Low Carb Down Under

4 жыл бұрын

Dr. Gary Fettke is an Orthopaedic Surgeon practising in Launceston, Australia. Along with his wife Belinda, Gary opened the 'Nutrition for Life - Diabetes and Health Research Centre' based in Launceston which provides nutritional care around Tasmania and Australia.
Gary has a longstanding interest in the preventative aspects of health outcomes, particularly before operating on his patients. Recently an AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) investigation into Gary’s qualifications to give nutritional advice has concluded. This investigation (which lasted for more than two years) has resulted in Gary being issued a ‘caution’.
The Medical Board of Tasmania, under the umbrella of the Australian Health Practitioners Regulatory Authority, have advised him; ”In particular, that he does not provide specific advice or recommendations on the subject of nutrition and how it relates to the management of diabetes or the treatment and/or prevention of cancer.” Gary was later cleared of all charges and issued a formal apology from AHPRA.

I am 72 years old and 6 months ago was told that I am diabetic. My cholesterol, triglycerides and blood pressure were all very high. I decided that there was no way I was going to live my life out as a diabetic. I use to eat a ton of sweets, processed foods, fast foods, bread, etc., but gave them all up. Now I eat lots and a variety of low-carb vegetables, along with plenty of salads. I eat chicken, old cheddar cheese (in moderation), olives, tuna, salmon., pure apple cider vinegar, and extra virgin oil. I drink pure green tea, pure cocoa and use Stevia once in a while as a sugar substitute. I have walnuts and almonds in moderation. I use a fair bit of garlic, cinnamon, and ginger every day. I eat blueberries and strawberries, also in moderation. Eggs and peanut butter are great too but don't overdo it. I do intermittent fasting 2 or 3 times a week and a 24 hour fast twice a month. I walk around the block 5 times a day. So, after 6 months of doing this, I went back to my doctor. He was shocked at my bloodwork results. Everything was completely normal and I reversed my diabetes. I also lost 40 pounds. He looked at me and said, "What on earth did you do'? Diabetes is mostly a dietary disease that requires a dietary solution. I hope this helps someone!

Chuck McPhail I wish more people had a desire to change as you have. The majority of elderly people have an “I’m too old to change” mindset. Even people younger than you are resistive to change and would rather pop a pill. So incredibly sad. They’re more willing to die on meds than LIVE on a healthy diet.

Sounds familiar, diabetic at 61, listened to my continuous blood sugar monitor, off meds in 6 weeks. No longer diabetic under any criteria. Gout went away with the sugar. Did much of it before finding all this info that backs up what I was doing.

Chuck McPhail, thanks for sharing your story. It is very inspiring. If I may add a few bits that I know are beneficial too. Eggs are fine to eat & very nutritious as long as they are from pasture raised birds & off course if you don't have sensitivity to them. Are you making any bone broths from pasture raised meats? Cheap cuts of meat are also very nutritious(heart, kindeys, liver) & always should only be eaten if from pasture raised animals. draxe.com/nutrition/offal/ Are you taking some organic seaweed for iodine too, and Brasil nuts for selenium? Pasture raised(unpasturised) butter is good source of K2 and fermented veg has some K2 too and is good for gut in general. Soaked & ground pumpkin seeds are also good source of zinc as are oysters & meat. I presume that fish you eat is wild. Sardines are great too. Keep up good work & well done.

Very low carb for last 12 months. Lost 60 pounds and my depression is virtually gone. Acid reflux, bowel issues, bloating all gone. Five year excema rash gone. Skin tags gone. Arthritis much improved. Anger issues mostly gone. Daytime fatigue gone. My doctor said I absolutely need to eat whole grains. She actually said my triglycerides were high from eating too much fat. I now eat even more fat, but no sugars or grains and my triglycerides have dropped like a stone. She wanted to put me on a statin. I fired her.

Special place in hell for the statins industry. Cholesterol doesn't pass through the blood-brain-barrier, all the cholesterol the brain uses has to be made within itself and not from dietary sources. And then you take a drug which blocks all cholesterol production ...

Went low carb from 2 years ago because overweight BMI, fatty liver, elevated ALS/ALT, elevated blood viscosity and borderline ischemia. Now I lost 11kg weight, 8cm waist, normal BMI, no more fatty liver, normal ALS/ALT, normal blood viscosity and normal electrocardiogram. But my doctor told me I definitely need some statins because of my high LDL and not to worry because statins has no side effect at all. Oh and they lowered LDL threshold from 130 last year to 100 this year.

Stuart I get your point here, you're just off on the age about 25 yrs. It's a proven fact that Americans don't begin acquiring REAL wealth until they're in the 40s. Obviously that's not everyone but it's true on a MASSIVE scale. 401Ks, equity in homes, rentals, other investments, etc. That said, when Social (In)Security kicks in along with access to Medicare, and you've stopped working, THEN, you're useless except for the VERY wealthy. Seniors get great tax breaks, are much more frugal too, meaning less sales tax. With what may be an utterly terrifying shift in policy this January the concept discussed here is only going to get worse. The globalist dogma brings loss of freedom, first and foremost, and as in other socialist run nations we get various local boards/panels that make sure the edicts of the elites, in this case, Washington DC, funnel down to we of the rabble classes. We'll definitely have a price on our 'collective' heads, literally.

