I need to move an old John Deere 350B crawler dozer. It should just start right up, shouldn't it?

My son and I just rebuilt our JD 350B crawler loader. It was a big job. Even with my Case 580 backhoe lifting the heavy parts, it was a big job. I think parts for a clutch/brake redo would be about $800 a side today. Any of you guys going to rebuild the rear ends on one of these loaders or dozers, pull the plugs from under each clutch and let out the water or oil, these are dry clutches ( the 450s are wet clutches I think). Then pull the clutch covers off under the seat and wash the clutches down well with brake cleaner, 5 cans per side. Then blow them out well with compressed air and let them dry. If you have any chance of getting it to steer, try it now. The shaft seals are known to leak oil into the clutch area and contaminate the brake and clutch material. If this doesn't help, it's time for a rebuild. Our loader steers like it is new and is very responsive and the brakes stop on a dime too. We are fitting a 4-way bucket to it and I am rewiring it with a bunch of LED lights. It won't be long and my son will be digging on his new land.🤩

I have a 350C. It runs like a top now. Had to get the injection pump rebuilt. In the middle of a new idler, adjuster, and track chain. Big jod for a carpenter.

Dad’s uncle had an old 350-A. It was a gas jobber and didn’t have an enclosed cab or power tilt or angle. You could pull pins and angle the blade. The little dozen did have a very powerful winch on the back of it. We used it a few winters to haul out very big maple trees, all that were over four foot diameter.

I'm subscribed to several car channels, which I won't name. But they're your given hot rod, classic, revival, will-it-runs, the Big Three kinda thing. After awhile, I wanted something different. Found LBG a coupla days ago. Now this is different. Military surplus, tractors, obsure engines, and alot of weird stuff. Oshkosh, Rand, Kenworth busses, old Briggs & Strats, Wisconsins, Cushmans, COE's, etc, etc.. Stuff underrrated and forgotten about, not your typical gearhead topics.

I am no expert concerning anything. With that disclaimer out of the way, I have a 1980, so I am told, 350C with a loader. I bought replacement rails and grousers as the original rails were stretched and grousers were worn flat. It's a pretty reliable machine for the most part. Mine has a tank leak from the diesel tank. I intend to do the steering clutches when the tracks are off. Let me know what you find as sources for the clutch parts. The actual foot clutch linkage is sticking on mine, so I generally just use the reverser. Stout machine for the size for sure. Mine weighs around 12,000 and only has ROPS. I will be looking for your future productions on this gem. I forgot, mine has 2 batteries and an isolation switch to disconnect the batteries.

My uncle had one around the same year model but was a 450 with a regular rops. I needed to use it and It had been sitting for 7-8 yrs because it shut off. They thought they ran it out of diesel. I figured out it was the injection pump solenoid and got a good used one for $60 and it cranked pretty quick and ran really good! But I spent a crapload of money on hydraulic lines. But I cleaned up a few acres of my land and drove it back via power line cut about 1 mile. His son used it and trying to push mountains in high range they tore something up in the rear end so bad that it busted the housing. Sold it for couple hundred dollars!

I miss those days of take it apart wiggle all the crap around inside and put it back together and presto it works! So many things of yesteryear just get stuck and need some love to work again. I had a dozer that sat for years and the steering clutched froze up on it, soaked them in diesel waited a week drove the machine out to a huge stump blocked the steering back and started it to digging about an hour one popped loose and in another 30 minutes the other one broke the rust holding the disks to the plates.. Don't know the history with this one so maybe some of the linkage broke? Anyway I love the channel and the way you go about things thanks for the time it takes to think up, video, edit and UL these for me to enjoy!
@LowBuckGarage
@LowBuckGarage 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I think you're right about the linkage. For a few years the clutches would release, and then got slowly worse. They might be frozen now, but that wasn't the original cause of the problem.

a little tip for others who are beginners messing with diesel or just old age. Lol. with those old-school rotary-style injection pumps usually Roosa-master, Stanadyne, or Bosch. MAKE sure when you take the top lid off to access the fuel shut-off solenoid that you reinstall it how it was, Otherwise when you try to start the machine up again it'll go to "full" fuel and run away, and yes it should "click" every time.. what i do is usually unhook that Fuel solenoid wire and crank the eng over with the injectors cracked so it bleeds the AIR from the pump/lines to the injectors without starting. nice cute machine. Love the oddball cab. Will you do a start up on that green tilt-cab trck?
@LowBuckGarage
@LowBuckGarage 2 жыл бұрын
Good point, luckily on this one there's three screws, so it couldn't bolt on wrong. I did keep a floor mat to put over the intake handy in case it did try to run away. And yes, I'll try to start that tilt cab, but it will be in a while. I ran out of time to get to that one on this trip.

Just came across this vid. We used to slack tow tracked vehicles regularly. The way to do it is to use 2 chains/cables of equal length and cross them over, left of tow vehicle to right of vehicle being towed and right of tow vehicle to left of vehicle being towed. Due to blade, in this case might be better to tow in reverse.

I did steering clutches on a old 350 they were the dry type ( you can update them to wet) after I jacked it up and got the track off tore it apart looked like water got into it and everything rusted so went for parts the parts man said I should convert it to wet, but the owner said he just wanted me to do the side that was broke. Long story short put it back together then got one of them government job 6 months later I went to visit my old boss and you’ll never guess what was back in the shop… yep that old 350 jacked up and the other side was tore apart.

I bought a 350 B and one side wasn't working . Once I got it home took the inspection plates off the top of the differential and found the right side the clutch linkage was out of adjustment put it back to factory specs and working great .
@LowBuckGarage
@LowBuckGarage 2 жыл бұрын
That usually works, but my Dad tried it years ago when the problem first showed up, and adjusted them all the way. It worked for a while, then had steering only on one side, then none. Doing some internet digging, I found that a number of people with early model 350Bs have found that the bellcrank that moves the throwout bearing for the steering clutch fails inside the box. I guess that's why the 350C's have a completely different steering setup!

My 1975 John Deere 350C has a special attachment on the dash for a can of ether to attach. On the back side there is a thin straw like hose going to the intake manifold. ( don’t use it because it’s way down the list of things to fix) I only used ether when I first started getting it running after it setting for over 20 years. It starts fine now without.😊 Is ether really hard on things? I appreciate all the videos on you tube on dozer restorations. They have been very helpful.

The steering stopped working way back when it was being used regularly, first one side then the other. I think something bent or broke in the linkages, rather than the clutches freezing up. Apparently the 350B's were known for this, which is why the 350C's went to a full hydraulic steering system.
