G&L L-1000 CLF Revisit: COMING SOON
Hey everyone! Today we're reviewing one of the latest (and one of my favorite) offerings from G&L. This is the G&L L2500 CLF Series 750 A.K.A. "The Big Chonks" from my personal collection. The L2500 is already rocking five strings, two beefy MFD humbuckers, a passive two band tone circuit, and an active preamp w/ treble boost, but the Series 750 takes things a step further with 19mm spacing. Is this the ultimate Fullerton fiver? Let's find out!
This bass and all my other basses with rounds are strung with SIT Foundation Nickel Plated Stainless Steel 45-105(125) unless otherwise noted. Check them out at sitstrings.com/

Parallel mode is for soundchecks, so the engineer can get all the levels balanced and the bass sitting in the mix properly. Series mode is for mid set, when you want to show the crowd who the true star of the band is.

Can make the transition smoother by rolling off some bass just after switching to series then fading it back in gradually between songs 👀.

First, I don't have a G&L anywhere in my arsenal - that may change very soon. Second, I really like how you develop a grove for the demo and stick pretty close to it for the whole video. It doesn't help when someone keeps changing the tone AND the groove at the same time. You can't here the the differences as well - so thank you for that.

Awesome video and what an incredible sounding bass, thanks for the breakdown on this instrument Lobster. I noticed on the 3rd string, the string is sitting on top of the string guide on the headstock. The string being on top of the guide will change your string angle, probably not in any dramatic way but both the 2nd and 3rd strings are meant to be beneath the string guide.

Such a great sounding and looking bass! Monster tones and a finish that just screams "LOOK AT ME!". Minor gripe though: No quick release for the battery? In the year of our dark lord 2022? Now, that's an opportunity for an improvement. Love the Channel 5 shirt btw too.
@richardrosemusic
@richardrosemusic 2 жыл бұрын
I'm probably in the minority here but I can't stand quick release battery compartments. This bass can be played passive so there is zero need for super quick battery changes, and the quick release compartment are flimsy plastic that get caught on shirt material very easily and also dont sit flush to the body so if you lay the bass flat the plastic battery compartment cops a beating over time. I wish they used a metal lid rather than black plastic like on the old Stingrays though.

Awesome review of an awesome bass! Several years ago I owned both an L2500 and a Stingray 5 and I remember doing a recording session in which I brought both basses (and I loved both basses). I found that I liked the L2500 tone in the mix in every setting and for every style including slap, which surprised me. That takes nothing away from the Ray but when one considers the reputation for great tone that bass has it makes a statement about how good the L2500 sounds.

@jaxonvictoria4345
@jaxonvictoria4345 2 жыл бұрын
@@mixc8 I’m a huge fan of the kind of music that Dingwalls are mostly marketed for, but I find the general tone of the NG-3 to be way too harsh, trebly, and just doesn’t play well with my favorite amps (especially a hi-fi one like GK). I had the NG-3 in BEAD but for some reason the B string on my 34” Kiloton 5 is more satisfying to play. The G&L just has a more traditional sound that plays well with most (if not all) amps that I use and I absolutely love the fact that it is essentially a passive Sterling.

Great review! Will definitely be picking up a L-2000 or 2500 one day. Love that orange sunburst looking bass on the wall behind you! Looks similar to a jazz body, and I've been looking for a bass with a more... contoured body like the jazz, but without the traditional single coil pickups. I would die to play something like the one on the wall there - never see that kinda thing in my local music stores.

I own a G&L L-2500 and L-2000, both from the tribute series. No matter what Bass I try, I keep coming back to G&L. These basses carrie some inexplocable mojo I don't find with any other brand. The passive tone- and bass blend are a unique feature, as are the adjustable pole pieces. For anything remotely traditional, these basses are the reference bar.

What a KILLER bass! This thing absolutely rocks. The variety of tones you can get from it is staggering, and most are simply awesome. I'd totally love one but I can't afford any more basses (and I've got 3 atm) ;-) I just wish there was a wider colour choice. This orange isn't half bad but it's just not "me". And that would leave me just with the natural (the remaining 2 have rosewood or pau ferro fingerboards and I simply prefer maple on "fenderoids"). I wish they had my all time favourite black+maple combo available! Oh, and the headstock is infinitely better than the 3+2 monstrosity they've been using since around '97. I'm usually partial to more symmetrical headstocks but what they did on the L-2500, with each tuning machine pointing in a different direction, is a travesty. Anyway - a fantastic instrument. One of the best you've ever show showcased. Love it love it LOVE IT!

Stunning looking bass and the tone is killer. There are hints of P bass and Stingray but also plenty of tones that are unique. The real kicker for me is the weight. In an era when manufacturers like Dingwall, Ernie Ball, Sandberg and Spector can produce full-bodied 5-strings at 8.5-9lbs, 10.5lbs seems very heavy, especially when this particular model is advertised as having a lightweight basswood body. A quick look around the web seems to bear out that this is the typical weight, rather than a one-off. It’s not a problem for everyone but too weighty for me. Given the Tribute models have identical hardware and electronics, if you can put up with the poorer finishing, it’s probably a better bet as the USA models are just as heavy. EDIT - I managed to find a new Fullerton Deluxe L2500 that is 8.9lbs, so light ones do exist!

