well but at the end of the day your strength brings me hope and things to look forward too. Thanks girl!!

You seem to have a great perspective, Noah sounds like a great kid! The most recent autism research is making it more and more difficult to label people with a specific "functioning" level. The trend is to focus more on what each individual's specific functional limitations are for determining which kind of support they will need, instead of placing them in broad categories. In fact, the terms "high functioning" and "severe" are not used in the DSM-V, there are actually 2 separate severity indicators ranging 1-3 for communication and behavior, as well as separate mentions for language and intellectual impairments. For example, I didn't have any language delay, which is the main reason I was labelled as "high functioning" (under DSM-IV), but to me it looks like Noah is a lot more outgoing and expressive than I was at that age. I may have had the language in my head, but I didn't know how to use it in a conversation or how to form friendships. I was fairly advanced intellectually, another reason for the "high functioning" label, but I had significant delays with personal care and still struggle with that as an adult. I could write a thesis and still have trouble cooking dinner and brushing my teeth. All that to say, it's just not as simple as saying one person is "higher" functioning than another, we all have different strengths and weaknesses.

Noah seems to always exceed what the doctors say. I would say that coordination issues from my experience is like trying to control things with a loose rope it's much harder. Meltdowns do occur on all levels of the spectrum. Noah's very good at being able to communicate better than most high functioning autistic kids. It doesn't mean he doesn't struggle but I hope he can live the best life he can.

I like to refer more to the style of communication used by the individual in question. Verbal with a bit of jilt or NVC/Non-Verbal Communication used mostly. Just because an individual is Verbal does not mean that it can be hard to get your point across. Take it from someone who knows and has been able to use both NVC (I can use ASL but I am not fully fluent)and Verbal

For me, the labeling of high and low functioning autism is for medical professionals to address needs and therapy. The actual high and lows are for parents to manage and address in day to day basis. It’s true that it’s different everyday.

I speak, am very academically gifted, and have more ability to say what I’m feeling (I have done DBT which is a huge help) to the point that people who aren’t with me wouldn’t know about my autism. I am still significantly disabled in sensory processing and executive function. There definitely seems to be a difference between male/female people on the spectrum. My partner allows me to discuss their autism...unlike me, they really struggle with verbal expression, melt down in a different way than me, and have different/more stereotypical stims. I do live in my own apartment with PCA assistance through my state, but don’t think I could live on my own successfully without support.

I also don't like functioning labels or severities. In my eyes, autism is autism, you can't be more or less autistic. I've been overestimated my entire life, but I cannot live alone, can't express my needs, struggle with executive function a heck of a lot, etc. I would be considered high functioning, but honestly, I don't deal well with being called that. If people say you're high or low functioning, they're looking at how much of an inconvenience you are to them (in my experiences). I tried living in my own apartment with support and my own coordinator, but I couldn't. Now looking at a residential place with 24/7 staff, which is kind of a bummer as I was hoping I could do without it, but I just can't. Academically I did very well until a certain point, then it kinda stayed at that level and I'm struggling to learn more. That seems to be a bit of a pattern in my life; I was very ahead in certain things (behind in a lot of things too, mind you) and was seen as very mature for my age as a kid, but then that stopped and now I'm seen as immature and not at the point I should be for my age. Every time I speak up about my disliking of functioning labels, and give real life examples of why and how they're harmful to me, as well as the autistic people I talk to (which are a whole lot), people just say I'm ableist and neurotypical trying to spread hate. It really brings me down, but you really can't change some people's minds. Autism means that your brain's hard wiring is different, it functions differently than neurotypical brains. That's why if you're autistic, you're autistic. That's it.

I was diagnosed with Aspergers when I was 16, I’m currently 24. I found college a struggle but I also have a mental illness. I have meltdowns occasionally. I’m extremely high functioning as they put it. I also still live at home. Hope you have a good day.

I'm a new Subscriber :) My son will be 3 in May. He starts evaluations for ASD in April. We've unfortunately been waiting since oct. but out local dr has been booked, and the 2nd dr we had left the Office. The closet Autism Center is about 4-5 hours away, which will be our next step if these Drs(not his ped) here thinks he is on the spectrum....anyways I just wanted to mention that you are the reason I also want to have genetic Testing on him done..., which Iintially turned down because I didn't really understand what it all meant. He was born with Bilateral Hydronephrosis and had surgery at 6 weeks. He was about 20-25weeks in utero and, the Dr at the specialist offered genetic testing since its a birth defect. Where we are standing now he is very behind in speech and practically non-verbal with most people. Only 2 people he will really try and say stuff with and that's me and his daycare provider, Still wont call me Mom.,,Mommy etc.. But coming across your channel I am very curious about the genetic part of it. Max is our only child, and I do want more also. thank you for being as open as you are, and letting us in, the things you have to say are very informational and you have no idea how helpufl it truley is. thank you!

