Thank you for your timely explains, it really helps a person like myself to gather some understanding. Could you please, say what valve was it that you press down on (under the throttle body) that caused that loosing air sound? thnx again.

My 04 f150 has a misfire that want away for 500 miles and now it's back! I changed coils around and tried new plugs but found out low compression 75 psi. Wonder if the cam phaser could be bed enough to lower the compression that much?? They say the right bank causes trouble first on these 5.4 triton engines,mine has 215500 miles on it?

It’s very possible, yes. To rule that out I’d do a leak down test on that cylinder if it passes, phasers would be suspect.

do you think my prelude after sitting for about a year and when i last started it i only ran it for about a minute can cause the cylinder walls to get washed out from fuel? it wont start it has spark and fuel and it sounds like its turning over super easy. the motor is rebuilt with around 500 miles on the new rings with original pistons and new rod bearings and all that. brand new timing belt with a manual tensioner. ive heard just dropping a spoonfull of oil down each cylinder then turning it over with the fuel fuse unhooked and no plugs. then trying it can fix that i just dont know if it even has low on compression cause i dont have a compression tester lol. the starting fluid i used trying to start it a few times couldnt of helped if the film of oil on the cylinders is gone lol i hope i didnt mess it up i have alot of time and money into this car lol

How about the opposite? Engine misfire when it gets hot. Mine's a 3 cylinder engine. Cylinder 2 seems like dead. I brought it to a shop near me and was told I need a new engine. I cleaned the sparkplug holes, throttle body and fuel injectors with engine conditioner to clean up built up carbon and I regained some power back but still not running like it should. I don't have access to compression meter and other tools, what can you recommend to look into?

If you don’t have the proper tools like compression gauge etc. to diagnose it, I can’t help you.

Start with the compression first. Should be at least 90psi and up on all cylinders.

Great video! But, I have a question. Mine does kinda the opposite. I have a buick 3.8 and been chasing a cyl 4 miss. Narrowed down, great spark, great fuel, good comp of 150 when starter engaged. But when running, miss returns. After checking everything 3 different times, i was getting stumped. So I checked again. Compression was 150 first try, reset gauge, hit starter again but it actually cranked and started running because i didn't diable system and while it was running I checked gauge and it was dancing between 20-25 psi. Losing compression at higher rpms. Im thinking sticking valve but idk. Put seafoam in gas and mmo in oil trying to loosen it up. Any thoughts? Thanks. I may try a bleed down test next but every time it shows 150 from just the starter turning it. I cant bleed test a running engine. Looking for any ideas.

Sounds like a sticking or slightly bent valve or failing lifter.

@@Motorcarnut it may be a slightly bent valve. The car was parked for about a year-and-a-half. And when I got it cranked initially after that there was a pop that I didn't quite comprehend. Could have been the Piston hitting the valve that might have been rusted or carbon stuck. Thanks for the reply. I'm going to put some miles on it and see if it loosens up with that Marvel Mystery Oil and seafoam. May get lucky if I don't clog my cat first. It has to be a very small Bend because it's sealing during a starter crank compression check. Maybe it'll work free.

@@Motorcarnut my understanding of lifters is either they hold hydraulic pressure or they don't. If they don't they make an awful rattling sound with the valve linkage. I hadn't really thought about a lifter sticking but I guess that could be the case as well. The top-end is not making any noise. But I'll try to keep an open mind.

@headpainter1 Yes, but if one was clogged it can temporarily hold the valve open too long and cause that miss.

my car starts fine and after running about 1 to 2kms misfire comes up.and After driving a few more miles misfire seems to go away. Please help

That sounds like can be a spark plug or ignition coil if it’s just one cylinder misfiring if more than 1 can be vacuum leak somewhere

engine is diesel. So can it be injectors or head gasket issue? my mechanic assume that it is the injectors

If they saw your vehicle go with they say, injectors can cause misfiring but not in all cylinders at once

I'm having the same issue the mechanic did a cold compression test on my ford ztec 2.0l motor and was getting 35psi before i took it too him on cold starts it wouldn't start after a couple of cranks but when it finally start up it misfires till it gets warm. Plugs, wires, fuel pump, fuel filter been replaced. He put a timing belt kit on i still have the cold start misfire i'm wondering if the injectors clogged are bad.

Low compression when cold wouldn't be related to a bad fuel injector. You may have a lot of carbon build up that for some reason is not letting the valves close all the way or bad piston rings, but that 's a long shot. Is it in only one cylinder?

@@Motorcarnut He tested only cylinder 1 when i was there cause i had too go but he couldn't get it too run correctly before and after the timing kit was installed so $500 i had to push my car home mad. Then i started it up myself and it was misfiring bad so i let it run for a min or 2 then it smooth out like nothing was wrong and when i cranked it this morning it started right up no problems.

Could be carbon buildup that was not interfering with the valves this morning and it started up. Hopefully that’s it.

@@Motorcarnut It's 45° today and i started it and it was misfiring for a minute then it smooth on out I'm getting frustrated about now changed everything that got too do with gas except injectors.
