I've wondered about this very thing since the early days of atvs when they were going from 3 wheels to 4... back when atvs had very little actual suspension, they relied on the low inflation tires to be your suspension... I'm checking FB marketplace now to find atv tires for my wife's Prius. I'll let you know how it goes 😅😅

This year, I bought a 2003 Kodiak 450 ATV with the intention of using it as a snow plow. Because we get heavy, wet, snow when it does snow on the West Coast, I was uncertain whether the ATV would be a practical solution for me. We had our first snow fall last week, and the traction I had with the little beast, removed all doubt as to its practicability. The little machine moved snow like jack the bear. I have the V pattern tires, with the center of the V open, and I didn't even have to lock the diffs once to make a full, straight, push of wet snow. The machine is great, but I think the secret was the tires. Call me impressed, and far better than me sliding down the driveway sidways in the Bobcat. Great video and fun topic. Four different rims, no problem. Six thousand leaks, we can handle it.
@machinist58282 жыл бұрын
The biggest difference between the two sets of tires is the ATV tires have aggressive siping (cleats) on the edges. Ride comfort is generally not an issue so the sidewalks are stiffer and can be "driven" on just as much as the face tread. If you want to see tires driven on on the sides watch some of the rock crawling competitions. Cheers Terry

with two implement wheels... you can use the holes to fab up an Ausie winch on each wheel. that would be a cool addition. Put them on the rear? rope guides up front on bumper

IMHO go with a rope on both sides of axle. Sure only one will be powered....... but other wheel still turns as it rolls .... thinking it will help spread the force of pull to both axle spring mounts instead of just one??? Might need a spreader bar (slide outs on corners of the bumpers made of reciever tube?? ??? or something to guide rope inline with chassis for portion of the forces and keep it off wheels, while at same time keeping rope aligned with what it is wrapping on. ??

Tire width also effects flexing the sidewall. The narrower OE tires need to flex more than the wide atv tires, because the flex is caused by contact patch psi. The wider tire is wider, but the narrower tire must get longer.

GrindHard Plumbing Co. put a set on a BMW ute they built & drove it from Idaho to Oregon for the Gambler 500. Worked well for them, they did mention that the tires on pavement had a lot of squirm. Flex: The 15" RZR tires have a taller sidewall and will show less flex than the 16" tires. FWIW: I run 10 psi on road in my '3A (31x10.50R15 Dunlop M/T) and 6 psi offroad. I'd suggest 5-6 psi front & 3-4 psi rear for offroad on the lightweight '2A for comfort and traction w/RZR tires. My $.02---YMMV

The way all the holes line up on that one tire looks like it might have had studs installed and pulled out later. If all you want to do is drive off road the newer used tires you found would probably work great and you could still make slow trips on road to get home. My first car was a 42 Ford GPW Jeep and it had 15 inch snow tires on it that worked great. I really wanted the stock 16 inch military rims and found 4 original ww2 Jeep rims with ok tires cheap at a Jeep only shop I found. They actually sucked all around compared to the wider snow tires and drove worse so I swapped back. The guy that eventually bought it when I wanted to upgrade to a power wagon got a lot of spare parts... It did look like a stock ww2 Jeep with the original rims though which was cool.

I almost wasted money on a Horrible Fate tire changer for my many pieces of small engine equipment but found large C-clamps and soapy water in a spray bottle to work great. For car tires I mounted a hinged piece of square tubing from the dump to the wall with a shovel cut down mounted on a pin I can move on the tubing. I hate spending money if my brain can prevent it. Besides, I have no money but I have no bills other than phone and liquid go juice.

The side by side segment kind of confirms why i don't bother with "atv tires". Always considered them to be toy look-alikes and put proper offroad tires on ATVs. It also explains why they last longer too. It's almost like they're tailor made for people to fall into the trap and pay extra for nothing.

What made four wheeler tires so nice was their small wheels and thin side walls for that squishy, flexibility. Side by sides are basically plastic jeeps and they have to make the tires like truck tires with thick side walls to support them. I don't think you're achieving the effect you're after.

Seems to me, when I was a kid. You could go off roading anywhere that had a "Trail system". Now it seems their are very few OHV (Off highway Vehcile) trails around. Like they want us to stop driving cars and only mountain bike or oppress horses on trails that are off road. either way hurts my heart a little to know my grand kids one day won't be able to enjoy the things I did.
@Iowa5992 жыл бұрын
The best way to deal with the pre-existing repairs, when reusing tires, is to slather them with "inner liner sealer", or something similar. If you had painted the inside of those you wouldn't have needed any plugs. Air the tire up before it drys, so it's like ghetto run-flat.

I myself was not all that impressed with these tires overall. Maybe your Jeep was not heavy enough to get the tires to flex enough to conform to the rocks and terrain to present the best grip and flotation. And you demonstrated why some form of limited slip or locker is a desired feature for off road vehicles.