I think people tend to determine functionality of others based on their own personal experiences with autism. If their child struggles with speech, a child who does speak is automatically deemed “high functioning”, irrespective of other challenges, which might be quite severe. If a child struggles academically, a person who doesn’t struggle academically is automatically classed “high functioning”, despite the fact that they might be severely impaired in all other domains. In my case, people would deem me “high functioning” based solely on writing this paragraph. But they wouldn’t know I am 35, have never dated, never been in a relationship, cannot work, have never lived alone from my mother, flunked school, and have no friends, have zero eye contact, repetitive behaviors and self injury (hitting, biting) that has sent me to the ER, and need help from a center for the developmentally disabled to function. Diagnostically, all the doctors label me “moderate”, but speech wise, people want to say “high functioning” based on that one trait alone. I think its important to remember there is a whole person and the “severity” of autism is determined by overall need and impairment, not just one or two traits in isolation. Great video.

You have no idea how many times I've had to say the same thing about talking vs communication. I feel like because my son is still really young I don't think people get how low functioning he actually is. At 5 most typical kids aren't the greatest communicators but the differences my son probably won't get much if/any better as he gets older like those typical kids do. I also hate when people say if I socialize him more he will get better at socializing (even had his OT therapist say this) but my son doesn't learn by watching other people. That's a pretty common thing with kids with autism. They don't pay attention to social norms so why would "socializing" him change that? My son does not have the diagnosis of having an intellectual delay or disability on top of autism but I can tell you academically he is a little delayed. His 3 year old brother has definitely passed him in most academic areas. To me the academics are such a small part of the picture. It's those life skills that concern me. Our church has been less than helpful or accepting of my little guy's limitations and it's becoming a huge frustration.

I had croup lots of times when I was a baby. What helps is my parents exposed me to either immediate cold or steam. Just turn on a really hot shower and let it steam if you don’t have access to immediate cold. Anyways, hope I could help!

I’m in the process of getting diagnosed with high functioning autism. They call it a spectrum for a reason. I also work with low functioning autism, it’s interesting how they put on labels. But it’s most likely adaptive functioning.

I think it is obvious that Noah is not high functioning. I mean he isn't the lowest functioning but I can see how challenged he is. That being said, I can see how hard you and he work to be at the level he is. I am sorry people harass you about vaccines. That is not what you need. I am loving your channel. My nephew is also low functioning autistic and I know how hard it is. You do a GREAT JOB!

My toddler who is autistic also started having bronchiol issues at 8 weeks old. Also began to present food allergies even though we had an extremely controlled organic whole food diet. We did not vaccinate because of reactions observed in other family members who are also in the spectrum. Just like all children on the spectrum experience different effects from the condition, vaccines also effect them differently. Family history and parental choice is the best way to go when it comes to vaccines. NO ONE should be judged or forced vaccines, it should be parental choice. I support those who choose to vaccinate and should receive the same support for my choice not vaccinate.

This video answers a lot of my questions about Noah! Noah seems like such a sweet boy and I know you would never exploit him and want you to be a celebrity because of him! I understand that you want him to be self-sufficient so he can live the life he wants to live! You are a sweet mama to Noah just like my mom is to me! I believe Noah will be successful one day being a game developer because that is his special interest! That is what he is good at and I just know he will have a great job when he gets older! Thanks for sharing with us! I wish him good luck in life!

HF and LF are all about IQ. My paediatrician told me that my son has HF autism or Aspergers just because he has no challenging behaviour (“CB”) but she was so wrong! His educational psychologist subsequently did tests on him for several days & concluded that his paediatrician was completely wrong. His IQ is under 70 (meaning he has Intellectual Disability/mental retardation) so he definitely does not have HFA/Aspergers syndrome. Just because you are happy, content, calm and good as gold as a role model in school & at clubs, does not mean you have HFA/Aspergers. Lots of young people with HFA/Aspergers have challenging behaviour which goes to show that aggressive behaviour is not necessarily related to intellect even though aggression can be affected by a lack of intellect at times (since CB is a form of regressive communication for those who cannot communicate).

It doesn’t matter what Noah is able to do or not. What matters is his character. This is the first video I’ve watched from you. I’ve an autistic friend who’s nonverbal, I wish for her she could talk because I know frustrating it is if you cannot communicate. But Autism is just a label, we might function a bit different than neurotypic people, but our blood is still redemption, we’re still human and autism is a part uf us, just like maybe for example our colour of eyes. Acceptance as it is. There’s no cure. And is a cure really necessary? If a cure is necessary, why not brainwash all people and make them all think the same things, like the Bork in Star tpTrek.
