For the amount of weight that Lee Sun Hee brings upward I don't consider C5-D5 'middle belts' for her.
@Amazingvocalsandmedia
@Amazingvocalsandmedia Жыл бұрын
I don’t really take that into account, plus she had a higher voice than the other people in the video. She also rarely goes beyond Eb5 and often does so with great tension (갈등 being an example of her even struggling to hit a D5 almost every time). It’s not that she can’t, but she simply doesn’t so I saw no point in including anything higher or lower because her F4s are basically spoken and still are to this day

@@AmazingvocalsandmediaShe has plenty of great belted Eb5s. I see no reason to harp on her tension. People do this all the time with her like LSH needs a disclaimer when the reality is that she’s one of the better purely pop belters and should be seen as such. Leaving out the musical theater/vaudeville/classically trained folks, she’s got a pretty developed voice and advanced coordination for pop belting, and she has the ability to play with it throughout her range. I would take her “tense” Eb5s from the last decade, many of which have a lot of depth and tons of volume, over much of what modern singing is because it’s more fundamental and more developed. This was definitely the case when I saw her live. She was LOUD. Very, very loud, and it wasn’t because she was screaming in a “tense” chest voice. She’s got a good coordination in her belting range that allows her to get that volume and richness. It’s a consequence of good technique and training, not a symptom of abnormal tension.

@@AnimeMovement i appreciate you defending her, but I don’t think that’s needed. I’ve made several videos about her or including her, most of had notes that were much higher than D/E. she is a very tense singer, but so is Patti Labelle and they are both great. I don’t believe in light singing when it comes to big belty songs. Being tense is not always technical flaw and it’s also not a moral judgement. She is miles more impressive than most current belters because of that tension

@@Amazingvocalsandmedia What I’m saying is that we don’t see this verbiage with anyone else. People throw the word “tense” around with LSH like it’s unique or noticeable or something you have to know about her singing, when it’s not. It all stems from a defunct and preposterous vocal site that spread misinformation for years. Nobody is going out and asking questions about Patti’s tension, and nobody is mentioning it every video that discusses her. In the same vein, we should eliminate that type of talk with LSH because 1) it’s really misleading, 2) it’s just totally unnecessary. We should just focus on the things that are focused on with any other singer, such as depth, volume, openness, etc. Most people will mistakenly think tension = strain/lack of freedom, when that’s not really the case. Again, I know you’re not criticizing her, but the truth is one set of terminology is used to talk about LSH and nobody else, and it’s not necessary, especially if it’s your contention that all pop belting styles are built on tension.

@@AnimeMovement with all due respect, the word tense is being thrown around with quite literally every singer out there, what you’re saying is absolutely false and detached from reality. It is not exclusive to her and I have absolutely no idea where you got that idea from. I also do not appreciate you trying to police what I can and cannot say, I am not responsible for people interpreting the word “tension” as “strain,” and I, unlike many other, am doing everything in my power to provide free education about singing, so I think I’m doing more than enough to combat the potential harm that term could cause. I will not stop using the word tense to describe her singing strategies or sometimes issues, just like I won’t stop using the term tense to describe Patti’s belts, and just like I will keep referring to Ailee as unnecessarily nasal and imbued with valsalva. I also never talk about depth, volume, or openness. These are undefinable terms that are absolutely pointless. They are vowel dependent for the most part and tell you very little about the quality of someone’s technique. Volume is also not a criteria I would use in every context. By the way, these are terms that were significantly popularized and bastardized by the very site you just criticized 🙂 As for “lack of freedom,” there is no “free” singing, all singing requires some level of (scientific) strain and tension, especially when you belt. Now, how much tension is present will depend on sub and supraglottal factors as well as general neck activity. So, I will keep utilizing verbiage that I deem scientifically accurate, but feel free to use KVA vocabulary if that is what makes you happy! Nothing wrong with it

@@mansa_p she’s a pretty tense singer overall, but that’s part of her technique. She brings an insane amount of weight to those notes, hence why you rarely see her belt above Eb5/E5 and when she does (F5-F#5) it kinda shows even more. She mixed an A5 during an interview, showing she *can* achieve greater freedom, so I think it’s safe to assume that it’s a result of an impressive technique rather than lack thereof

@@Amazingvocalsandmedia thank you for the insight. My heart always told me Sun Hee was technically skilled (that and the fact that she has maintained her voice throughout her career ) but I was always confused about the tense-ness . I'm now further enlightened on her abilities.