The easily adjustable pick up poles are rarely/barely mentioned. This is odd as it seems like another of Leo's brilliant innovations. Does this have a single-coil switch too? Then it would be one of the most versatile axes on the market. I am a die-hard fan of Music Man basses and I believe nothing can do the Stingray sound due to the pickup position, therefore, not even this cool bass can be compared to a Stingray. Yet it is a serious contender in terms of look and built quality. It has its own character and sound, and the single-coil would make it super versatile. Another thing is worth mentioning is that these basses have graphite bars in their necks, which is another cool feature. 12" radius, stainless steel frets, and quarter sawn neck options are also available. I dig this headstock and the metal control plate reminds me of some vintage classic Stingrays....S...I want one😵‍💫

Hey Lobster - how do you compare the 2500 vs a stingray?
@ragetoca
@ragetoca Жыл бұрын
The should have kept the same headstock design as the older USA G&L L-2500, the B string had more tension thus a better sounding string

Do you know if there are any major differences between the CLF Research and Fullerton Deluxe lines of L-2500? Or is it just the control plate and finish options?
@LowEndLobster
@LowEndLobster Жыл бұрын
I believe it's the control plate, finish options, headstock, shape, and the 19mm spacing option on the CLF (which this one has)

You did not talk about the neck, its feel, chunkiness (or not) and the string spacing (3/4").

A Fenderish style bass that sounds great until you hit the B string.....big surprise there. G&Ls are great instruments but they don't make great 5 strings imho (Musicman cleans up there)

The L basses come in so hot that I like to think of the EQ as ‘tone taps’ rather than tone cuts. You start with them closed off, and open them up to let loose the tone you want. When you first get one of these basses it can be pretty daunting as tiny variations in your playing can result in large jumps in output. Many players benefit from dropping the pickup height too, at least until you get used to the quirks. I think that Leo genuinely intended for it to be used tamed down and then opened up, rather than starting with everything wide open like his classic Fender basses. If you build a bass with all these controls, they are meant to be used, so the ‘default’ tone is somewhere deeper than wide open.

Leo was pretty deaf at that point, so I wouldn't bet on him intending this bass to start up fully closed with the tone controls. I'm sure that's why he designed the L series as hot as they are. My old L2K used to clip my GK 2001RB preamp lights unless I completely turned down treble and bass controls. In passive mode. That was a huge "what's the point then?" moment for me. It's not as big of an issue for amps that have the control for the input gain, but GK RB amps don't (except for the awful -14 dB pad which makes the amp sound like garbage). Also it never sat in the mix nearly as well as my Precision and Stingray basses. It was just, kind of meh.

This bass is a cannon, didn't hear a bad tone on it. I normally don't like the "full bass/treble cut" tones, but they still maintained plenty of character on this bass. In series mode the attack of each note has a really distinctive "bang" that I guess is the MFD humbucker? I will soon find out because your video made me buy a Kiloton Fretless. Picking it up this week!

The L series is so hot that I believe that it was designed to *start* with the EQ wound off, and to be opened up to find the right tone. Just Leo Fender thinking different again.

Hope anyone still sees this reaction for a 1-year-old video. I am wondering if the action on this bass can be set low. I am not aware of the actual string height preferences of our beloved Lobster and hardly hear anything at all about it in these videos. I heard stories that these basses cannot really be set low. So just wondering, because this parameter is a essential for a buying decision for me and might be for many others. Thanks for any response.

I beg to differ. This is one of very few active / passive basses where the two modes are designed to be more on a continuum and work together. It’s a rare (and highly musical) achievement.

@@artyom108 I agree but removing it entirely subtly changes the tonality. I've owned 4 L series basses and found this to be the case with all of them. I have heard that the current L electronics differ from the classic era though. Perhaps this is no longer the case 🤷‍♂️

It's not even a classic tone shaping active preamp, it's just a buffer (+ a buffer with a treble boost) meant to be used for long cables. Tone controls are passive.

It's way too much for me. I would get lost in all of those settings. I made that mistake customizing one instrument years ago. I prefer to simply find one sound I can work with and then use my pickup selector or amp for any tonal adjustments. I can always hit the Empress Compressor or their Parametric EQ pedal if I want more to play with tonally. Nearly all of my basses are passive and none have crazy eq mods on them. I'd love to try the new MXR two octave octave pedal with fuzz. Sounds like fun! Hey it was interesting to listen to and I hope you enjoy it! Someone needs to figure out how to capture the Gibson new guitar smell. They smell like the bubble gum you used to get with baseball cards. Uncanny.

No, it's a pretty comfortable profile. It's smaller than what you'd expect if you've played the mega chonky 43mm necks on some of the Tribute 4 strings.
Is this the most versatile bass ever made?
