Long live the Low-Buck Garage! Great episode. Reminds me of my father-in-law’s approach to life. As as boy taking care of the farm in Alberta while his dad was overseas in WW2 then away working oil rigs afterwards he has often told me if you couldn’t build it or fix it cheap...you were going hungry cuz there was no money to buy anything.

Thanks, glad you like it! I grew up in a similar way; new parts were very rare. If you wanted to build something you dug through the junk pile and made it. I had a lot of sketchy lawn tractor based go-karts when I was a kid!

Vapor lock :. Run a return line using an in line gas filter. Turn the filter so the spout on the outside is a little higher than the center spout that goes to the carb. Try to mount it high . I ran it back to the gas tank using the old vent line that came off the canister. Good luck.

*- James, a consideration for another time...in my youth I was taught to turn a single lug bolt on a truck tire hub to the top so it could hang a heavy tire being tipped onto it...that stopped any struggling that caused backs or knees getting wrenched.* *- If you have the time, invert your new spare tire mount 180 degrees, so when you put back a flat tire it will easily catch onto the single lug at the top, and then tip down to land on the two bottom lugs...and you will not wrench your back when you are tired way out in the desert.*

I enjoy your videos and your humour so much, that I am slowly going back to you older videos. Back in 1959, I had a 39 Ford coupe that had a continuing problem with vapour locks in the summer. my solution was, to rap a rag around the fuel pump, and wet it down with water. It was a good temporary/permanent solution to an annoying problem.

Brought back memories of my old CJ-5. I replaced the spring bushings on mine, among other things. One time, it started blowing the horn in the middle of the night. Water in the brass cup under the horn button had caused corrosion to the point it conducted enough current to energize the horn relay (needed to replace the canvas top on the Jeep)..... Cleaned her up and she was good to go!

Interesting content, cool Jeeps. Your presentation is very good. I've got a couple of Jeeps; one is a 1958 CJ5. I like your tire carrier. I've see several similar builds using the tailgate as a brace. My question is regarding the solid mount to the rear bumper. MY CJ5 body flexes with respect to the frame. Are you experiencing any issues with the solid mount? Thanks again for all your work, and for sharing.
@LowBuckGarage3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I appreciate that! These early Jeeps have the body bolted straight to the frame in the back behind the rear tire, so that's not an issue with the flat fender ones. It actually feels better now with the sides tied into the tailgate, before the rear fenders would flex in and out a bit. Its less creaky now, too!
@BarryJoeBailey3 жыл бұрын
@@LowBuckGarage Thanks for the reply. My 1958 CJ5 has 3/4 inch body spacers, so there's some flex. I have bolted my tailgate to the body and I totally agree that it helped to stiffen everything. Thanks again!

You sure do seem to know mechanics . Just like to see you fix that J series truck so it is like it was when new. Not go so far as to know where a spot of paint was put on some parts on check in the plant just make it other wise look like it did when new. My first auto. was a Jeep J10 Honcho. Sadly it had a terrible lift put on it and it was unsafe and loved to drink gas. I did sell it to a school teacher who had me drive it to his place. He had one of the few round barns built . I drove right in and found the man had very collectable auto's of all sorts. After the deal was done he told me mine was one of a very small number with a special paint job from the factory so it said Tonka on the side . I thought that was just a sticker somebody had put on it after but he knew different. Anyway he told me he was going remove the stupid lift and get it to be safe for the road and then use it mostly on his farm .

Can you get a non metallic spacer for the carb to reduce vapor lock? Or double gasket? Not always a fix but I have done it with success in the past.
@LowBuckGarage3 жыл бұрын
I think I'm going to have to do some experimenting with different solutions as, I'm not sure where the problem is. I'm suspicious that its happening near the fuel pump, that's near the exhaust and is probably the hottest part of the fuel system. If it is the carb that's getting hot, I'll try your ideas, too.

You mention the OE spare tire carrier belongs on the passenger side of the CJ3B. I see it is on the drivers side of your CJ2A as it is on ours. I was told that was rare and a "special order". Is that your understanding?
@LowBuckGarage Жыл бұрын
My red 2A didn't have one at all originally, so I put it on the driver's side. I've got another 2A that has holes drilled for mounts on both sides, but the driver's one looks like an add on. Normally the metal pockets for the top bows are on the driver's side, so my guess is that people added them to that side themselves. I don't know for sure, it could even be that some dealers added them there. I would check on the passenger side on yours and see if there are holes there that were covered up.
@ArthurRowley-zj2db Жыл бұрын
@@LowBuckGarage This is a later 1948 2A that my wife learned to drive with 50 years ago that her father bought from an apple orchard in WI. I see no signs of holes on the passenger side and the pockets for the bows are spot welded on the passenger side.

What do you do for the death wobble in a Jeep?
@LowBuckGarage2 жыл бұрын
Its usually something loose, tie rod end, ball joint, suspension bushing. Often it isn't obvious, so you end up replacing pretty much everything that moves. A big steering stabilizer can cover it up sometimes.

Get a rack and pinion from a race shop or bone yard make your own steering it will be 10000 times better.

Hi again , just wondering , why does it vapor lock ?
@LowBuckGarage3 жыл бұрын
It happens when I run the motor at high load but low traveling speed, like digging through sand or climbing steep hills. Somewhere in the fuel system its getting hot enough to boil the gas, and that vapor keeps the fuel from flowing. I'm suspicious of the fuel pump, which is near the exhaust. I didn't catch it on camera, but there were bubbles coming up into the fuel filter right after it happened, so it looks like the problem is before the carb.

I'm curious where you keep finding those old Jeep CJs for such reasonable prices? because those old Jeeps have become extremely valuable. ,and most people want gold standard prices for one's that are in terrible condition. and because you have had so much involvement with Jeeps. I'm curious if you have had any dealings with Ford Jeeps. because Ford made a large number of them during WWII. because Willys Overland was a small manufacturer. and couldn't meet the demand that the military wanted. I guess one sure fire way to tell if a person has a Ford Jeep. was that Ford Jeeps didn't have a tailgate. oh yeah I wanted to mention something that I've seen people do to stop vapor locking. and it works on metal fuel line and on fuel hose. is to clip clothes pins on to the fuel line about two to three inches apart. from the fuel pump to the carburetor, I guess they help dissipate heat. it would be worth a try and if you don't see results. you can take them back off because you already have a backup plan that works. I tend to try to put a lot of redundancy in to repairs and builds. but I found like you that if I over think things. I spend too much time working on things and not enough time enjoying them. anyway keep up the good work.