It is interesting that I (an N=1 of course) have transformed my health for the better since ditching sugars, grains and starches. My oral health is amazing now, too. I was at my usual 6-monthly check-up with my dentist recently and he said my teeth were 'perfect' and didn't even need scale/polish. This has been the case for more than 3 years of LCHF/keto eating. My dental bill was zero. I am so happy about this side-effect as I hated getting fillings/injections etc. So, weight loss, anxiety loss, aches and pain loss, no doctor visits, no ill-health whatsoever - all these were wonderful side-effects, but the cherry on the cake is perfect teeth.

Vegans cannot eat any animal derived product, or anything that causes animal death or harm... all industrial farming causes mass animal death, so all they can eat is home grown or naturally occurring plants, and that could never provide 2000 kcal per day, therefore there is no such thing as an actual vegan, just fanatical vegetarians, inadvertently promoting the nonsense they have chosen to believe from the seed-oil, sugar and wheat companies. Recoil with embarrassment.

Not so Long ago I was working in “folk tandvården” in Sweden. They had an information education for ALL public dentists because they wanted all dentistry to be evidence based ( scientific) The paper demonstrating this had columns of the different base of the individual treatments. The column saying scientifically proven was empty and it became clear that most practice is based on “expert evaluation” I pointed this out and needless to say I don’t work in public dental health “care” anymore. The name should be “public I don’t care system” I gradually become more and more of a conspiracy theorist on so many issues. Anarchy and decentralisation is highly overdue. Thank you for the info

Christian Bitar Gotta start by creating an object of hate, like carbs, fats, meat eaters, or vegans. Then repeat all the dogma pointed at these groups and finish with a flurry of passion, sometimes going on about how harmful they have been to you for longer than even forever! And then state that now you are in perfect health and at ideal weight with no calorie restriction or sacrifice necessary, eating all you want. But for certain, do not mention the billions of people that have no problem with carbs. And then quietly consider that the only really new food is all the PUFA’s. Maybe take some Ray Peat in, as taking in a chill pill.

Yoso , you kidding, right? The word CARB doesn’t mean one thing like the word MEAT means, lol. Just go to the store and see for yourself were all carbs are located and see were meat and dairy and eggs are. Powerful carbs occupy 85% of store space at least if not 95%. They are everywhere ready to eat! And all processed. All super modern food stuff. Filled with sugars, additives and toxic plant oils. Eggs comes in natural form like the nature intended, raw milk cheese even pasteurized milk cheese made in more or less traditional ways, meat you can eat raw or cook- natural food. What humans ate for eons?.

I can now turn almost any discussion into one on diet, not always a good thing. I give credit to people like the Fetke's, Tim Noaks, Zoe Harkombe and any other shining lights in this firmament for this awakening. Unfortunately there is a downside. I am now aware of the wrongs done to us "for our own good" since covid was engineered and the future wrongs that are being formulated by the WEF led governments through covid and climate activism. I feel quite silly being fooled by the hypnosis ( false education from the cereal industry ) the cereal industry are like drugs pushers because to a large extent sugar and fructose even in fruit is as addictive as most hard drugs. Owh well at least I found the cure and I am no longer in pain. My life is vastly improved. I will have to wait a year or so, maybe 7 years for all my GI tract to fully replace itself and much of the damage to my organs but the relief was instant within a few days so I feel very optimistic. I feel so grateful Gay Fetkee and Tim Noakes stood their ground. against these goliath drugs pushers wo are the cereal industry and even the fruit industry too. I had no ide that carbs are not NEEDED by the human body. I even though fibre was critical but I have stopped eating fibre and my GI tract is so much happier for it. I have also lost my joint pains which normally flare up during winter in the UK as it's December now I would normally be hobbling but I am walking like I am 10 years younger. Quite astonishing.I have thrown out all my seed oils in the bin ( really should be called Deiels engine oils) now I have only natural fat like butter and animal fat and virgin olive oil. I needed the science explained to me in the no-nonsense, matter of fact manner that Gary presents. He just says it as it is with no ego emotions. Spot on ! Thanks. I am now wondering how much other false information we have been hypnotised into thinking is true when its totally false. The problem with me is that I am VERY slim so I never made the connection between bad health and Carbs .So unlike fat people who get to see the obvious damage it does to them , I did not make the connection of carbs to ill health.

I would go back to complete meat fish and eggs with butter cream and milk for four days then begin with a few green veg. to see what happens. No spices, just salt and plenty of it. Gradually adding one item every week after that to see what upsets. Best of luck. Nothing in a packet. Noting that has a lable. Nothing after that that has more than two ingredients. All Natural.

