Low Tide Foraging: Catch and EAT RAW Horseneck and Washington Clams

Had one of the most rewarding trips out with Taku and his girlfriend. We went clamming, and caught some nice Horseneck and Washington clams, as well as some cockles and softshell clams. We then foraged for some seaweed and Taku prepared TWO different amazing clam sashimi dishes for us. We then finished off with cooked clams over bread. This has got to be one of the best tasting catch and eat/cooks I've done.
Taku has a channel (Outdoor Chef Life) - CHECK IT OUT: / @outdoorcheflife
Follow me on Instagram @realdoutdoors
Music:
Dyalla - Happy
AK - Euphoria
Sappheiros - Aurora
WARNING: Eating shellfish can cause poisoning if there are algal blooms or if they are contaminated with bacteria. These events are common during hot seasons such as the summer. Make sure to call the biotoxin info line number (800-553-4133) if you have any questions.

Taku, I have gone clamming my whole life and have an interest in food and taken cooking classes. Everything looked beautiful except why would you not scrub those clams in water before introducing all that sand inside of them with the knife when cutting them open? The inside meat got sandy so you have to rinse it, losing all of the beautiful briny natural clam juice. The ones that had smashed shells it is understandable to rinse the meat but for the intact ones it was not necessary! Still love you though.

YUM!!!!! It appears like those clams prepared by Taku would cost AT LEAST $25 per plate here in our part of the Mid West!!!! The last dish says it all....you don't have to go to the fanciest restaurant to enjoy.....just catch them yourself and eat and enjoy with the beauty of nature!!!!!! Awesome video!!!!

The clams shouldn't have been crunchy ...I believe if you put them into a bucket of fresh saltwater for an hour or so, they will expell the sand and grit inside them...for alot cleaner meat.

They mean crunchy in the way cartilage is crunchy. The clam was already cut open and rinsed, so it wasn’t sand that they were talking about.
@rolandfero9742
@rolandfero9742 3 жыл бұрын
@@chau_time well, clams dont have cartlidge. You can see the sand and grit on them as Taku was cleaning them. Trust me, put clams and mussels in a bucket of clean salt water for at least 2 hrs before eating....less grity taste. Longer if you can, and change the water...they expell the sand and is much better. That's what I do.
@chau_time
@chau_time 3 жыл бұрын
@@rolandfero9742 I have eaten raw clams prepared correctly and they are crunchy. Similar to tendon. It’s funny to me that you think a professional sushi chef like Taku wouldn’t know how to clean raw clams.

if you want big ones, head over to Lawson landing and bring a inflatable boat.. its very cheap to get one. no need to worry about getting stuck. i walked barefoot on the mud flats.. like walking on the beach. i've seen people walking to the mud flats but you better know exactly where the shallow path are which are only accessible during super low minus tides.

Have to be careful trying to cross over there. There were many, who lost their lives thinking they can swing over and looks like a short distance. The problem is the water is cold and the current is strong. People never made it to the other side, cramped up and drowned. Stay safe and use common sense out there. Also, did i mention there are sharks in there too? Not sure if any reported of attacks, but nice size ones are lurking beneath.

Make sure to check the regulations in your local area. For example, PSP levels are shown to be high in Half Moon Bay, CA, but not in Bodega Bay, CA (for clams). Mussels are still on advisory in most places I believe, although I haven't checked too recently.