Question: Is *Big Food* and the *Pharmaceutical Industry* well intentioned or have they highjacked the entire show? Funny you should use the word *SHOW,* as I don't perceive any company much less an entire Industry as a monoculture. It's the *MARKETING and FINANCIAL OVERSIGHT who are sociopaths!* _(Sure there's the rare researcher chasing after citations, but that isn't the problem)_ The people who don't actually make anything, aside from commissions, bonuses, stock options, chasing after money. People in charge who demand MORE ALWAYS; People who please those insatiably wanting fools; MORE Money must flow or the minions will be replaced... So many levels of abstraction removing blame for systemic problems, perpetuated by people who say, _"it's not me,"_ when in fact *it is you.* A race to the bottom, with participants what? Sociopaths? Psychopaths? Just too cognitively lazy? Dumb... or more likely, people trying to meet the needs of their families working in corrupt and corrupting institutions, with no where else to go. *A culture of vultures! The Pharmaceutical Industry IS SICK!* Maybe one day we'll all just say *Sachler Syndrome* and share an understanding: *The absurdity of intending to work for the benefit of humanity, then finding a product quite profitable, and working it from every angle to make MORE MORE MORE MONEY, eventually ignoring **_(denying/lieing)_** the misery, suffering and lives destroyed through that profits-first effort.* _...Making what should have been a blessing, then MARKETED/PROMOTED AND _*_OVER PRESCRIBED_*_ into a CURSE._

It seems to me that your statistical argument starting at 6:25 is flawed. Generally: The phrase "within 1 standard deviation" means the range from ( μ - σ ) to ( μ + σ ) The phrase "within 2 standard deviations" means the range from ( μ - 2σ ) to ( μ + 2σ ) If the guidelines are written to encompass 2 standard deviations then they're written to include 95.4% of the population (i.e. they exclude 4.6% of the population, not one third, as you stated). The problem stems from your treatment of the range ( μ - σ ) to ( μ + σ ) as if it's 2 standard deviations. I support the spirit of your presentation, but this kind of mistake damages both your credibility and the larger cause. Of course, if the guidelines _really are written_ to support +/- one standard deviation then your argument is correct.

Gary trying out some investigative journalism, quite a talented guy. Edit post: as good as these presentations are I feel the LCHF community on Low Carb Down Under is quite insular. The vegan community is probably showing a presentation now on how big dairy and big egg is influencing medicine and diets? My point is, it would be good to see some real debate against expert representatives from the opposite camp and have our ideas challenged.

I dont follow guidelines or fancy diets, I follow my own commonsense and it has served me well, but not all people can follow a commonsense diet or lifestyle. Some have lactose intolerace, so they cant drink a pint of milk a day, others have gluten intolerance, so they cant eat wholemeal bread.Others have some physical handicap which prevents them taking frequent, brisk aerobic exercise, so its horses for courses, do what suits you best. Everyone can give up tobacco, or better still, not start. Everyone can keep alcohol consumption to a minimun, say a couple of pints of beer per week or a few glasses of wine. Avoid cola type drinks, and fried foods.Even if they cant run, almost everyone can go for regular 3 mile walks, the brisker the better. Eat plenty fruit and veg.

Interesting, but very biased, too. Vegan can be science, vegan can be LC, vegan cab keto. And science suggests that vegan keto is the most healthy diet. The biais of the present video is obvious: appeal to nature everywhere, eg "what we are supposed to eat". Whe are not "supposed" to be carnivore neither omnivore. Human physiologie is evolving and diet, too. Science based.

If eating fats make us fat as they preach, the meat industry must be feeding cattle FAT to fatten them up for market, right? NOPE. The meat industry feeds cattle and livestock BULK GRAINS (carbs) to fatten them up. That's well known and indisputable. The cattle and livestock industry has ALREADY proved to us that eating bulk carbs produces extreme weight (fat) gain. Simple carbohydrates ARE sugars. The human body metabolizes Complex carbohydrates into Simple carbohydrates (sugars) in as little as four minutes. Effectively, ALL carbohydrates are sugars to the human body. Highly processed carbohydrates produce very high blood sugar levels, causing extreme insulin responses. A non-stop diet of carbs and sugars produces continual high insulin levels in the body, and THAT leads to eventual insulin resistance and all it's symptoms - obesity, diabetes, heart disease, etc etc etc. This is just the science in summary, and is all well backed by recent research. Again, not disputable. Fruit? Whole fruit in moderation and in season is of course healthy. Over doing it on the other hand, would easily push us into an overdose situation. Again, processed food as a commodity is the problem. One glass of apple juice is equivalent to about FOUR apples, and we could all easily drink two or even three glasses. Obviously sitting down and eating twelve apples in one sitting, doing that again in the afternoon, and of course then also for five or seven days a week, WILL equal a huge amount of fructose, which is of course just another simple carbohydrate (sugar). Of course that's a big problem.

eating alot of fruits, all day long, is the mechanism that bears use to build up fat every year before winter, then they hibernate (and fast) for ~3 months and are ready to go again.

You carry on eating your high fructose diet. Fruit only grows on trees a couple of months a year in late summer and autumn to fatten us up for winter. That's what Gary was talking about. But enjoy your sugar.

It's ok to eat some processed food, but clearly that should not be the foundation of your diet. God's food in God's wrapper, daily exercise, and give intermittent fasting a try. These guys strike me as just one more of thousands of diets overs decades and decades.
